On February 2, Jesus is 40 days old and leaves Bethlehem with His Mother and foster-father to go to the Temple. Thus, this is the traditional conclusion of the Christmas season because the Holy Fam- ily no longer rests in Bethlehem. Jesus and Mary have no need to fulfill the Law for, being sinless, they are not subject to it. Our Lady has no need for purification since her conception of Jesus and giving Him birth were wholly miraculous and divine. Jesus has no need to be redeemed by two turtle doves or two small pigeons; He is the Author of the Law and the Redeemer of the world. His Blood will more than suffice to redeem all those born of women! With great humility, Jesus and Mary fulfill the Law in order to give us the example of obedience to God in all things and in order to free us from the same Law. Our Lord is received in the Temple by the expectant faith of St. Simeon and St. Anna the Prophetess. He is proclaimed by Simeon as the "Light" of the nations. He illumines the Temple and the world with His Divine and Saving Light, which permeates His Sacred Humanity. Therefore, February 2 is a festival of light: candles are blessed and carried in solemn procession and the day is even called "Candlemas!" As we conclude our Christmas devotion on Thursday, let us make sure that we receive the Light into our hearts. Let us make sure to follow the example of Simeon and Anna in receiving Him. Our Christmas will be fruitful only if we con- tinue to carry the Light of the World within us through grace!     Second Sunday of Advent December 6, 2020 PASTORAL PLAN FOR WORSHIP ST. JOAN OF ARC CHURCH The dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass, issued by Bishop da Cunha, remains in effect until further notice. Those who are most vulnerable and at a greater risk due to age, preexisting health conditions, or in close proximity to vulnerable people are encouraged to remain home at this time. If you or a close loved one show symptoms of illness, please refrain from coming to church. The weekend Mass schedule here at St. Joan of Arc Church remains unchanged… Saturday at 5:00pm, Sunday at 8:00am and 10:00am. During the week Mass is celebrated Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:00am. Per state regulations, gatherings cannot exceed 40% of a house of worship’s occupancy capacity. Taking into account social distancing of 6 feet between people or households, means only approximately 3 people in every other pew. All worshippers enter the church through the Main Entrance. For safety and order, a person will not be able to choose a specific seat. A specially trained group of greeters will assist people to their seats. Once we reach our occupancy limit, we will not be able to admit others. Charity, cooperation and understanding are asked of all. Everyone entering the church is required to wear a mask or other face covering. Please provide your own masks. While there is hand sanitizer available in the foyer, please consider providing your own, if you can, as supply is limited. There are receptacles at the entrance of the church in which you may place your contribution to the parish as you enter.

    JANUARY MESSAGE FROM FR. PAUL LANDOLFI This month, we reflect on our founder, Adele ( Mother Mary of the Incarnation), and Therese de Lamourous. They were key players in the Sodality of Bordeaux, Blessed Fr. Chaminade's work of predilection. They were partners in the origins of the Marianist Family. I am finding that these lives of our “saints” blend together. Isn’t this the way it works for all of us? Saints make saints. The Marianist Family produces saints because its members are trying to become saints. Mary Immaculate was their original inspiration. She still is that for us today. Many of the Marianist religious and lay communities still renew their consecration to Mary around this feast. The offering this month was the homily for the Sodality of the Immaculate Conception's celebration this year. Once again after many years it was held in the chapel at Chaminade High School, Mineola, N.Y., where the group came together on Dec. 28, 1958, more than 50 years ago. We have some good news to share. While I attended a meeting in St. Louis, I was able to telephone Rachel Lozano. We celebrated this year, her 10th anniversary since she heard the news that she had cancer. It will be nine years in May that there is no sign of cancer. She attributes this to the intercession of our Founder. May God be glorified! Let us redouble our prayers that the cause of Blessed Fr. Chaminade will continue to move forward in Rome. We await God’s “fullness of time.” We have also heard that the Province of France has introduced the cause of Fr.

    Marian Calendar July 1 - Dedication of the Church of Jumieges, Normandy, France (1067) The Benedictine abbey of Jumieges in Normandy has an ancient and remarkable history. Founded in the year 654 by Saint Philibert, it was once one of the magnificent Benedictine monasteries in France, and the home of some 700 monks with over twice that number of lay brothers. Sadly, it is now nothing more than a tourist attraction, and the vestiges of the surviving structures, though vacant, scarred, and exposed to the elements, are celebrated as a magnificent example of Romanesque art. All that remains standing today are the church of Notre Dame with its impressive twin towers soaring to a height of 150 feet, the western façade, and sections of what were once the cloisters and library. The rest is but a pile of rubble, though it is proudly proclaimed the largest medieval ruin in France. 2 - Feast of the Visitation of Our Lady, instituted in 1385 by Pope Urban IV Mary’s first thought after the Archangel’s visit was to hasten to the little city of Ain Kharin and congratulate her cousin Elizabeth on the wonderful event about to take place. As Mary hastened along, those who met her little realized that she bore the Son of God – outwardly humble, sweet, and gracious to all. So the little girl from Nazareth passed unobserved upon her way. But as she raised her voice in loving salutation to Elizabeth, when entering the house, a marvelous thing happened, for the unborn infant in Elizabeth’s womb leaped for joy as he heard the voice of God’s Mother sounding in his ears.

As we heard from Bishop Vaughan earlier in this convention, Pope John Paul II's travels took him to capital Marian shrines in Poland, Ireland and Mex­ ico, among other places. It was the lOOth anniversary of the appearance of our Lady at Knock in County Mayo, Ireland, and the centenary also of the death of St. Bernadette of Lourdes. The international ecumenical conference held in England late September and early October began at London, continued at Oxford, but ended at the pre-Reformation shrine of Our Lady of Caversham, with Father Alfred Boeddeker, O.F.M., of San Francisco, as the final speaker.

From the beginnings of human history, people have designated particular locations as sacred and traveled to them in a pilgrimage. When Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire in 314 CE, Christian shrines emerged very soon at martyrs’ tombs and other places of historical importance in development of this religion. The distribution of physical relics created many of the Christian shrines in Western Europe. Popular belief concerning Mary began to evolve upon Jesus’ death; and in turn, most of these beliefs were adopted into Roman Catholic doctrine and became Mariology or Marianism, the veneration of Mary. In Western Europe, a number of shrines were created from an apparition of Mary to local people, and with any shrine’s approval by the institutional Church, it gained an international reputation and following; shrines not granted this approval by the Church have remained less internationally well-known and mostly locally based.
