Gent: Snoeck, 2017, 208 pp. isbn: 9789461613752. Price: eur 38 (hardback). Every two years in Brussels the Europalia Arts festival is organized. In 2017 Indonesia was chosen to be the focus in its series of cultural events and expo- sitions. Europalia was a prestigious event that was honored by the patronage of Indonesian President Joko Widodo and the Belgian King and Queen. The Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture was deeply involved in the plan- ning of Europalia, as well as counterparts in the Belgian government and in cultural institutions. This Europalia must have taken years to prepare. One of its features was an exposition in the Paleis voor Schone Kunsten (Center for Fine Arts) in Brussels (October 2017-January 2018) about ancestors and rituals in Indonesia. This theme was chosen as the remembrance of ances- tors throughout the history of the Archipelago—a lasting and recurrent fea- ture that is common to all parts of Indonesia, however different the format of this homage and the rituals surrounding it. Moreover, the theme is excel- lently suited for an exhibition as there are many objects that from a scholarly as well as an artistic viewpoint are interesting. In the catalogue of the exhi- bition about 125 objects are pictured, of which about 80 are accompanied by extensive explanations by experts from Indonesia and Europe. -

In Memoriam Jan Herman Van Roijen (1905-1991)
341 IN MEMORIAM JAN HERMAN VAN ROIJEN (1905-1991) The death of Herman van Roijen meant not only the disappearance of a very important personality from Dutch public life but also of a man of unusual qualities who made a special contribution to international relations of our age. His career was crowned by the outstanding ambassadorships in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. In all of these countries Herman gained not only personal friends, but also forged deep links, profound mutual understanding between governments of his country and the host state. He did much more, he contributed to the development of friendship between peoples. For he was indeed an unusual man. He prepared his doctoral thesis at Utrecht University in 1929 on 'The Legal Status of International Recognition of Newly Created States and Governments'. He could hardly guess that twenty years later he would be heading his country's delegation preparing a round table conference with Indonesia, a country which, formerly under control of the Netherlands, gained independence as one of the newly born states of the world community. Thus life offered him very many surprises but he lived up to them due to his capacity of mind and the special features of his character. Up to his last fatal illness he reflected his unusual personality, the eagerness to know and of absorbing as much knowledge as possible. Not insisting to convince people to his views he much rather helped them to find their own way. Hence it was his own courtesy -more I would say kindness- which attracted so many to seek his company. -

Bijmsholt het op enigszins meer waarderende wijze: „Wat van de arbeiders gezegd werd, gold ook voor de vrouwen: de vrijmaking der vrouw moet het werk der vrouw zelf zijn. Een krachtige persoonlijkheid was nodig — en kwam: W. Drucker, oprichtster der Vrije Vrouwenvereniging”. Mevrouw Drucker, dan ook terecht geëerd in een bescheiden standbeeld in Amsterdam, de stad die mede de stempel op haar werken drukte, was gesteund door haar vriendin Th. Schook-Haver, een vijftal mannen en een tiental vrouwen uit Gent, Wenen, Londen, Genève, Brussel, Leeuwarden en Amster dam op 8 Maart 1893 een „Weekblad voor de Vrouw” begonnen: Evolutie. Al in het 4e proefnummer wordt de kiesgerechtigdheid der vrouw aangepakt, zij het slechts voor de Kamers van Arbeid, destijds voorgesteld door de heren Pyttersen en Schimmelpen- ninck. Tegelijkertijd blijkt dat even te voren „mejuffrouw Gratio, een nog zeer jong meisje” Mr A. -

Brieven en dokumenten uit de jaren 1874-1875 9 Dit zeventiende deel bestrijkt een periode uit Multatuli's leven die wordt gedomineerd door de eerste reeks opvoeringen van Vorstenschool, dus tevens door het intensieve contact met Mina Krüseman, maanden lang vriendschappelijk, voorgoed vijandig daarna. Men zal in de nederlandse letteren geen tweede voorbeeld kunnen vinden van mensen die elkaar zo mateloos hebben bewonderd, die met zo'n elementaire heftigheid in botsing zijn gekomen en die elkander zo hartgrondig hebben veracht. In vergelijking met de week na week in monomane nuchterheid polemiserende Van Vloten, doet Mina Krüseman in haar uitbarstingen van gekwetste ijdelheid aan als een vulkanisch temperament. Behalve de twee bezoeken die zij aan Wiesbaden heeft gebracht, is er tot februari 1875 alleen maar schriftelijk contact geweest. Er werden over en weer dozijnen openhartige brieven gewisseld, en aangezien Mina Krüseman ook op reis van iedere brief kopie hield, hebben de hare zelfs in duplo bestaan. Toch is er, ondanks alle nasporingen, geen enkele autograaf teruggevonden, noch van háar hand, noch van de zijne. Al wat ons rest zijn de door haar al in 1877 rancuneus geselecteerde en ongeautoriseerd uitgegeven citaten en fragmenten, brokstukken die telkens de vraag doen rijzen wat er méer is geweest, dus ook wat zij ons voorgoed heeft onthouden. -

The period treated in this thesis is one which is often characterized as a transition between World War II and the Cold War. By approaching it instead as a window of opportunity – a period in which the governments of small states perceived both an unusual space and an urgent need to reevaluate security – the security policies of two small northwestern European countries, the Netherlands and Sweden, are subjected to a critical reappraisal. Through a systematic comparison of the security ideas and strategies in two countries that ended up with different positions on alignment/non-alignment during the Cold War, this dissertation sheds new light on the reasons for the development of those security policies as well as on their significance. -

Flatirons and the Folds of History On Archives, Cultural Heritage and Colonial Legacies Susan Legêne The notion oftraveling heritages implies movement, but it may not be immediately clear what it is that travels in the context of an archive and library like the Inter- national Information Centre and Archive for the Women’s Movement (iiav). The iiav is an institution that specializes in collecting, archiving, providing informa- tion services and producing of knowledge on women’s history and women in gen- eral (see chapter by Wieringa in this volume). Over the past seventy years, the iiav has become an internationally renowned center of expertise, with a unique and growing collection of archives, books and other materials related to a broad range of women’s movements and issues. When I look at the iiav’s library and archives, I see them not as repositories, but rather as dynamic processes. An archival collec- tion is not static. Collecting is obviously an activity, but the collections of books, papers, and objects are also, in a sense, active. New acquisitions influence how we look at what has been collected and preserved in the past. In this respect, archives like the iiav can be compared with a museum. The objects in the reserves and exhibition may be very valuable, but it is the dynamic of its acquisition and exhibition policies that keeps a museum connected to contem- porary society. We create our relationship to and awareness of cultural heritage over and over again. The critical issue for a museum, as for other cultural heri- tage institutions like archives and libraries is not about making new acquisitions and improving collection management and accessibility per se.
