She grew a community service project into the non-profit Just Yell Fire which has become a Million Girl Revolution across 45 countries. "YOUNG WONDER" - CNN As a 13 year old black belt martial artist, Dallas learned the frightening statistics that 1 in 4 girls will be sexually assaulted and that there are 114,000 attempted abductions each year in the United States alone. She set out to create a home movie to teach her schoolmates at Portland's St. Mary's Academy High School some street fighting techniques to defend themselves. The word spread that a young girl was putting together an important film and in sixty days Dallas had a volunteer professional crew of 30, 100 volunteer extras, celebrity cameos by Josh Holloway and Evangeline Lilly, and $600,000 in donated resources. Thus came about the 46 minute film, Just Yell Fire . It teaches girls how to literally fight back against predators and sexual assault. "IT'S ABOUT FIGHTING BACK" - Good Morning America Dallas put the film online for free download and raised the money to produce and ship free DVDs to girls without Internet access. The results? Nearly one million downloads in two years and multiple awards for the film including American Library Association Most Notable Video designation and Dallas was a Teen Choice Award nominee for her work.

  • LOST Fandom and Everyday Philosophy
"Accidental Intellectuals": LOST Fandom and Everyday Philosophy Author: Abigail Letak Persistent link: http://hdl.handle.net/2345/2615 This work is posted on eScholarship@BC, Boston College University Libraries. Boston College Electronic Thesis or Dissertation, 2012 Copyright is held by the author, with all rights reserved, unless otherwise noted. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! This thesis is dedicated to everyone who has ever been obsessed with a television show. Everyone who knows that adrenaline rush you get when you just can’t stop watching. Here’s to finding yourself laughing and crying along with the characters. But most importantly, here’s to shows that give us a break from the day-to-day milieu and allow us to think about the profound, important questions of life. May many shows give us this opportunity as Lost has. Acknowledgements First and foremost I would like to thank my parents, Steve and Jody, for their love and support as I pursued my area of interest. Without them, I would not find myself where I am now. I would like to thank my advisor, Juliet Schor, for her immense help and patience as I embarked on combining my personal interests with my academic pursuits. Her guidance in methodology, searching the literature, and general theory proved invaluable to the completion of my project. I would like to thank everyone else who has provided support for me throughout the process of this project—my friends, my professors, and the Presidential Scholars Program. I’d like to thank Professor Susan Michalczyk for her unending support and for believing in me even before I embarked on my four years at Boston College, and for being the one to initially point me in the direction of sociology.

  • 1 Paul Grainge Lost Logos: Channel 4 and the Branding of American Event
1 Paul Grainge Lost logos: Channel 4 and the branding of American event television In March 2007, the UK satellite television provider Sky unveiled a national media campaign carrying two banner statements: ‘Don’t Lose Lost’ and ‘Get Jack Back’. Appealing directly to the loyal audience of the imported American dramas Lost and 24 (Imagine Entertainment, 2001-) - both shown on Sky One having been poached from British terrestrial rivals Channel 4 and BBC 2 - the advertorial campaign was a defensive salvo in a dispute between Sky and Virgin Media over the latter’s decision to drop key Sky channels from its digital cable service. While cast in the business press as a struggle of will between corporate owners Rupert Murdoch and Richard Branson, the carriage dispute also revealed two different approaches to media marketing, Sky seeking leverage in the pay television market by enticing viewers through the acquisition of popular shows, Virgin Media seeking to emphasize the technological benefits of its cable package.1 The different priorities given to ‘content’ and ‘technology’ were duly emblazoned on the transit vans installing digital pay-television in British towns and cities. In a mobile public relations battle, Sky vehicles were adorned with characters from its flagship programmes (from the hapless face of Homer Simpson to the brooding cast of Lost) whilst Virgin’s fleet advertised broadband capacity as part of ‘the real deal’. Not for the first time, American television became linked to calculated branding strategies in the British media market, the whereabouts of the latest in ‘must-see’ viewing becoming, for Sky at least, both promotional tool and bargaining chip.

FinalProject 25/08/2018, 930 PM COGS108 Final Project Group Members: Yanyi Wang Ziwen Zeng Lingfei Lu Yuhan Wang Yuqing Deng Introduction and Background Movie revenue is one of the most important measure of good and bad movies. Revenue is also the most important and intuitionistic feedback to producers, directors and actors. Therefore it is worth for us to put effort on analyzing what factors correlate to revenue, so that producers, directors and actors know how to get higher revenue on next movie by focusing on most correlated factors. Our project focuses on anaylzing all kinds of factors that correlated to revenue, for example, genres, elements in the movie, popularity, release month, runtime, vote average, vote count on website and cast etc. After analysis, we can clearly know what are the crucial factors to a movie's revenue and our analysis can be used as a guide for people shooting movies who want to earn higher renveue for their next movie. They can focus on those most correlated factors, for example, shooting specific genre and hire some actors who have higher average revenue. Reasrch Question: Various factors blend together to create a high revenue for movie, but what are the most important aspect contribute to higher revenue? What aspects should people put more effort on and what factors should people focus on when they try to higher the revenue of a movie? http://localhost:8888/nbconvert/html/Desktop/MyProjects/Pr_085/FinalProject.ipynb?download=false Page 1 of 62 FinalProject 25/08/2018, 930 PM Hypothesis: We predict that the following factors contribute the most to movie revenue.
