SAM – SALÓN DE ARTE MODERNO February 26 – March 3 Calle Velázquez, 12. Madrid. SPAIN DOWNLOAD IMAGES: https://bit.ly/2LbErJT Salvador Dali, Projet de costumes paranoiaques pour ballet, 1942 SAM – Salón de Arte Moderno will hold its first edition from Tuesday, February 26 to Sunday, March 3 at calle Velázquez 12 in Madrid, adding to the calendar of must-visit events that will take place during the week of ARCOmadrid. The fair will exhibit works of art by the greats of the avant-garde – Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Marc Chagall, Tamara de Lempicka, Joan Miró – and of modern art – Antoni Tàpies, Antonio Saura, Equipo Crónica, and Eduardo Chillida. It will also feature contemporary artists whose names have already gone down in art history, such as Jaume Plensa, Miquel Barceló, and Rafael Canogar. SAM is the only European art fair specialized in the avant-garde and modern art, and thus is a must-attend event for art lovers and collectors. The fair, which includes works that could be on display at any great museum, will debut the two most recent pieces by Manolo Valdés, and a small, delicate glass sculpture by Jaume Plensa entitled Laura’s frozen dreams, which is very similar to the installation in Madrid's Plaza de Colón. Composition aux bûches, 1950 The fair is taking place at a time when international observers are perceiving a slowdown in contemporary art sales and increased interest in the great masters of the 20th century. Several international contemporary art fairs are already increasing the presence of modern art or even holding parallel fairs. SAM consists of a group of 10 exhibitors: Galería Jorge Juan (Madrid), Galería Benlliure (Valencia), Galería Jordi Pascual (Barcelona), Jorge Alcolea (Madrid), Galería de Arte Pilares (Cuenca), Galería del Cisne (Madrid), Galería Fernando Pinós (Barcelona), Galería Montenegro (Vigo), Alcolea Nonell (Barcelona), and Librería Arte Moderno Andreda (Madrid). The 2019 SAM Guest Artist will be 92-year-old Francisco Farreras. Farreras boasts a long, highly productive career, with exhibits at the Biennale di Venezia, MoMA in New York, and Tate Gallery in London. At SAM, a selection of pieces from his latest period will be on display, in which he uses wood to create “wood reliefs” of exquisite formal perfection and artistic beauty. SAM is open from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., offering extended opening hours compared to other fairs, as well as a late night session until midnight on Saturday with surprises for our visitors. Art Gallery Tour will offer free guided tours every day at 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. (reserve a spot by writing to [email protected]), and invitations can be downloaded on the fair’s website (feriasam.com/descarga-invitacion). Other activities include the El Perfume del Vino experience, a novel way of reinterpreting art through the joint theoretical framework of “inhaled art” and relational art (sign up by writing to [email protected]). I believe in art's educational vocation and in training new collectors. Visitors will see works of art that they could find in any great museum, the difference being that at SAM, they will be able to acquire them. In the future we want to continue to be a small, specialized fair so as not to lose the magic that comes with being able to discuss the pieces with the dealers and discover the different anecdotes hiding behind each one.” Galería Jordi Pascual (Barcelona) will exhibit one of the few pieces available on the Spanish market by Fernand Léger, one of the protagonists of the Parisian interwar avant-garde of the first half of the 20th century; along with great painters such as Albert Ràfols Casamada, Emili Grau Sala, Antonio Saura, Esteban Vicente, Antoni Tàpies, Joan Miró, and more. The Madrid-based Jorge Alcolea gallery will show two drawings by Tamara de Lempicka which were on display in Paris as part of the exhibit La Reine de l’Art Decó, held in 2013 at the Pinacothèque de Paris; and Femme orientale et oiseau exotique, one of the key pieces of Salvador Dalí’s surrealist period, dated 1966 and characterized by its cheerful composition, lively colors, and oneiric associations. Visitors will also be able to view and acquire another work by Dalí: a sketch for one of the scenes from the Walt Disney film Destino. Alongside these pieces will be important works by Alberto Giacometti, Joan Miró, Maurice Utrillo, and the Ukrainian artist Sonia Delaunay, a key figure in abstract art and creator of Simultanism together with her husband. The historic Galería Benlliure (Valencia) will exhibit a significant selection of pieces by Esteban Vicente, Rafael Canogar, Juan Uslé, Antonio Saura, Luis Feito, Antoni Tàpies, Joan Miró, Miquel Navarro, and others, in which the standout piece is Abanico azul by Manolo Valdés. Galería Montenegro (Vigo) will show El arpa, by Austrian Adolfo Schlosser, which was on display at his solo exhibition at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in 2006. The fair also features the piece Nocturno by Rafael Zabaleta, which will be exhibited to the public after a stint in a private collection, and works by artists from the El Paso group, such as Manolo Millares. The veteran Jorge Juan gallery (Madrid), founded in 1977, will exhibit the exceptional piece El perro de Goya by Antonio Saura, one of the most important Spanish painters of the 20th century. It will also feature pieces by the Spanish painter Manuel Hernández Mompó from the late 1960s. The Galería del Cisne stand will offer a still life by Italian Gino Severini, one of the leaders of the Futurist movement; along with Fumador from Antoni Tàpies’ mature period, an excellent example of the Catalan artist's personal style. Miquel Barceló is a contemporary Spanish artist whose name has already gone down in art history. Barcelona-based gallery Fernando Pinós will feature one of the artist’s key pieces: Les Comptes, dated 1999. It will also exhibit Dama by Antonio Saura and Cuatro líneas verticales by Antoni Tàpies, among other pieces. Barcelona-based Alcolea Nonell will present a selection of works by Manolo Valdés, Juan Múñoz, and Bosco Sodi; along with a collection of sculptures by Jaume Plensa, Jorge Oteiza, Mimmo Paladino, and Rafael Canogar. Galería Pilares will exhibit an interesting compendium of works that features acclaimed contemporary Spanish artists, such as Luis Feito, member of the El Paso group in the 50s, and Miguel Ángel Moset. Lastly, Librería Arte Moderno Andreda will offer a carefully curated selection of modern art books, catalogues raisonnés – such as those of Antonio Miró and Pablo Palazuelo – and exhibition catalogs.
