These concepts and bases are arranged tinder several topics in the following manner: 1) The Problem and Its Importance 2) The Changing American Character 3) Patterns of Conformity in American Character *0 Play as a Vital Part of Civilization 5) Cultural Definitions of Work and Play 6) Women's Increasing Participation in Sports THE PROBLEM AND ITS IMPORTANCE Sports, as a whole, have not been studied to any great extent in their relationship to the American social structure. The implications of sports participation for women in modem society have been almost completely overlooked. It is the purpose of this study to determine the influence of sports on the lives of American people and, in turn, the influence of American people on sports. Particular reference will be made to these discoveries as they pertain to women living in the contemporary framework of modem American society. 2 In order to study this matter, the subject must be investigated broadly as well as deeply. Some physical educators avoid the social implications of their activities and take a rather unrealistic approach to their problems. The sports writer exploits, or uses for human interest, any aspect of sports that he can summon. The psychologist refers to sports only briefly as a minor ingredient in the complicated structure of social influences. One might ask why there has been so much peripheral investi­ gation, with no truly thorough approach to the subject of sports. If sports are of interest to so many groups, are they not worthy of more thorough investigation? Sports are a vital interest to the historian, the psychiatrist, and the anthropologist. The professional athlete pursues his activities because he has no choice in the matter, either because of his indomitable will to compete or his need for making a living, or both. The spectator public continues to witness contests in large numbers for as many psychological and materialistic reasons, perhaps, as there are persons who attend these spectacles. As a leading sociologist has stated, "A social science of play is needed in America. Without its contributions the ways in which we spend our leisure may never be ennobled."! ^Gregory P. Stone, "American Sports: Play and Dis-Play," / Chicago Review. IX (Fall, 1955)* 100. 3 The motives of the American people for participating or not participating in a sport, and how they participate, give an indication of the national character. American skiing, for instance, is as different from St. Moritz skiing as Coney Island is different from Cannes. "Sports," say Cozens and Stumpf, "are one index of the national genius and character of the American people."2 Today there is little knowledge of the feminine player. It is hoped that from this study there will emerge reasons which may help in understanding the American feminine character

    Alan Moore’s Miracleman: Harbinger of the Modern Age of Comics Jeremy Larance Introduction On May 26, 2014, Marvel Comics ran a full-page advertisement in the New York Times for Alan Moore’s Miracleman, Book One: A Dream of Flying, calling the work “the series that redefined comics… in print for the first time in over 20 years.” Such an ad, particularly one of this size, is a rare move for the comic book industry in general but one especially rare for a graphic novel consisting primarily of just four comic books originally published over thirty years before- hand. Of course, it helps that the series’ author is a profitable lumi- nary such as Moore, but the advertisement inexplicably makes no reference to Moore at all. Instead, Marvel uses a blurb from Time to establish the reputation of its “new” re-release: “A must-read for scholars of the genre, and of the comic book medium as a whole.” That line came from an article written by Graeme McMillan, but it is worth noting that McMillan’s full quote from the original article begins with a specific reference to Moore: “[Miracleman] represents, thanks to an erratic publishing schedule that both predated and fol- lowed Moore’s own Watchmen, Moore’s simultaneous first and last words on ‘realism’ in superhero comics—something that makes it a must-read for scholars of the genre, and of the comic book medium as a whole.” Marvel’s excerpt, in other words, leaves out the very thing that McMillan claims is the most important aspect of Miracle- man’s critical reputation as a “missing link” in the study of Moore’s influence on the superhero genre and on the “medium as a whole.” To be fair to Marvel, for reasons that will be explained below, Moore refused to have his name associated with the Miracleman reprints, so the company was legally obligated to leave his name off of all advertisements.

She competed in both the long jump and the 4 x 100 meter relay in the 1956 Olympics, where she won the bronze medal in the latter. In 1958, she became the first American woman to long-jump 20 feet. She was a member of several of TSU’s national champion relay teams. Matthews was born in 1935 in Griffin, Georgia. She attended David T. Howard High School, which produced several other world-class athletes (including high-jumper Mildred McDaniel Singleton); a gym teacher at Howard, Marion Armstrong-Perkins (Morgan), encouraged her to participate in sports.i After Matthews’s graduation from high school, she first attended Bethune Cookman College, and she then competed for the Chicago Catholic Youth Organization before she enrolled at TSU. Matthews was known for pushing her teammates in practice: Wilma Rudolph said, “Margaret would openly challenge anybody on the track. Every day. You'd think 'My God, I have to feel this every day?'”ii As a Tigerbelle, Matthews won the AAU outdoor long jump title four years in a row (from 1956 to 1959) and the 100 meter outdoor title once (in 1958)iii. Although she set an American record of 19 feet, 9.25 inches in the long jump at the 1956 Olympic Trialsiv, the Olympic Games did not go well for her: she fouled on her first two attempts and jumped far short of her best on the third jump, so she did not qualify for the finalsv.
