Dynamic Generation of Musical Notation from MusicXML Input on an Android Tablet THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Science in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Laura Lynn Housley Graduate Program in Computer Science and Engineering The Ohio State University 2012 Master's Examination Committee: Rajiv Ramnath, Advisor Jayashree Ramanathan Copyright by Laura Lynn Housley 2012 Abstract For the purpose of increasing accessibility and customizability of sheet music, an application on an Android tablet was designed that generates and displays sheet music from a MusicXML input file. Generating sheet music on a tablet device from a MusicXML file poses many interesting challenges. When a user is allowed to set the size and colors of an image, the image must be redrawn with every change. Instead of zooming in and out on an already existing image, the positions of the various musical symbols must be recalculated to fit the new dimensions. These changes must preserve the relationships between the various musical symbols. Other topics include the laying out and measuring of notes, accidentals, beams, slurs, and staffs. In addition to drawing a large bitmap, an application that effectively presents sheet music must provide a way to scroll this music across a small tablet screen at a specified tempo. A method for using animation on Android is discussed that accomplishes this scrolling requirement. Also a generalized method for writing text-based documents to describe notations similar to musical notation is discussed. This method is based off of the knowledge gained from using MusicXML. -

A term in Western music theory with three main applications, all connected with the above meanings of modus: the relationship between the note values longa and brevis in late medieval notation; interval, in early medieval theory; most significantly, a concept involving scale type and melody type. The term 'mode' has always been used to designate classes of melodies, and in this century to designate certain kinds of norm or model for composition or improvisation as well. Certain pheno mena in folksong and in non-Western music are related to this last meaning, and are discussed below in §§IV and V. When we study the musical repertoire of the Medievallaude 1, we find a situation qui te different from that of Provençal, French, or Spanish lyric poetry and from that of the German minnesingers. In Italy, there existed a repertoire of rcligious songs in the verna cular language dedicated to Christ, Our Lady, and the various Saints, generally anonymous, and composed far the use of the faithful of the confraternita - something unknown in other countries. By vir tue of the literary subjects of their texts, by their melodies, and by thei r musical notation, these laude became, in the eyes of the world, a manifestation of a very pronounced Italian artistic indivi duality. In the repertoire of lyric monody of other European countries, we fmd certain melodies of a traditional, popular vein which remind us of others - international ones. In the laude, on the other hand, this similarity to international tunes is absent; they are exclusively national in character. It is, in fact, remarkable that the laude reflect no melodie analogies with either international folklore or with the profane or religious lyric poetry of other European countries. Staccato marks may appear on notes of any value, shortening their performed duration without speeding the music itself. Spiccato Indicates a longer silence after the note (as described above), making the note very short. Usually applied to quarter notes or shorter. (In the past, this marking’s meaning was more ambiguous: it sometimes was used interchangeably with staccato, and sometimes indicated an accent and not staccato. These usages are now almost defunct, but still appear in some scores.) In string instruments this indicates a bowing technique in which the bow bounces lightly upon the string. Accent Play the note louder, or with a harder attack than surrounding unaccented notes. May appear on notes of any duration. Tenuto This symbol indicates play the note at its full value, or slightly longer. It can also indicate a slight dynamic emphasis or be combined with a staccato dot to indicate a slight detachment. Marcato Play the note somewhat louder or more forcefully than a note with a regular accent mark (open horizontal wedge). In organ notation, this means play a pedal note with the toe. Above the note, use the right foot; below the note, use the left foot. -

Znamenny Chant and Stolp Notation1 In the primary tradition of Znamenny singing, almost all chant books of the Russian liturgical tradition used Stolp (Znamenny) notation. The Slavonic word stolp (pillar) describes the eight-week cycle of the Octoechos, while the Slavonic term znamya means “mark”, “note”, or “neume”. Slavic Stolp notation (along with early chant repertoire) has been in use since the tenth century (having been derived from Coislin B Palaeobyzantine notation), and in its latest stage of development it is still used by Russian Old Ritualists up to the present time. Beyond the basic level of neume-by-neume notation, Stolp chanting includes three methods of presenting complex melodic features: popévki, litsá and fíty, each of which were traditionally memorized by singers. (Popévki, also called kokízy2, are established sequences of neumes which are the essential “building blocks” of Znamenny chants, while litsa and fity are more lengthy and complex melodic patterns.) These contextual groups of symbols are usually referred to as “múdrye stróki” (“wise lines” or short- hand), indicating the use of “tainozamknénnost” (“secret-closure” or encryption). Grade 9 Analysis- Rhythm and Meter in Macbeth Iambic Pentameter (Nobles) What is it? Shakespeare's sonnets are written predominantly in a meter called iambic pentameter, a rhyme scheme in which each sonnet line consists of ten syllables. The syllables are divided into five pairs called iambs or iambic feet. An iamb is a metrical unit made up of one unstressed syllable followed by one stressed syllable. An example of an iamb would be good BYE. A line of iambic pentameter flows like this: baBOOM / baBOOM / baBOOM / baBOOM / baBOOM. Why does Shakespeare use it? When Shakespeare's characters speak in verse (iambic pentameter), they are usually the noble (aristocratic) characters, and their speech represents their high culture and position in society. It gives the play a structured consistency, and when this is changed in instances of prose such as when Macbeth writes to Lady Macbeth and when Lady Macduff talks with her son, these are normally instances where a situation is abnormal e.g. when the Porter babbles in his drunken haze. Trochaic Tetrameter (Witches) What is it? Trochaic tetrameter is a rapid meter of poetry consisting of four feet of trochees. A trochee is made up of one stressed syllable followed by one unstressed syllable (the opposite of an iamb). Here is the flow of a line of trochaic tetrameter: BAboom / BAboom / BAboom / BAboom. Why does Shakespeare use it? The witches’ speech patterns create a spooky mood from the start of the scene. Beginning with the second line, they speak in rhyming couplets of trochaic tetrameter. The falling rhythm and insistent rhyme emphasize the witchcraft they practice while they speak—boiling some sort of potion in a cauldron. -

Rhythmic Elasticity and Metric Transformation in Tunisian Sṭambēlī Richard C. Jankowsky he study of musical microtiming, that is, the analysis of the actual durations of T rhythmic events in performance, has gained considerable momentum over the past decade.1 Of particular interest to scholars working among a diversity of global musical traditions has been the issue of non-isochronous beat subdivision. This issue has brought music theorists and ethnomusicologists into productive discussion and has produced a corpus of case studies ranging from jazz (Benadon 2006), Viennese waltz (Gabrielsson, Bengtsson, and Gabrielsson 1983), and Scandinavian dance music (Kvifte 2007) to Brazilian samba (Gerischer 2006), Baluchi folk music (During 1997), and Malian jembe drumming (Polak 2010). These case studies put considerable pressure on the widespread assumption that an isochronous “common fast pulse” must serve as the lowest metric referent level (see Kvifte 2007). As the data on rhythmic timing accumulates, it is becoming clear that many styles of music around the world rely on rhythmic structures that do not subdivide the beat into nominally equidistant pulses. Rather, they are based on timing patterns that, although structurally consistent, are not reducible to rational binary and ternary subdivisions. Rainer Polak’s (2010) quantitative study of Malian jembe rhythms, for instance, shows that jembe timing patterns do not conform to the kind of isochronous beat subdivisions advanced by much of the literature on West African meter. 1 An earlier, condensed version of this article was presented at the conference “Musical Metre in Comparative Perspective,” April 4–6, 2013, in Köln, Germany. Music throughout history started as mostly vocal music, it was transmitted orally with no written notation. During the early ninth and tenth century the written tradition started to be seen and developed. This marked the beginnings of music notation. Music notation has gone through many stages of development from neumes, square notes, and four-line staff, to modern notation. Although modern notation works very well, it is not necessarily superior to methods used in the Renaissance and Medieval periods. In Western music neumes are the name given to the first type of notation used. -

He was the second of the two older brothers of Alfred Tennyson, with whom he matriculated at Cambridge in 1828. Charles was graduated in 1832, and after his ordination in 1835 he was appointed curate of Tealby. Later the same year he became vicar of Grasby; then in 1836 he married Louisa Sellwood, sister to Emily Sellwood, who later married Alfred Tennyson. The next year he inherited several hundred acres of land from his great-uncle Samuel Turner of Caistor. At this time he assumed the additional surname of Turner which he used the rest of his life.* Shortly before his marriage Turner had overcome an addiction to opium which resulted from his using the drug to relieve neuralgic pain; however, he soon resumed the use of opium. His wife helped to free him of the habit once more, but, in so doing, she lost her own health and had to be placed under medical care. -
