The altar is traditionally dedicated to Mary, the mother of God as May is the Marian month when Catholics give special praise and honour to Jesus’ mother Mary, gifted to us as our mother too. May is also the first month of summer, so it comes to pass that altars which are created during this time are adorned with flowers that bloom at this time of year and with particular prayers, or itemsof devotion such as rosary beads to decorate this special space and to express our love and honour to Mary. Here are a couple of steps that you and your family can follow when preparing to have a May Altar in your home….. 1: Plan a nature walk Decide upon a place to go for a walk together. On your nature walk, try to locate some of the following traditional flowers that have been used for May altars over the generations. It is good to choose wildflowers, if you can, which are far better for the environment. Cut commercial flowers can sometimes come with a big carbon footprint, which Pope Francis encourages us to try to reduce. The Holy See POPE JOHN PAUL II GENERAL AUDIENCE Wednesday, 5 November 1997 We can count on Mary’s intercession 1. Down the centuries Marian devotion has enjoyed an interrupted development. In addition to the traditional liturgical feasts dedicated to the Lord’s Mother, there has been a flowering of countless expressions of piety, often approved and encouraged by the Church’s Magisterium. Many Marian devotions and prayers are an extension of the liturgy itself and have sometimes contributed to its overall enrichment, as is the case with the Office in honour of the Blessed Virgin and other pious compositions which have become part of the Breviary. The first known Marian invocation goes back to the third century and begins with the words: "We fly to thy patronage (Sub tuum praesidium), O holy Mother of God...". However, since the 14th century the most common prayer among Christians has been the "Hail Mary". By repeating the first words the angel addressed to Mary, it leads the faithful to contemplate the mystery of the Incarnation. The Latin word "Ave" translates the Greek word "Chaire": it is an invitation to joy and could be translated "Rejoice". The Eastern hymn "Akathistos" repeatedly stresses this "rejoice". In the "Hail Mary" the Blessed Virgin is called "full of grace" and is thus recognized for the perfection and beauty of her soul. The phrase "The Lord is with thee" reveals God’s special personal relationship with Mary, which fits into the great plan for his covenant with all humanity. Next, the statement "Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus" expresses the fulfilment of the divine plan in the Daughter of Zion’s virginal body. -

Anja Becker, Julia Schmeer Ave maris stella Hans Sachs und Maria im Spannungsfeld von Tradition, Innovation und Reformation Mit einer Vorüberlegung zum Analysieren vormoderner Übersetzungen Andreas Kraß hat in seinen Studien zu deutschen Übersetzungen lateinischer Sequenzen, insbesondere des Stabat mater dolorosa, darauf hingewiesen, dass mittelalterlich-volkssprachliches Übersetzen sich als Adaptation vollzieht: Der Prätext werde hierbei an die konkrete Lebenssituation der zeitgenössischen Rezipienten angepasst, wobei vornehmlich pragmatische, literaturhistorische und frömmigkeitsgeschichtliche Faktoren bestimmend seien.1 Die meisten deut- schen Sequenzübersetzungen emanzipieren sich deutlich von ihren lateini- schen Vorlagen,2 daneben gibt es aber auch solche Versionen, die sich dem Prätext subordinieren, Kraß bezeichnet diese als ‚glossierende Adaptationen‘.3 In diesem Beitrag sollen Übersetzungen des Marienhymnus Ave maris stella untersucht werden. Im Allgemeinen kann man feststellen, dass sich volks- sprachliche Übertragungen lateinischer Hymnen weitaus weniger von ihren lateinischen Vorlagen emanzipieren, als dies bei deutschen Sequenzüberset- zungen der Fall ist. Hier kommt die besondere Dignität und Erhabenheit des Hymnus zum Tragen, immerhin stellte bereits Augustin die feierlichen Preislie- der Gottes auf eine Stufe mit den Psalmen.4 Das manifeste Bestreben, diese heiligen, im monastischen Stundengebet verankerten Gesänge möglichst un- verändert in die Volkssprache zu übersetzen, verwundert deshalb nicht. Saint Dominic had been to southern France to preach against the Albigensian heresy, which denied the goodness of creation and held that the spirit is good but that matter (including the body) is evil. A common saying in Albigensianism was “the body is a tomb,” suggesting that true freedom is realized only when one is freed from the flesh. This heresy held that there are two supreme beings: a good god who created the spirit world, and an evil god who created the material world. Since matter was evil to the Albigensians, marriage and procreation were evil. Jesus was not thought to be human, nor was Mary considered the mother of God. Albigensianism denied the humanity of Christ. The Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus were only illusions, and the whole concept of the cross in the Christian life was rejected. Cavins, J. (2004). Based on the thirteenth-century hymn used for vespers on the feast days of the Virgin Mary and of other female saints, the words are in seven litany-like verses that open with praise for the Virgin Mary, implore for intercession in the central verses, and end with a doxological commendation of the Trinity (ex. 1 and 2). From Neumes to Notation: A Thousand Years of Passing On the Music by Charric Van der Vliet Classical musicians, in the terminology of the 17th and 18th century musical historians, like to sneer at earlier music as "primitive", "rough", or "uncouth". The fact of the matter is that during the thousand years from 450 AD to about 1450 AD, Western Civilization went from no recording of music at all to a fully formed method of passing on the most intricate polyphony. That is no small achievement. It's attractive, I suppose, to assume the unthinking and barbaric nature of our ancestors, since it implies a certain smugness about "how far we've come." I've always thought that painting your ancestors as stupid was insulting both to them and to yourself. The barest outline of a thousand year journey only hints at the difficulties our medieval ancestors had to face to be musical. This is an attempt at sketching that outline. Each of the sub-headings of this lecture contains material for lifetimes of musical study. It is hoped that outlining this territory may help shape where your own interests will ultimately lie. Neumes: In the beginning, choristers needed reminders as to which way notes went. "That fifth note goes DOWN, George!" This situation was remedied by noting when the movement happened and what direction, above the text, with wavy lines. "Neume" was the adopted term for this. It's a Middle English corruption of the Greek word for breath, "pneuma." Then, to specify note's exact pitch was the next innovation.
