INTRODUCTORY ESSAY "DESTROYER OF WORLDS": THE MAKING OF AN ATOMIC BOMB At 5:29 a.m. (MST), the world’s first atomic bomb detonated in the New Mexican desert, releasing a level of destructive power unknown in the existence of humanity. Emitting as much energy as 21,000 tons of TNT and creating a fireball that measured roughly 2,000 feet in diameter, the first successful test of an atomic bomb, known as the Trinity Test, forever changed the history of the world. The road to Trinity may have begun before the start of World War II, but the war brought the creation of atomic weaponry to fruition. The harnessing of atomic energy may have come as a result of World War II, but it also helped bring the conflict to an end. This policy transition was controversial, causing friction with U.S. allies, with the nuclear power industry, and with Congress. Early in his presidential campaign, Carter criticized the excessive federal financial commitment to developing plutonium-based reactors and adopted the view that the weapons proliferation risks of plutonium economy technologies were serious and needed to be addressed. -

Schade, Ph.D. ii Abstract In my dissertation “Atomic Apocalypse – ‘Nuclear Fiction’ in German Literature and Culture,” I investigate the portrayal of the nuclear age and its most dreaded fantasy, the nuclear apocalypse, in German fictionalizations and cultural writings. My selection contains texts of disparate natures and provenance: about fifty plays, novels, audio plays, treatises, narratives, films from 1946 to 2009. I regard these texts as a genre of their own and attempt a description of the various elements that tie them together. The fascination with the end of the world that high and popular culture have developed after 9/11 partially originated from the tradition of nuclear fiction since 1945. The Cold War has produced strong and lasting apocalyptic images in German culture that reject the traditional biblical apocalypse and that draw up a new worldview. In particular, German nuclear fiction sees the atomic apocalypse as another step towards the technical facilitation of genocide, preceded by the Jewish Holocaust with its gas chambers and ovens. -

Universitätsarchiv Jena Bestand N Bestandsinformation Institutionsgeschichte Mit beginnendem 19. Jahrhundert war die Philosophische Fakultät den Anforderungen, die die Wissenschaftsentwicklung an die Naturwissenschaften stellte, nicht mehr gewachsen. Im Juli 1924 faßte die Fakultät mit Mehrheit den Teilungsbeschluß, der auch mehrheitlich vom Senat unterstützt wurde. Am 5. September 1924 genehmigte die Landesregierung die Gründung der Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät zum 1.April 1925. Lt. Satzung vom 24. Januar 1927 gehörte zu ihrer Aufgabe, die mathematischen, naturwissenschaftlichen und landwirtschaftlichen Fächer, die Geographie und die Psychologie zu lehren und zu fördern. Sie hatte das Recht, die Würde eines Doktors der Naturwissenschaften (Dr. phil. nat., ab 1931 Dr. rer. nat.) zu verleihen. Mit der 3. Hochschulreform 1968 wurde die Fakultät aufgelöst.
