I raised my voice in free and open protest against a thousand years of injustice.” —Karl Heinrich Ulrichs after being shouted down for protesting anti-sodomy laws in Munich, 18671 Queer* history evokes the familiar American narrative of the Stonewall Uprising and gay liberation. Most people know that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people rose up, like other oppressed minorities in the sixties, with a never-before-seen outpouring of social activism, marches, and protests. Popular historical discourse has led the American public to believe that, before this point, queers were isolated, fractured, and impotent – relegated to the shadows. The postwar era typically is conceived of as the critical turning point during which queerness emerged in public dialogue. This account of queer history depends on a social category only recently invented and invested with political significance. However, Stonewall was not queer history’s first political milestone. Indeed, the modern LGBT movement is just the latest in a series of campaign periods that have spanned a century and a half. Queer activism dawned with a new lineage of sexual identifiers and an era of sexological exploration in the mid-nineteenth century. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com "Uranian" and "Uranianism" were early terms denoting homosexuality. They were in English use primarily from the 1890s through the first quarter of the 1900s and applied to concurrent and overlapping trends in sexology, social philosophy, and poetry, particularly in Britain. "Uranian" was a British derivation from "Urning," a word invented by German jurist Karl Heinrich Ulrichs in the 1860s. In a series of pamphlets Ulrichs proposed a scheme for classifying the varieties of sexual orientation, assuming their occurrence in natural science. He recognized three principal categories among males: "Dionings" (heterosexuals), "Urnings" (homosexuals), and "Uranodionings" (bisexuals), based on their preferences for sexual partners. (A fourth category, hermaphrodites, he acknowledged but dismissed as occurring too infrequently to be significant.) Ulrichs further subdivided Urnings into those who prefer effeminate males, masculine males, adolescent males, and a fourth category who repressed their natural yearnings and lived heterosexually. Anne-Florence GILLARD-ESTRADA Oscar Wilde’s Aesthetics in the Making: The Reviews of the Grosvenor Gallery exhibitions of 1877 and 1879) This paper explores the first two texts Wilde published in 1877 and 1879 in Irish periodicals, which are reviews of the first and third exhibitions of the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877 and 1879. Wilde commented on the developments that had been affecting British painting for the past fifteen years or so. He addressed the works of artists who were then associated with the “classic” school of painting as well as with “Aestheticism”—which often overlapped. Moreover, he engaged in a dialogue with the reviewers and art critics who were favourable to such art. -

RTVF 10 Group Project: Single-Shot Movie Production OBJECTIVES The purpose of this assignment is for you to work in small groups toward the goal of shooting a single-shot movie production. You will model your shot after any of three long takes (described below) in Annie Hall, The Graduate, and The Conversation, respectively, but beyond that you will decide as a group the cinematography (framing, mobile framing, etc.), mise-en-scène (setting, actors, lighting, blocking, costume/makeup, props, etc.), sound (dialogue/voice, diegetic/non-diegetic sounds, score, silent, etc.), narrative (characters, beginning and end of shot, narration, etc.), and the film’s genre/format (for instance, drama or non-fiction/documentary, horror or comedy, puppets or people, etc.). As a group you will have to come up with how best to take advantage of this long take, depending upon your purpose as filmmakers. You may wish to make your audience laugh or feel sympathy or sorrow; to challenge your audience with more experimental and artistic material; to teach or educate your audience on some issue; or even to advertise something. Again, you may work within any genre you choose, and the movie need not be fiction; music videos, ads, and documentaries are permitted. GUIDELINES You will begin by selecting which long take you wish to model your movie after. Consider why and how the long take is being used in the scene and the film and how you as a group would like to use it in your movie. Then, begin to formulate your movie. How will it look, where will it be set, what will be the plot, how will it narrate story information, who/what will be featured, how long will the shot last, and what movie format will it be (documentary, music video, drama, comedy, TV ad, etc.)? Try to come up with a situation, format, and staging/blocking and other film techniques that take advantage of the long take you choose to emulate. -

Modernist Vintages: The Significance of Wine in Wilde, Richardson, Joyce and Waugh by Laura Waugh A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved March 2013 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Mark Lussier, Chair Daniel Bivona Patrick Bixby ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2013 ABSTRACT “Modernist Vintages” considers the significance of wine in a selection of modernist texts that includes Oscar Wilde’s Salomé (1891), Dorothy Richardson’s Honeycomb (1917), James Joyce’s Ulysses (1922), and Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited: The Sacred and Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder (1945). The representations of wine in these fictions respond to the creative and destructive depictions of Wine that have imbued the narratives of myth, religion, and philosophy for thousands of years; simultaneously, these WorKs recreate and reflect on numerous Wine-related events and movements that shaped European discourse in the nineteenth and tWentieth centuries. The modernists use Wine’s conventional associations to diverse and innovative ends: as the playWright August Strindberg Writes, “NeW forms have not been found for the neW content, so that the neW Wine has burst the old bottles.” Wine in these works alternately, and often concurrently, evoKes themes that Were important to the modernists, including notions of indulgence and Waste, pleasure and addiction, experimentation and ritual, tradition and nostalgia, regional distinction and global expansion, wanton intoxication and artistic clarity. -
