I rejoice in the new orientation of your Review. I read the good study ofDam Murray in the issue of February, 1957, with great pleasure. I had already read it in the Downside Review and I am glad that you have presented it to the American public. The objectives brought forth by Dam Murray appear to be serious to me. I could not say that I am as well satisfied with the reply to this article which appeared in the issue of May, 1957, under the title ""The Forest and the Trees,'1'1 signed by J. Robert Carroll. I may be wrong, but it seems to me that your distinguished correspondent does not answer with precision or in a· relevant manner. In my opinion he remains in the realm of vague generalities. Contrary to what this distinguished con-espondent may think, it seems evident that everyone has the right to blame any theory if it is lacking in logic and becomes rather inconsequential; and, it rests rather upon the defenders of this theory to prove their logic, espe'" cially on the points vv-hich appear to be at fault. It matters little whether or not points appear to be details or not; but, in the en'" semble of the problem are they really only details? I do not think I should linger on this particular question. There is another point upon which I would call your attention if you permit. Your san1e correspondent, J. Robert Carroll, takes it for granted that between the theories of Dam J. Jeannin on Gre.. gorian rhythm and those generally taught in our time, there is no mean level; if one does not adopt the first, he must necessarily choose the latter. Can this be true? Perhaps your correspondent does not know that there exist also other hypotheses which take place between the two theories mentioned, and which are positively different from both. It is true that this is generally little known and it is particularly the case of one of them about \vhich I would like to write to you. I refer to the concept of Gregorian rhythm brought forth by l"abbe Joseph V os, a Belgian musicologist of the Diocese of Liege, who devoted almost fifty years to this question. He died in 1945 'without having the opportunity to complete his work. He willed me all his manuscripts, asking me to revise them. I anl now en" gaged in this work. I have already published a few sketches on this , subject in specialized reviews. The last of these studies to date appeared in the Acta Musicologica, vol. XXVIII, fase." IX, 1956, 275 under the title 44The Problem of Gregorian Rhythm." I could hardly give the details of these studies; I will only say that l'abbe Vas unhesitatingly takes a place among the mensuralists, separating himself, however, from the concepts of Dom Jeannin, which he deems to be too much of a simplification. In order not to leave the reader in doubt, I join to my letter a small example of this theory. Of course, such musical translation should be verified in the manuscripts, which I did not do as yet; but, it seems to me that there will be little need for serious changes. This melody is neither more nor less interesting than many others, and I could send you a larger nUlnber of samples. I send you this particular chant because it is the most recent upon which I have worked. The ending reminds one of a kind of cadence which I have met in other places of the Gregorian repertoire. It is 276 rather a solemn conclusion of a piece of the sixth mode. No\.v a few short remarks on the structure of the melody and first on its notation.

Each ode is connected traditionally with a scriptural canticle (see below for the nine scriptural canticles) and consists of an Irmos, a variable number of troparia and, on feasts, a katavasia. After the Third Ode a sidalen is usually sung, and after the Sixth Ode a kontakion and ikos, and after the Ninth Ode, the Svitelen is sung. The Canon has its own system of eight tones. Domatikon A theotokion sung after “Now…” (or “Glory… Now…”) at the end of Psalms 140, 141, 129, and 116 at Vespers on Friday and Saturday evenings, and on the eve of a Polyeleos saint or saints with a vigil in the same tone as the last sticheron of the saint (at “Glory…”).

Worobec On 8 November 1885, the feast day of Archangel Michael, the Abbess Taisiia had a mystical experience in the midst of a church service dedicated to the tonsuring of sisters at Leushino. The women’s religious community of Leushino had recently been ele­ vated to the status of a monastery.1 Conducting an all-women’s choir on that special day, the abbess became exhilarated by the beautiful refrain of the Cherubikon hymn, “Let us lay aside all earthly cares,” and envisioned Christ surrounded by angels above the iconostasis. She later wrote, “Something was happening, but what it was I am unable to tell, although I saw and heard every­ thing. It was not something of this world. From the beginning of the vision, I seemed to fall into ecstatic rapture Tears were stream­ ing down my face. I realized that everyone was looking at me in astonishment, and even fear....”2 Five years later, a newspaper columnistwitnessedasceneinachurch in the Smolensk village of Egor'-Bunakovo in which a woman began to scream in the midst of the singing of the Cherubikon.     The Holy See POPE JOHN PAUL II GENERAL AUDIENCE Wednesday, 5 November 1997 We can count on Mary’s intercession 1. Down the centuries Marian devotion has enjoyed an interrupted development. In addition to the traditional liturgical feasts dedicated to the Lord’s Mother, there has been a flowering of countless expressions of piety, often approved and encouraged by the Church’s Magisterium. Many Marian devotions and prayers are an extension of the liturgy itself and have sometimes contributed to its overall enrichment, as is the case with the Office in honour of the Blessed Virgin and other pious compositions which have become part of the Breviary. The first known Marian invocation goes back to the third century and begins with the words: "We fly to thy patronage (Sub tuum praesidium), O holy Mother of God...". However, since the 14th century the most common prayer among Christians has been the "Hail Mary". By repeating the first words the angel addressed to Mary, it leads the faithful to contemplate the mystery of the Incarnation. The Latin word "Ave" translates the Greek word "Chaire": it is an invitation to joy and could be translated "Rejoice". The Eastern hymn "Akathistos" repeatedly stresses this "rejoice". In the "Hail Mary" the Blessed Virgin is called "full of grace" and is thus recognized for the perfection and beauty of her soul. The phrase "The Lord is with thee" reveals God’s special personal relationship with Mary, which fits into the great plan for his covenant with all humanity. Next, the statement "Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus" expresses the fulfilment of the divine plan in the Daughter of Zion’s virginal body.

    99 NAPLES IN FLESH AND BONES: RIBERA’S DRUNKEN SILENUS AND SAINT JEROME Edward Payne Abstract Jusepe de Ribera did not begin to sign his paintings consistently until 1626, the year in which he executed two monumental works: the Drunken Silenus and Saint Jerome and the Angel of Judgement (Museo di Capodimonte, Naples). Both paintings include elaborate Latin inscriptions stating that they were executed in Naples, the city in which the artist had resided for the past decade and where he ultimately remained for the rest of his life. Taking each in turn, this essay explores the nature and implications of these inscriptions, and offers new interpretations of the paintings. I argue that these complex representations of mythological and religious subjects – that were destined, respectively, for a private collection and a Neapolitan church – may be read as incarnations of the city of Naples. Naming the paintings’ place of production and the artist’s city of residence in the signature formulae was thus not coincidental or marginal, but rather indicative of Ribera inscribing himself textually, pictorially and corporeally in the fabric of the city. Kolyada “The Genre System of Early Russian Hymnography: the Main Stages and Principles of Its Formation”.1 On the one hand the Glossary is an integral part of the article, therefore revealing and corroborating its principal conceptual propositions. However, on the other hand it can be used as an independent reference resource for hymnographical terminology, useful for the majority of Orthodox Churches worldwide that follow the Eastern Rite: Byzantine, Russian, Bulgarian, Serbian et al., as well as those Western Orthodox dioceses and parishes, where worship is conducted in English. The Glossary includes the main corpus of chants that represents the five great branches of the genealogical tree of the genre system of early Christian hymnography, together with their many offshoots. These branches are 1) psalms and derivative genres; 2) sticheron-troparion genres; 3) akathistos; 4) canon; 5) prayer genres (see the relevant tables, p. 298-299).2 Each entry includes information about the etymology of the term, a short definition, typological features and a basic statement about the place of a particular chant in the daily and yearly cycles of services in the Byzantine rite.3 All this may help anyone who is involved in the worship or is simply interested in Orthodox liturgiology to understand more fully specific chanting material, as well as the general hymnographic repertoire of each service.

No need to specify which Mass: there was only one, the Mass that has been handed down through the centuries, by faithful Bishops to their successors, the priests whom they themselves ordained to say it. When I was about 12 years old, I remember walking, with my younger sister and her friend, along a railroad track into the next town to attend Mass on the first Friday of the month. My parents had sent me to supervise the group at a summer camp, and there was no Church in the area. So three of us set out early in the morning on a beautiful summer day to go to Mass and receive Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. The area was new to us, we probably did not walk fast enough - for whatever reason - Mass was just finishing as we arrived.
