This exhibition, which we are proud to present as part of the Spanish Art Abroad programme, offers us a new opportunity to reappraise the work of this artist and to gauge both the variety and productiveness of Spanish culture during this period. Sempere has traditionally been seen as belonging to the optical-kinetic art movement of the mid-fifties, although his work transcends this stylistic and ideological framework with the development of his own personal viewpoint, in which the poetic resonance inherent goes beyond the limits of this first classification. This current collection brings together both the artist’s paintings and his sculptures, providing us with the chance to see important series such as his gouaches on cardboard. The programme of Spanish Art Abroad, that is centred around the work of artists associated with the artistic avant-garde during the second half of the century, finds in Eusebio Sempere the essential protagonist capable of putting Spain at the centre of contemporary trends. Sempere was associated with the artistic groups of the period (“Los Siete” and the Parpalló Group), worked as the cultural correspondent for the Levante newspaper, and took part in important international events such as the XXX Venice Biennale (1960) the VI Sao Paulo Biennale (1961), or exhibitions including The Responsive Eye (1965), MOMA, New York and Spain, Artistic Avant-garde and Social Reality, 1936 - 76, Venice Biennale (1976). The fact that this exhibition is inaugurating the new exhibition hall at the Academia de España in Rome is a source of great satisfaction to us. The Academia de España in Rome, an institution with a long and prestigious tradition, has in recent years given its backing to an extensive modernisation programme. This exhibition by Sempere evidently demonstrates the Academia’s intention to support the promotion of the most recent Spanish culture, thus underlining its key role as the artistic centre of reference outside Spain. I would like to take this moment to express my sincere gratitude to the City Council of Alicante for its generous collaboration with this project. One of the objectives of this programme is that of cooperation with other institutions; the attitude of the City Council of Alicante in lending all the pieces in this exhibition is the best proof to convince us of the altruistic nature of this objective. Finally, I would like to offer my sincere thanks to the efforts of the State Corporation for Spanish Cultural Action Abroad in their collaboration with the Spanish Art Abroad programme, without forgetting all the people without whose help this project would not have been possible. ANA PALACIO Ministra de Asuntos Exteriores Once again, the Spanish Art Abroad programme, an initiative of the Spanish Ministry for Foreign Affairs in association with the State Corporation for Spanish Cultural Action Abroad provides with the opportunity to re-appreciate the life’s work of one of the artists from the

Spanish Painting during Developmentism From 1960 on, Spanish art consolidated the ground it had gained over the previous decade, in which informal- ism had managed to make itself noticed on the international scene through official promotion and awards given to artists like Antonio Saura and Antoni Tàpies. LOST LOOSE AND LOVED FOREIGN ARTISTS IN PARIS 1944-1968 The exhibition Lost, Loose, and Loved: Foreign Artists in Paris, 1944–1968 concludes the year 2018 at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía with a broad investigation of the varied Parisian art scene in the decades after World War II. The exhibition focuses on the complex situation in France, which was striving to recuperate its cultural hegemony and recompose its national identity and influence in the newly emerging postwar geopolitical order of competing blocs. It also places a particular focus on the work of foreign artists who were drawn to the city and contributed to creating a stimulating, productive climate in which intense discussion and multiple proposals prevailed. Cultural production in a diverse, continuously transforming postwar Paris has often been crowded out by the New York art world, owing both to a skillful exercise of American propaganda that had spellbound much of the criticism, market, and institutions, as well as later to the work of canonical art history with its celebration of great names and specific moments. Dismissed as secondary, minor, or derivative, art practices in those years, such as those of the German artist Wols, the Dutch artist Bram van Velde, or the Portuguese artist Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, to name just a few, lacked the single cohesive image that the New York School offered with Abstract Impressionism and its standard bearer, Jackson Pollock. In contrast, in Paris there existed a multitude of artistic languages and positions coexisting

Drawing on the combined legacies of Don Quijote and the traditions of the picaresque novel, these essays focus on the question of invention and experiment, on what constitutes the sin- gular features, formal and cultural, of evolving fictional forms. They examine how the novel articulates the relationships between history and fiction, high and popular culture, art and ideology, and gender and society. Contributors highlight the role played by historical events and cultural contexts in the elab- oration of the Spanish novel, which often takes a self-conscious stance toward literary tradition. Topics covered include the regional novel, women writers, and film and literature. This companionable survey, which includes a chronol- ogy and guides to further reading, conveys a vivid sense of the innovative techniques of the Spanish novel and of the debates surrounding it. © Cambridge University Press www.cambridge.org Cambridge University Press 0521771277 - The Cambridge Companion to the Spanish Novel: From 1600 to the Present Edited by Harriet Turner and Adelaida Lopez De Martinez Frontmatter More information THE CAMBRIDGE COMPANION TO THE SPANISH NOVEL from 1600 to the present EDITED BY

WORLD’S MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART MASTERS It is startling to begin the year 2015 with an international show of such repute with big names in the art world practice such like Picasso, Delacroix, Manet, Matisse, Pollock, Warhol and many more. For the first time, a collection of modern and contemporary prints or graphical works being showcased in a large scale to the Malaysian public. Our efforts in strengthening relationship and networking with international collaborators have become fruitful. MAESTROS was worked on with the purpose not to just expose the Malaysian public to the works of international art masters but also to educate on the relevancy of print artworks in the world's history of art narrative. We have discovered that the knowledge and awareness on print artworks to be regarded at par with paintings and sculptures or other plastic art are still low in Malaysia. It is also an opportunity for the public to learn on the processes as well as technique that go behind print making and realize that it involves a painstaking skill to which it is honored as one of the finest forms of art. Art awareness, appreciation and development of fine art in Malaysia are the key objectives of PETRONAS art involvement as good corporate citizens. Ultimately, PETRONAS hopes to contribute towards a contemporary and inclusive society. Since our inception in 1992, Galeri PETRONAS has worked in partnership with countries like China, Brunei, Italy, France, Finland, Indonesia, India, Germany, Japan, Australia, Beirut plus Pakistan and it is exciting to open our doors for the first time to our Spanish counterpart.
