My approach contextualizes the allegorical representations of nature and divine love in the religious, historical, and cultural milieu of the poem. The introductory chapter foregrounds the poem in two ways: first, in the theologization of 'nature' by the thirteenth century; second, in terms of a vernacular theology about Christ's Incarnation and Passion being for and about everyone because they redeem the human body and soul. Chapter Two introduces natural and cupidinous love, the framework in which the philosophical discussion of the redemption of the human body and soul occurs. The third chapter compares and contrasts Nature and Genius, the allegorical representations of nature and divine love in the poem. Chapter Four, through an examination of the Park of the Lamb, the garden of Deduit and the hierarchy of 'worlds' presented in the Roman, reveals how it is possible for humankind to live according to God's purpose. -

Degree Awarded June 2019. ii © 2019 Annie Lee Narver iii DISSERTATION ABSTRACT Annie Lee Narver Doctor of Philosophy Department of English June 2019 Title: Mapping Human Virtue and the Ethics of Desire: the Ludic(rous) as Umpire Building on the assumption that society constructs ideology through, according to Louis Althusser, “apparatuses,” this dissertation explores how medieval romances written from the twelfth through fourteenth century exploit alterity by repurposing the Chanson de Roland’s portrayals of Eastern others and women to negotiate the exigencies contemporary to them. The proof texts, in addition to the Oxford Roland, include martial romances, deemed martial because the hero serves a liege lord rather than a lady: Guy of Warwick and The Sowdone of Babylone. In these texts, knights prove themselves men by vanquishing a sensationalized Eastern foe. -

Jean De Meun's Narrative Stylistics and Readership
Jean De Meun’s Narrative Stylistics and Readership Lee Dongchoon [Abstract] Unlike a popular narrative, meanings in Jean de Meun’s narratives cannot be pursued by simply following the omniscient narrator’s guideline. His narrator intends to keep distance between himself and his audience rather than a perfect accord in understanding a tale or figuring out the authorial meaning. It is through the various narrative devices that Jean de Meun frustrates his audience from accepting the narrator’s words and attitudes at face value. By calling his narrator’s trustworthiness into question, he offers his audience the chance to rely on the judicious and thoughtful independence of the mind in sorting out the complex messages within a narrative. The effect of distancing between the narrator and the audience through the storytelling devices is to make it possible for them to exert their own imagination and intelligence in grasping the meaning. In short, the audience with keen perception and intelligence are required actively to mine for meaning or decide upon the truth or authenticity among multiple voices. Reading Jean de Meun demands of the audience an act of will. Key Words: Jean de Meun, Roman de la Rose, Rhetorical Devices, Narratology, Readership 34 영미연구 제37집 Although it might be difficult to demonstrate the full extent of Ovid’s influence on Jean de Meun, we can see the glimpses of Ovid in Jean de Meun’s work, Le Roman de la Rose on a variety of levels. First, Jean de Meun’s debt to Ovid is immense in the former’s borrowings of such Ovidian myths as the story of Venus and Adonis (15645-737) and the Pygmalion story (20787-21184).1) In fact, the critics have been wrestling over how and why Jean de Meun adapted the Ovidan myths in his tale.2) Besides Ovid’s role as a provider of storytelling materials for the French raconteur, Ovid’s influence on Jean de Meun on the level of narrative technique is found in Jean de Meun’s work as well. -

Substance and Providence in the Old French Theological Romance Abstract The doctrine of divine providence was considered fundamental to understanding the nature of reality in medieval Christian orthodoxy. One of our greatest modern impediments to proper understanding of this law are the radically different ontologies that flourished in the Latin estW through the recuperation of Ancient thought, most notably in the divisions between the Platonists and the Aristotelians. Whereas Biblical exegesis owed more to Augustine's Platonism, the rise of Aristotelian thought in the university curriculum entailed a serious threat to the doctrine of providence. The translation and dissemination of Islamic Aristotelians revealed an almost identical challenge to Islamic orthodoxy on the same matter. Philosophical, and especially ontological, speculation on the nature of substance (ontology) was therefore fertile ground for heresy. The main works under examination are the anonymous Queste del Saint Graal and the continuation of the Roman de la Rose by Jean de Meun. Deeply imbued with Augustinian figuralism and Biblical history, the Queste strongly distinguishes itself from the rest of the Lancelot en Prose, most notably La Mort le Roi Artu, in its theological purpose. -

McCabe Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Medieval Studies University of Toronto 2010 Abstract Many critics have seen Confessio Amantis as a work of reformist rhetoric that, drawing deeply on medieval Aristotelian conflations of ethics and politics, urges readers toward personal moral reform as the crucial means by which to heal the body politic. In such a view, the moral and public interests on full display in Mirour de l’Omme , Vox Clamantis , and elsewhere remain central to Gower’s purpose in Confessio . However, while Mirour and Vox also foreground religious concerns, Confessio is often seen as “secular” in a modern sense. I argue in this dissertation that Confessio indeed bears strong affinities to Gower’s other religious-ethical-political works, and that the main differences that set it apart from them must be understood in connection with Gower’s decision to write this work “in oure Englissh.” Notwithstanding its debt to aristocratic culture, Confessio imagines a broader and more popular audience than do Vox and Mirour . Gower’s novel language choice has major implications especially for Confessio ’s uncharacteristically delicate handling of religion. Chapter 1 examines Confessio ’s Ovidian debt and suggests that Confessio ’s many invocations of Metamorphoses , given that poem’s fourteenth-century reception, align Confessio with Ovidian universal satire in a way that suggests totalizing religious-ethical-political synthesis. -
A Study of Guillaume De Palerne As a Self-Reflexive Romance
Reflections of writing, rewriting, and reading in twelfth-century French literature: A study of Guillaume de Palerne as a self-reflexive romance Eleanor Hodgson A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of French University of Sheffield —July 2015— Abstract This thesis explores Guillaume de Palerne as a self-reflexive romance in which twelfth-century practices of writing, rewriting, and reading are reflected in the narrative. As a romance excluded from the main corpus of texts analysed in medieval studies, Guillaume suffered from critical neglect throughout much of the twentieth century. However, a recent rise in interest in this work has called for its integration into mainstream scholarship. This study develops this trend by examining the contribution that Guillaume can make to existing knowledge of romance production and reception. Detailed analysis of Guillaume and its main themes is presented alongside discussion of the intertextual rewriting found within the text. Taking a bipartite form divided into four chapters, the first half of the study explores transformation, before moving on to the notions of doubling and correspondence, and finally to recognition. The thesis argues that the ‘intertextual game of romance’ played between poet and audience is reflected in the Guillaume narrative through the stress placed on transformation and recognition. By exploring doubling and correspondence, this analysis also highlights the relationship between transformation and recognition in the narrative, which in turn mirrors the partnership between poet and audience in romance creation. With its primary focus on the text, this study is facilitated by an engagement with theoretical frameworks, particularly of intertextuality, that discuss medieval composition and reception, stemming both from medieval studies and from modern literary theory. -
