  • Trip Report - Madeira 13-27 August 2003 by Magnus Unger
Trip report - Madeira 13-27 August 2003 By Magnus Unger Travel info I and my girlfriend booked our trip via the Swedish travel agency Fritidsresor. The first week we stayed at Hotel Luamar at the western part of Porto Santo and for the second week we had rented a car and stayed at Hotel Gorgulho in the western part of Funchal close to Lido. The car was a Volkswagen Polo with only 1.2 litre engine so most of the time I had to drive on gear 1-3, while the gear 4 and 5 was almost only used on the motorway between Ribeira Brava and Machico. The second week we drove 930 kilometres and fuelled the car with 77 litres, so despite the non-economic driving the car used less than one litre per 10 km. Day by day report 13 August The flight from Stockholm arrived at Madeira 13:00, then flight to Porto Santo. In the evening I took a walk up in the mountains west of Ponta towards Pico das Flores. Here at a 3-way crossing near the Miradouro das Flores I saw a couple of Rock Sparrows. 14 August A morning walk before breakfast to Ponta da Calheta where I saw the first Cory’s Shearwaters for the trip. After breakfast we walked to the centre and up to the Tanque pond where I found a Little Stint and a Gargany, probably the first for Madeira. In the afternoon relaxing and bathing in the sea. 15 August At Ponta da Calheta before breakfast I saw my first Fea’s/Zino’s Petrel although it was distant the black underwing showed well.

Tineidae, Acrolepiidae, Epermeniidae With 127 figures Reinhard Gaedike and Ole Karsholt Summary A review of three families Tineidae, Epermeniidae and Acrolepiidae in the Madeira Islands is given. Three new species: Monopis henderickxi sp. n. (Tineidae), Acrolepiopsis mauli sp. n. and A. infundibulosa sp. n. (Acrolepiidae) are described, and two new combinations in the Tineidae: Ceratobia oxymora (MEYRICK) comb. n. and Monopis barbarosi (KOÇAK) comb. n. are listed. Trichophaga robinsoni nom. n. is proposed as a replacement name for the preoccupied T. abrkptella (WOLLASTON, 1858). The first record from Madeira of the family Acrolepiidae (with Acrolepiopsis vesperella (ZELLER) and the two above mentioned new species) is presented, and three species of Tineidae: Stenoptinea yaneimarmorella (MILLIÈRE), Ceratobia oxymora (MEY RICK) and Trichophaga tapetgella (LINNAEUS) are reported as new to the fauna of Madeira. The Madeiran records given for Tsychoidesfilicivora (MEYRICK) are the first records of this species outside the British Isles. Tineapellionella LINNAEUS, Monopis laevigella (DENIS & SCHIFFERMULLER) and M. imella (HÜBNER) are dele ted from the list of Lepidoptera found in Madeira. All species and their genitalia are figured, and informa tion on bionomy is presented. l~Yoc. Indian Acad. Sci., Vol. 88 B, Part iI, Number 4, July 1979, pp. 277-281, @ printed in India. Morphological nature of floral cup in Lauraceae S PAL School of Plant Morphology, Meerut College, Meerut 250 001 MS received 19 June 1978 Abstract. On the basis of anatomical criteria the floral cup of Lauraceae can be regarded as appendicular, as the traces entering into the floral cup are morphologi- cally compound, differentiated into tepal and stamen traces at higher levels. The ontogenetic studies also support this contention. The term Perigynous hypanthium is retained for the floral cup of Lauraceae as it is formed as a result of intercalary growth occurring underneath the region of perianth and androecium. Keywords. Lauraceae; floral cup; morphological nature; appendicular; peri- gynous hypanthium. 1. Introduction The family Lauraceae has received comparatively little attention from earlier workers because of difficulty in procuring the material. So far very little work has been done on the floral anatomy of this family (Reece 1939 ; Sastri 1952 ; Pal 1974). There has been considerable difference of opinion regarding the nature of floral cup in angiosperms. The present work was initiated to study the morphological nature of the floral cup. 2. Materials and methods The present investigation embodies the results of observations on 21 species of the Lauraceae.
