    Genealogy of Anthony Gale 1 The Genealogy of Anthony Gale Fourth Commandant of the US Marine Corps Richard J. McCunney [email protected] Version 3 2 May 2011 Genealogy of Anthony Gale 2 Introduction The Fourth Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, Lt. Col. Anthony Gale, had a star-crossed career. An Irish immigrant, he entered the newly formed Marines in 1798 as a Second Lieutenant. He “took an active and gallant part” in the defense of Ft. McHenry during the War of 1812 (Abbot, 1918, p. 79), worked his way up through the ranks, and was elevated to the position of Commandant on 3 March 1819. Personal behavior issues coupled with arcane political infighting led to his court-martial, conviction and removal from the service in October 1820 (Bartlett, 1985). Subsequently, he lived in poverty in rural Kentucky and died on 12 December 1842 (Millett, et al., 2004, p. 52) (Long, undated, p. 11) or 12 December 1843 (Bartlett, 1985) (United States Senate, 1844, p. 323). Previous efforts to establish an early biographical record for Lt. Col. Anthony Gale have been met with limited success. Recent research has uncovered new information, but the record remains incomplete. This paper presents a foundation of genealogical information concerning the Commandant and an analysis is performed in an attempt to fit the pieces together and “connect the dots” to tell a coherent story of his lineage. My personal interest in Commandant Anthony Gale stems from a family relationship. His sister, Frances [Gale] Kearney, is my great-great-great-great grandmother. My purpose in publishing this article is to assemble the growing body of sources concerning Commandant Gale into one place and to advance the dialog regarding his heritage.

    The Search for Platoon 1005 I We were all silent as the bus pulled up to the gate lit only by a few small spotlights. It was almost midnight, June 17,1966. A dozen or so of us had started out that morning from Philadelphia. We’d picked up a few more when we’d changed planes in Washington, D.C. And a few more when we’d arrived in Charleston, South Carolina, and transferred to the bus. Along the way, there’d been new friends made, strained camaraderie, talk of home and girlfriends and ambitions. But as the last miles of the journey rolled away beneath a shadowy arch of Spanish moss, the bus had carried each man ever deeper into his own thoughts. There was no conversation now, no sound but the mechanical grate and whine of the bus itself. Ner- vous anticipation-fear of the unknown-turned tongues wooden. I could see gold letters on a red brick wall illuminated by a spotlight: “Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina.” A uniformed guard waved the bus through. Soon it rolled up to the only lighted building on the sleeping base and stopped. A lone figure in a khaki uniform and dark brown Smokey the Bear hat strode through the glare of a spotlight shining down from the side of the building. The bus ‘THE SFARCH FOR PLATOON 100.5 driver opened the door, and the lone figure stepped onto the bus, causing the bus to list noticeably to the right. He was eight and a half feet tall.

PREFACE To Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War was essentially a people's contest over the maintenance of a government dedi- cated to the elevation of man and the right of every citizen to an unfettered start in the race of life. Kingsland, this letter of 18 November 1859 describes a visit to the slave pens in Richmond. The traveler had stopped there on the way to Charleston from Washington, D.C. He describes in particular the treatment of young African American girls at the slave pen. Accomack County, commissioner of revenue, personal property tax book, ca. 1840. 42 pp. Mss4AC2753a1. Contains a list of residents’ taxable property, including slaves by age groups, horses, cattle, clocks, watches, carriages, buggies, and gigs. Free African Americans are listed separately, and notes about age and occupation sometimes accompany the names. Adams family papers, 1698–1792. 222 items. Mss1Ad198a. Microfilm reels C001 and C321. Primarily the papers of Thomas Adams (1730–1788), merchant of Richmond, Va., and London, Eng. Section 15 contains a letter dated 14 January 1768 from John Mercer to his son James.
