The castle was built on a cliff along the Chikuma River. The castle became known all over Japan after the Sanada clan defeated the formidable Tokugawa army twice. For the first battle, a small force of 2000 Sanada soldiers fought an enormous 8000-strong Tokugawa army and defeated the Tokugawa in 1585. In the second battle, in 1600, the Sanada again defeated the much bigger Tokugawa army. In the Battle of Sekigahara (1600), the biggest inland battle in Japanese history, the Tokugawa fought against the Toyotomi fiercely.

    Shiba Ryôtarô Bettina Sachau (Hamburg) 1. Biographie Shiba Ryôtarô ist der Schriftstellername für Fukuda Sadaichi. Er legte sich dieses Pseudonym aus Bewunderung für den berühmten chinesischen Geschichtsschrei- ber Ssu-ma Ch'ien (jap. Shiba Sen)1 zu, als er – zusammen mit Chin Shunshin2 – an der Fremdsprachenschule in Ôsaka studierte. Shiba wurde am 7. August 1923 in Ôsaka als zweiter Sohn eines Pharmazeu- ten geboren. Schon seit seinem fünften Grundschuljahr interessierte er sich für frühe japanische Geschichte und archäologische Ausgrabungen, besonders als er, aus gesundheitlichen Gründen, längere Zeit bei seinem Großvater mütterlicher- seits in der Yamato-Landschaft, am Fuß des Futagami-Berges, lebte, Fundstücke sammelte und sich in das Werk Kôkogaku zadankai („Archäologische Gesprä- che“)3 vertiefte. Von seinem sechsten Grundschuljahr ab las er auch gern Literatur und schrieb, ohne Anleitung oder Vorbilder, kurze Erzählungen, nur eben, wie er rückblickend sagte, „in der Absicht, mein erster Leser zu werden“.4 Dadurch schienen allerdings seine Leistungen in der Schule gelitten zu haben, denn er be- stand die Eintrittsprüfung zur Staatlichen Mittelschule nicht und mußte eine Pri- vatschule besuchen. – Von 1941 ab lernte er an der Fremdsprachenschule in Ôsaka Mongolisch. Er „liebte den Norden“, wie er später einmal über sich sagte. – 1943 wurde er, nach Abschluß seines Studiums, zum Militär eingezogen,5 kam als Soldat nach Mukden, besuchte dort die Armee-Panzerschule, gehörte dann dem .     DOI: 10.24384/000499 Japan's attitude towards the reconstruction of the past: A study of the historical accuracy of the ‘2016 Sekigahara Battle Festival’ Reenactment Vitas Serafinas, Oxford Brookes University Abstract This paper discusses the 2016 Sekigahara Festival Reenactment battle and analyses its historical accuracy. The annual reenactment sees dozens of people dress up in samurai armour and perform a choreographed performance following the events of the historical battle of Sekigahara, a decisive event in Japan's history that ended the Warring States period and unified the country for over 200 years. Before the analysis of the reenactment, there is some discussion regarding the Japanese government's policy of protecting cultural properties, the concept of Soft Power, the value of a country's cultural exports as a form of influence and Sekigahara's sister city relationship with Gettysburg as these various factors may have influenced the design of the reenactment. The paper analyses the reenactment battle in comparison to historical accounts, both modern and contemporary. The measurements of accuracy are the location, the deployment of troops, the course of events, the apparel, the weaponry and various forms of identification, such as banners and famous samurai accessories, with photographs of the reenactment being compared to a historical account from a first-hand witness and various modern academic studies of the battle by historians and epistemologists. The paper then compares the reenactment battle's historical accuracy with a number of examples from Japanese period films as they share similarities regarding thematic design and production and can provide insight into the decision of whether or not to embrace historical accuracy.

Rosenstone ABSTRACT : The main topic of the article is the role of public television, the NHK ( Nippon hǀsǀ ky ǀkai , Japan Broadcasting Corporation ), takes in shaping the collective memory in contemporary Japan. The NHK, as a public institution, modelled on the British BBC, conducts a so-called “public mission”, meaning their active and creative participation in shaping social and civil attitudes as well as personality models amongst the Japanese. One of the ways in which the NHK carries out its mission is taiga dorama (“Big River Drama”), the NHK’s flagship productions released yearly since 1963. The creators of these year-long TV series design great national epics recounting historic events and portraying famous historical figures. “Big River Dramas” do not only retell historical events, but also rekindle the interest of the Japanese in their own history and culture. As the carriers of collective memory, they contribute to developing its three elements: cognitive (propagating historical knowledge amongst the society), emotional (creating certain attitudes towards history) and behavioural (developing national tourism).
