Anne-Florence GILLARD-ESTRADA Oscar Wilde’s Aesthetics in the Making: The Reviews of the Grosvenor Gallery exhibitions of 1877 and 1879) This paper explores the first two texts Wilde published in 1877 and 1879 in Irish periodicals, which are reviews of the first and third exhibitions of the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877 and 1879. Wilde commented on the developments that had been affecting British painting for the past fifteen years or so. He addressed the works of artists who were then associated with the “classic” school of painting as well as with “Aestheticism”—which often overlapped. Moreover, he engaged in a dialogue with the reviewers and art critics who were favourable to such art. -

Modernist Vintages: The Significance of Wine in Wilde, Richardson, Joyce and Waugh by Laura Waugh A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved March 2013 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Mark Lussier, Chair Daniel Bivona Patrick Bixby ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2013 ABSTRACT “Modernist Vintages” considers the significance of wine in a selection of modernist texts that includes Oscar Wilde’s Salomé (1891), Dorothy Richardson’s Honeycomb (1917), James Joyce’s Ulysses (1922), and Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited: The Sacred and Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder (1945). The representations of wine in these fictions respond to the creative and destructive depictions of Wine that have imbued the narratives of myth, religion, and philosophy for thousands of years; simultaneously, these WorKs recreate and reflect on numerous Wine-related events and movements that shaped European discourse in the nineteenth and tWentieth centuries. The modernists use Wine’s conventional associations to diverse and innovative ends: as the playWright August Strindberg Writes, “NeW forms have not been found for the neW content, so that the neW Wine has burst the old bottles.” Wine in these works alternately, and often concurrently, evoKes themes that Were important to the modernists, including notions of indulgence and Waste, pleasure and addiction, experimentation and ritual, tradition and nostalgia, regional distinction and global expansion, wanton intoxication and artistic clarity. -

1 1881 CHARMIDES Oscar Wilde Wilde, Oscar (1854-1900) - An Irish-born English poet, novelist, and playwright. Considered an eccentric, he was the leader of the aesthetic movement that advocated “art for art’s sake” and was once imprisoned for two years with hard labor for homosexual practices. Charmides (1881) - Charmides, a Grecian boy, hides in the temple of Athena and lavishes his passion on a statue of the goddess. 2 Opening line: He was a Grecian lad, who coming home ... A Comparative Study of the Literary Output of Nikolai Gogol

Signed ___________________________________________________ 2 SUMMARY This thesis marks the first comprehensive comparative study of the literary output of Nikolai Gogol and Oscar Wilde, from an intersectional perspective blending genre theory, queer theory, postcolonial theory and Jungian psychoanalysis, to examine the authors as sexually and ethnically closeted while estimating the impact of this closeting on their fiction. The thesis concludes that Nikolai Gogol and Oscar Wilde have significant parallels in their conception of the artistic process, explicable by a shared exposure anxiety, significant stylistic parallels, explicable by a shared imperative to generate interpretative suspense and facilitate plausibly deniable self-expression, and significant thematic parallels in their treatment of sexuality, ethnicity and identity, explicable by a shared experience of sexual and ethnic closeting. By establishing that all major sexual themes in the fiction of Nikolai Gogol have direct parallels in the fiction of Oscar Wilde, this thesis contributes to the contextualization of Gogol as a closeted writer, while proposing new aesthetic frameworks for the evaluation of Oscar Wilde. 3 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I am grateful for the advice and encouragement of my supervisor, Dr Sarah Smyth, of the Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies of Trinity College Dublin, and my co-supervisor, Dr Paul Delaney of the School of English, and my two examiners Jarlath Killeen and Claire Whitehead. -

Not only does it signify the essentials of culture, but also it derails the elite aesthetic doctrines of the times by redefining the rules of the game of seeing and living. The epic proportions of beauty, its shambolic accounts, the perennial aesthetic philosophies, relentless battles on splendour, the voyeurisms, competitive politics behind the making and the matter of the beautiful, the handsomely growing beauty industry and the beauty in association with space and power offer food for interpretation and interrogation. The Singularities International Conference is anchoring on the theme of Beauty, to set the momentum that deconstructs the truth around beauty, in favour of truths that beauty entails. This is an extension of the academic culture that the journal set to make the scholars intellectually engaged, not simply through publishing papers, but by means of the dialogues and interactions the Singularities Conferences initiate.
