  • Bring Flowers of the Rarest…… Creating a May Altar in Your Home
Bring flowers of the rarest…… Creating a May Altar in your Home Many people create a small altar in their home during the month of May. The altar is traditionally dedicated to Mary, the mother of God as May is the Marian month when Catholics give special praise and honour to Jesus’ mother Mary, gifted to us as our mother too. May is also the first month of summer, so it comes to pass that altars which are created during this time are adorned with flowers that bloom at this time of year and with particular prayers, or itemsof devotion such as rosary beads to decorate this special space and to express our love and honour to Mary. Here are a couple of steps that you and your family can follow when preparing to have a May Altar in your home….. 1: Plan a nature walk Decide upon a place to go for a walk together. On your nature walk, try to locate some of the following traditional flowers that have been used for May altars over the generations. It is good to choose wildflowers, if you can, which are far better for the environment. Cut commercial flowers can sometimes come with a big carbon footprint, which Pope Francis encourages us to try to reduce. Some flowers you might like to look for on your nature walk might include.... □ Wildflowers □ Buttercups □ Primroses □ Daffodils □ Wild bluebells □ Cowslips □ Lilac 2: Pick the location for the May Altar in your home Try and involve all members of the household in the decision-making about where your family May Altar will be placed.

Saturday, February 13 2021 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday, February 14, 2021 MEMORARE STANDING Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. The Introductory Rites ENTRANCE ANTIPHON Psalm 30: 3-4 Be my protector, O God, a mighty stronghold to save me. For you are my rock, my stronghold! Lead me, guide me, for the sake of your name. Priest: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Assembly: Amen. Priest: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Assembly: And with your spirit. Priest: Brethren (brothers and sisters), let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. Assembly: I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, And, striking their breast, they say: through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

  • R.E. Prayer Requirement Guidelines
R.E. Prayer Requirement Guidelines This year in the Religious Education Program we are re-instituting Prayer Requirements for each grade level. Please review the prayers required to be memorized, recited from text, \understood, or experienced for the grade that you are teaching (see p. 1) Each week, please take some class time to work on these prayers so that the R.E. students are able not only to recite the prayers but also to understand what they are saying and/or reading. The Student Sheet (p. 2) will need to be copied for each of your students, the student’s name placed on the sheet, and grid completed for each of the prayers they are expected to know, or understand, or recite from text, or experience. You may wish to assign the Assistant Catechist or High School Assistant to work, individually, with the students in order to assess their progress. We will be communicating these prayer requirements to the parents of your students, and later in the year, each student will take their sheet home for their parents to review their progress. We appreciate your assistance in teaching our youth to know their prayers and to pray often to Jesus… to adore God, to thank God, to ask God’s pardon, to ask God’s help in all things, to pray for all people. Remind your students that God always hears our prayers, but He does not always give us what we ask for because we do not always know what is best for others or ourselves. “Prayer is the desire and attempt to communicate with God.” Remember, no prayer is left unanswered! • Praying with Mary
PRAYING WITH MARY MY PRAYER I Started Praying with Mary and This is What Happened by SARAH MCMAHON For a long time, I faked having a relationship with Mary. Even after I had a relationship with God, and leadership roles at my parish I just didn’t give it much thought. I didn’t even know how to correctly say the rosary until I did summer missions in college. So many women in my life told me about their incredible devotion to Our Lady and I just didn’t get it. I thought maybe Mary picked favorites. That some people could have a relationship with her, and some people just didn’t make the cut. I figured I would just keep praying the same way I always had and if Mary wanted to pick me, she would. I did the consecration to Jesus through Mary for the first time my sophomore year of college. Even then, nothing really seemed to click for me. I posted a photo at the end of it that made me look super cool and Marian grace filled but in reality, I didn’t feel like anything had changed. My roommate had an incredible relationship with Mary and that added to the mystery surrounding Our Blessed Mother for me. I wanted the relationship my roommate had but had no idea how to get there. After many rosaries, consecrations, and discussions, it ended up just being the Holy Spirit that led me to Mary. Go figure. I was in the chapel after a particularly frustrating few months in my relationship with the Lord.

  • The Holy See
The Holy See POPE JOHN PAUL II GENERAL AUDIENCE Wednesday, 5 November 1997 We can count on Mary’s intercession 1. Down the centuries Marian devotion has enjoyed an interrupted development. In addition to the traditional liturgical feasts dedicated to the Lord’s Mother, there has been a flowering of countless expressions of piety, often approved and encouraged by the Church’s Magisterium. Many Marian devotions and prayers are an extension of the liturgy itself and have sometimes contributed to its overall enrichment, as is the case with the Office in honour of the Blessed Virgin and other pious compositions which have become part of the Breviary. The first known Marian invocation goes back to the third century and begins with the words: "We fly to thy patronage (Sub tuum praesidium), O holy Mother of God...". However, since the 14th century the most common prayer among Christians has been the "Hail Mary". By repeating the first words the angel addressed to Mary, it leads the faithful to contemplate the mystery of the Incarnation. The Latin word "Ave" translates the Greek word "Chaire": it is an invitation to joy and could be translated "Rejoice". The Eastern hymn "Akathistos" repeatedly stresses this "rejoice". In the "Hail Mary" the Blessed Virgin is called "full of grace" and is thus recognized for the perfection and beauty of her soul. The phrase "The Lord is with thee" reveals God’s special personal relationship with Mary, which fits into the great plan for his covenant with all humanity. Next, the statement "Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus" expresses the fulfilment of the divine plan in the Daughter of Zion’s virginal body.

  • Ave Maris Stella Hans Sachs Und Maria Im Spannungsfeld Von Tradition, Innovation Und Reformation

  • Matthew 20:17-28 Then the Mother of James and John Came with Her
Matthew 20:17-28 Then the mother of James and John came with her sons to make a request of Jesus, and bowed low; and he said to her, ‘What is it you want?’ She said to him, ‘Promise that these two sons of mine may sit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your kingdom.’ ‘You do not know what you are asking’ Jesus answered. ‘Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?’ They replied, ‘We can.’ ‘Very well,’ he said ‘you shall drink my cup, but as for seats at my right hand and my left, these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been allotted by my Father.’ When the other ten heard this, they were indignant with the two brothers. You may be tempted to accuse James and John of vain ambition, especially since the other Apostles were indignant, but I believe, with St. John Henry Cardinal Newman that this was not vain ambition, rather Noble Ambition, Magnanimity, the virtue to desire and do great things for the love of God and souls. 2 They asked to reign with Christ. He in answer told them: • Not that they were guaranteed of it • But that they must venture for it, strive after it St Jerome says, “Jesus said not, ‘You shall not sit there,’ that He might not discourage the two brothers; neither did He say, ‘You shall sit there,’ that He might not stir the others to anger; but by holding up the prize before all, He might encourage all to strive for Him.

  • Ave Maris Stella” (1610)
“In the Flesh as Well as in Spirit”1: (Meta) Physical Embodiment in Monteverdi’s setting of “Ave Maris Stella” (1610) Gordon Haramaki San José State University In 1610 Monteverdi published his setting of the plainchant hymn, “Ave maris stella” as part of his massive Vespro della Beata Vergine. Based on the thirteenth-century hymn used for vespers on the feast days of the Virgin Mary and of other female saints, the words are in seven litany-like verses that open with praise for the Virgin Mary, implore for intercession in the central verses, and end with a doxological commendation of the Trinity (ex. 1 and 2). Example 1. Monteverdi’s version of the plainchant “Ave maris stella” Example 2.
