  • The Holy See
The Holy See POPE JOHN PAUL II GENERAL AUDIENCE Wednesday, 5 November 1997 We can count on Mary’s intercession 1. Down the centuries Marian devotion has enjoyed an interrupted development. In addition to the traditional liturgical feasts dedicated to the Lord’s Mother, there has been a flowering of countless expressions of piety, often approved and encouraged by the Church’s Magisterium. Many Marian devotions and prayers are an extension of the liturgy itself and have sometimes contributed to its overall enrichment, as is the case with the Office in honour of the Blessed Virgin and other pious compositions which have become part of the Breviary. The first known Marian invocation goes back to the third century and begins with the words: "We fly to thy patronage (Sub tuum praesidium), O holy Mother of God...". However, since the 14th century the most common prayer among Christians has been the "Hail Mary". By repeating the first words the angel addressed to Mary, it leads the faithful to contemplate the mystery of the Incarnation. The Latin word "Ave" translates the Greek word "Chaire": it is an invitation to joy and could be translated "Rejoice". The Eastern hymn "Akathistos" repeatedly stresses this "rejoice". In the "Hail Mary" the Blessed Virgin is called "full of grace" and is thus recognized for the perfection and beauty of her soul. The phrase "The Lord is with thee" reveals God’s special personal relationship with Mary, which fits into the great plan for his covenant with all humanity. Next, the statement "Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus" expresses the fulfilment of the divine plan in the Daughter of Zion’s virginal body.

  • BATES, JAMES M., DMA Music in Honor of the Virgin Mary
BATES, JAMES M., D.M.A. Music in Honor of the Virgin Mary during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. (2010) Directed by Dr. Welborn Young. 50 pp. Veneration of the Virgin Mary was one of the most important aspects of Christianity during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and sacred music of the time incorporated many Marian concepts. The Virgin Mary was considered the greatest intercessor with God and Christ at a time when fear of Purgatory was strong. Prayers and devotions seeking her aid were among the most significant aspects of spiritual life, and texts of this kind were set to music for devotional use. Beyond her identity as intercessor, there were many additional conceptions of her, and these also found musical expression. The purpose of this study was, first, to explore the basic elements of Marian devotion, and, second, to examine how veneration of Mary was expressed musically. Seven musical compositions from c. 1200-1600 are examined as representative examples. The ―Marian aspects‖ of some compositions may be as straightforward as the use of texts that address Mary, or they may be found in musical and textual symbolism. Of special interest is a particular genre of motet used in private devotions. Precise and detailed information about how sacred music was used in the Middle Ages and Renaissance is scarce, but evidence related to this particular kind of devotional motet helps bring together a number of elements related to Marian meditative practices and the kind of physical settings in which these took place, allowing a greater understanding of the overall performance context of such music.

The origins of this belief are in the earliest attempts of the Fathers of the Church and Christian writers to .reflect on the treasure of divine revelation. Mary's presence and mission were to be found in the context of the mystery of the Incarnate Word, to which she had a double relation: to the Word of God Himself (who became her Son and our Redeemer); and to us (being human like us, she shared our common lot as God's crea ture, called to communion with Him through grace and eternal life).

Give us strength to proclaim what in silence we have heard. How wondrous this cup, the font of mercy it unseals: Jesus thirsts for the one who in faith before him kneels. First the chalice is raised, then his Blood for us outpoured How his action and word unite in splendid accord. Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God Sub tuum praesidium January 1, 2018 (10:00am) Readings: Numbers 6: 22-27; Galatians 4: 4-7; Luke 2:16-21 Most Catholics do not instinctively look towards Egypt for inspiration, as we much more readily think of Bethlehem as the birthplace of our faith. And rightly so, for indeed it was. And yet the ancient roots of our Christian faith quickly reached to North Africa and as we begin a new calendar year, we do so under the protection of Mary, the Mother of God. ln the heart of Manchester, England, a city known more today for its 116-year-old championship soccer club than anything else, rests a papyrus fragment in the John Rylands Library. Little larger than an iPhone 6 Plus, it contains Greek letters written in brown ink. Dated to the mid-3rd century, it contains a prayer to the Blessed Mother, the oldest prayer to Mary in existence. The fragment was acquired in Egypt in 1917.1 It was there that the brief prayer to Mary was composed. We pray most fervently when we are in need, and like many prayers, it was born in time of difficulty due to Roman persecution. In the mid-third century, horrible persecutions were being unleashed all across the Roman Empire, and the monks of Egypt composed a hymn to the Blessed Mother begging for her protection. The Greek original came down to the Western Church in its Latin version, the Sub tuum praesidium. The prayer thus precedes the complete Ave Maria by several centuries in Christian prayer.

  • Celebrating and Venerating Mary and the Saints in Early Christianity
Department of Theology T, 2:00 – 4:30 Fall, 2011 134 Malloy Hall THEO 83419 Sec. 01 Celebrating and Venerating Mary and the Saints in Early Christianity Maxwell E. Johnson 432 Malloy Hall 1-4118 The eminent Eastern Christian liturgiologist Robert Taft has written of the methodological turn his own work has taken in recent years, saying that: “In so doing I have, in a sense, been responding to my own appeal, made years ago, that we ‘integrate into our work the methods of the relatively recent pietá popolare or annales schools of Christian history in Europe’ and study liturgy not just from the top down, i.e., in its official or semi-official texts, but also from the bottom up, ‘as something real people did’.” And it is becoming increasingly clear in scholarship that what “real people did” is to be read, precisely, in the development of the “popular” practices and beliefs associated with the cult of the martyrs and later saints at their shrines in the overall shaping of late antique culture, religion, and society. This research seminar in early Christian feasts will focus on the development of Mary and the Saints in relationship to what has been often assumed to be the central focus of the liturgical year. The term “Early Christianity” in the title of this course is intended to include early medieval authors and texts in East and West (e.g., Bernard of Clairvaux). Requirements include the leading of at least two seminars and a major research paper. • Historical Forms
Back CHAPTER ONE Historical Forms While it seems indisputable that Pope Saint John Paul II gave enormous impetus to the promotion of consecration or entrustment to Mary from the outset of his pontificate to its conclusion, it is equally clear that this practice is very ancient in the Church. Further on in this study, we will consider the Scriptural bases for this practice so deeply rooted in the Church; but for the moment, let us look at some of its principal expressions in the life of the Church. The Patristic Period It does not seem presumptuous to see the first adumbrations of the tradition, which would come to be known as Marian consecration in the Church in the most ancient recorded prayer to the Mother of God, the Sub tuum præsidium.1 Up until the early last century, this prayer, which was known to exist in all of the liturgical families in the Church, was thought to be medieval. 1 Discovered in 1917, an Egyptian papyrus now kept in the John Rylands Library in Manchester, England contains the text of this Marian prayer, which makes it the oldest invocation of the Mother of God which has thus far been found. With this request for intercession the Holy Father asks the faithful of all the world to pray that the Holy Mother of God place the Church THE ROSARY beneath her protective mantle: to preserve her from the attacks by the devil, the great accuser, and at the same time to make her more aware of the faults, the errors and the abuses committed in the present and in the past, so that evil may not prevail. The Holy Father has also asked that the recitation of the Holy Rosary during the month of October conclude with the prayer written by Leo XIII: The Holy Father invited all the faithful throughout the world to conclude the recitation of the Rosary with the ancient invocation “Sub Tuum Praesidium”, and with the prayer to Saint Michael Archangel that he protect us and help us in the struggle against evil. The prayer – the Pontiff affirmed is the weapon against the Great Accuser who “goes around the world seeking to accuse”. Only prayer can defeat him.
