    What Is the Angelus? “The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary…” D.D. Emmons The Catholic Answer 4/4/2011 Among our many Catholic devotions, few are more beautiful or have been contemplated more often than the Angelus. Designed to commemorate the mystery of the Incarnation and pay homage to Mary’s role in salvation history, it has long been part of Catholic life. Around the world, three times every day, the faithful stop whatever they are doing and with the words “The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary” begin this simple yet beautiful prayer. But why do we say the Angelus at all, much less three times a day? A review of Church history shows that this devotion did not appear suddenly, but developed over several centuries. Called By the Bell Most Church historians agree that the Angelus can be traced back to 11th- century Italy, where Franciscan monks said three Hail Marys during night prayers, at the last bell of the day. Over time, pastors encouraged their Catholic flocks to end each day in a similar fashion by saying three Hail Marys. In the villages, as in the monasteries, a bell was rung at the close of the day reminding the laity of this special prayer time. The evening devotional practice soon spread to other parts of Christendom, including England. Toward the end of the 11th century, the Normans invaded and occupied England. In order to ensure control of the populace, the Normans rang a curfew bell at the end of each day reminding the locals to extinguish all fires, get off the streets and retire to their homes.

    The Holy See BENEDICT XVI ANGELUS Saint Peter's Square Sunday, 20 January 2013 [Video] Dear Brothers and Sisters, Today the liturgy proposes the Gospel episode of the wedding at Cana, recounted by John, an eyewitness of the event. This episode has been allocated to this Sunday which immediately follows the Christmas season because, together with the visit of the Magi from the East and the Baptism of Jesus, it forms the trilogy of the Epiphany, in other words the manifestation of Christ. The miracle of the wedding at Cana is in fact “the first of his signs” (Jn 2:11), that is, the first miracle that Jesus worked with which he showed his glory in public, inspiring faith in his disciples. Let us briefly recall the events that occurred during that wedding feast in Cana of Galilee. It happened that there was not enough wine and Mary, the Mother of Jesus, pointed this out to her Son. He answered her that his hour had not yet come; but then acquiesced to Mary’s request and, having had the six large jars filled with water, he transformed the water into wine, an excellent wine, better than the previous one. With this “sign” Jesus revealed himself as the messianic Bridegroom come to establish with his people the new and eternal covenant, in accordance with the prophets’ words: “as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you” (Is 62:5). Moreover, wine is a symbol of this joy of love; but it also alludes to the blood that Jesus was to pour out at the end to seal his nuptial pact with humanity.

    On the Fittingness of the Title Mediatrix of All Graces as applied to the Blessed Virgin Mary M E L I S S A E ITENMILLER Dominican House of Studie s I. Introduction Most Protestants and even some Catholics balk at the idea of Mary and the saints interceding for us here on earth, often citing the Scriptural text which de- clares, “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Tim 2:5).1 How much more chagrin and shock they must feel, then, should they hear the popular title, “Mediatrix,” applied to Mary, as is the case in popular devotion and in various ecclesial documents. In this essay, I propose to show that the title, “Mediatrix of All Graces,” is fit- tingly applied to the Blessed Virgin due to her participation in Christ’s mediation, which, in her case, is a participation beyond that of any other creature, on account of her divine maternity, her special role in our redemption as the Coredemptrix and New Eve, and her spiritual motherhood of all mankind. To demonstrate this, I will first discuss what is meant by “mediator” in gen- eral, and then, in particular, when referred to Christ in 1 Timothy 2:5, as cited above. I will also show how all Christians, and in a special way, the Most Blessed Virgin, are called to participate in Christ’s mediation. Next I will review the title of “Mediatrix” as used of the Blessed Virgin both by some of the early Church fathers and other saints, as well as in ecclesial documents up to the present date.

PRELIMINARY NOTE Nature and Scope This liturgical formation program is an organic study plan of the liturgy; it contains suggestions for liturgical practice during those three basic periods of “first formation” in Servite religious life: the pre-novitiate, the novitiate and the time of temporary profession. It is an attempt to guarantee and facilitate a unified and gradual and formation for candidates preparing for temporary and solemn profession. It has been drawn up so that attendance at colleges and universities could be easily accommodated in the post-novitiate period, since this is the usual practice. The program is laid out in sections devoted to the various stages of formation followed by the problems that could occur in each stage along with possible solutions. There are also suggestions for reading and liturgical experiments in each stage. The goal of each stage of formation and how to achieve that goal is clearly described in the following sections. Guidelines To understand and carry out this program proper attention must be paid to the appropriate paragraphs of the Ratio Institutionis and the following guidelines: a) This Program of Liturgical Formation does not intend to neglect any of the possible forms of prayer.   • Celebrations of the Annunciation
    CELEBRATIONS OF THE ANNUNCIATION INTRODUCTION 1. The title “celebration of the Annunciation” designates a celebrational form in which this pious exercise is placed within a wider biblical-prayer context. 2. Three forms of celebration are proposed, each centered on a Gospel text referring to the mystery of the Incarnation: the first, Behold the Handmaid of the Lord, on Luke 1: 26-38; the second, It Is by the Holy Spirit That She Has Conceived This Child, on Matthew 1: 18-25; the third, The Word Was Made flesh, on John 1: 1-14. I. STRUCTURE 3. The structure of the three celebrations is identical. Each celebration follows a classic pattern to which some new elements have been added. Each reflects the continuity of the mystery in the various stages of the plan of salvation: from the prophetic affirmation in the Hebrew Scriptures to fulfillment in the fullness of time and continuation in the life of the Church. Beginning of the celebration 4. The beginning of the celebration includes an invitation to praise, a greeting which may be followed by a brief introduction, and a hymn. The invitation to praise is made up of two verses. The first, "Announce the salvation of the Lord," is common to all three forms and exhorts the faithful to continue to proclaim among the peoples the message of salvation brought to Mary by Gabriel. The second verse is different in each form and is a doxology addressed to either the Father or Christ. The hymn, in accord with the particular function of this literary form, reflects the theme of the celebration and introduces the contemplation of the mystery.

The Ave Maria remains the most widely repeated prayer in Christian devotional life, and music has played a critical role in its formation and propagation. This article reviews the essential contribution of music in the dissemination of texts based on the original verses from the gospel of Luke, with new evidence concerning the tradition of affixing a petition to the core devotion. While the Ave Maria remained unfixed in form and function until the sixteenth century, this article presents three significant examples from the corpus of Ars Antiqua polyphony in which versions of the text that include both the biblical verses and a supplicatory conclusion are not only used, but are also emphasised through polyphonic techniques. Ave Maria, Gratia plena, Dominus tecum, Benedicta tu in mulieribus, Et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus. Sancta Maria, mater dei, Ora pro nobis peccatoribus, Nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen. Veneration of the Holy Mother of God Popular devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary is an important and universal ecclesial phenomenon. Its expressions are multifarious and its motivation very profound, deriving as it does from the People of God’s faith in, and love for, Christ, the Redeemer of mankind, and from an awareness of the salvific mission that God entrusted to Mary of Nazareth, because of which she is Mother not only of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, but also of mankind in the order of grace. Indeed, the faithful easily understand the vital link uniting Son and Mother. They realize that the Son is God and that she, the Mother, is also their mother. They intuit the immaculate holiness of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and in venerating her as the glorious queen of Heaven, they are absolutely certain that she who is full of mercy intercedes for them. Hence, they confidently have recourse to her patronage. The poorest of the poor feel especially close to her. They know that she, like them, was poor, and greatly suffered in meekness and patience. They can identify with her suffering at the crucifixion and death of her Son, as well as rejoice with her in his resurrection. The faithful joyfully celebrate her feasts, make pilgrimage to her sanctuary, sing hymns in her honor, and make votive offerings to her.
