The belief that music carries the power to unite all human beings, regardless of their nationality, political and religious convictions and social status has always guided my choices. I have therefore accepted with great enthusiasm the invitation to become Music Director of the Tsinandali Festival and I completely support its commitment to inspire a new generation of musicians selected across neighbouring countries to create the Pan-Caucasian Youth Orchestra. I am convinced all of us can influence the development of a better society, one based on values of respect, tolerance and understanding through initiatives like the Pan-Caucasian Youth Orchestra where these wonderful young people get the chance to live, work – and most importantly – listen to each other as they come together to make music. I am grateful to Avi and Martin for having invited me to take part in this exciting project. tsinandalifestival.ge TSINANDALI FESTIVAL 2019 1 გიორგი რამიშვილი სილქ როუდ ჯგუფის დამფუძნებელი და სამეთვალყურეო საბჭოს თავმჯდომარე George Ramishvili Founder and Chairman of Silk Road Group The Tsinandali Foundation is committed to investing in the bright and peaceful future of the talented young musicians of this region. Our vision for the Tsinandali Estate from day one, when Silk Road Group engaged with the project, was to establish a meaningful and sustainable cultural and educational center in Georgia. Our friends and partners joined the project with the same understanding. The importance of the Language of Music initiative cannot be underestimated, as music is the most powerful ambassador for peace, prosperity and for strengthening cultural and economic ties between Caucasian nations. It is my profound honour to be one of the founders of the Tsinandali Foundation and Festival. Rarely in life does one come across an opportunity this unique – a chance to help lay the foundations for the establishment of a centre for cultural exchange and the gathering of human and intellectual capital. United by music and a common understanding of the centrality of the arts, Tsinandali will be a place where people from all cultures – in particular young people – will participate in open exchanges in a dynamic and free environment and have a continuous journey of discovery. It is my hope that the dream of Tsinandali will be shared by countless visitors for many generations to come. We then travelled to Tsinandali and discovered the wonderful estate of Alexander Chavchavadze and were taken aback with the beauty of the region, the friendliness of the people and the possibilities we imagined. Meetings followed with the Prime Minister and four other ministers in order to understand the government’s proposed support for an international music festival in Tsinandali. Their vision and enthusiasm matched those of George’s so we knew that this was something we wanted to be part of. The concept we developed was for a fully-fledged music festival accompanied by an academy and the creation of the Pan-Caucasian Youth Orchestra. The creation of this youth orchestra for musicians aged between 18-28 was vital to us as the Caucasian region has historically been a melting pot for cultural exchange but also of long-lasting hostilities. By giving these players the chance to work together and learn from the best international musicians we are convinced this will bring better understanding of each other and create lasting friendships across the region and beyond. Establishing the Tsinandali Estate as a regional cultural centre is something we are very enthusiastic about and we hope that everyone, artists included, will become effective ambassadors for this wonderful and exciting new initiative. Mikheil Batiashvili The Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia Beautiful Tsinandali, which is a place of remarkable history and equally remarkable musical tradition, has now become a cradle of yet another important event. Tsinandali Festival is an ambitious project, exemplifying a synergy between the world’s prominent musicians, the private company and the Government. Especially gratifying is the fact that the educational programme embedded in the Festival provides the youth of the region with a unique opportunity for creative relationships with the highest rank music professionals as well as their peers. My strong belief is that the Tsinandali Festival will be evolving as an important tradition

  • Tbilisi As a Center of Crosscultural Interactions (The 19Th– Early 20Thcenturies)
Khazar Journal Of Humanities and Social Sciences Special Issue, 2018 ©Khazar University Press, 2018 DOI: 10.5782/kjhss.2018.233.252 Tbilisi as a Center of Crosscultural Interactions (The 19th– early 20thCenturies) Nino Chikovani Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Tbilisi, Georgia The city of Tbilisi – the capital of Georgia, during its long period of existence, has been an interesting place of meeting and interaction of different cultures. In this context, the present paper deals with one of the most interesting periods in the history of the city. From the beginning of the 19th century, when the establishment of the Russian imperial rule started in the Caucasus, Tbilisi became an official political center of the region; political and economic changes, occurring during the second half of the 19th century, significantly influenced ethnic and religious composition of Tbilisi, its cultural lifetime and mode of life in general. For centuries-long period, Tbilisi, like other big cities (how much big does not matter in this case), was not only the Georgian city in ethnic terms; but also, it represented a blend of different religious and ethnic groups. Not only in a distant past, but just a couple of decades ago, when the phenomenon of the so called ‘city yards’ (which are often called as ‘Italian yards’ and which have almost disappeared from the city landscape) still existed in Tbilisi, their residents spoke several languages fluently. Ethnically and religiously mixed families were not rare. Such type of cities, termed as Cosmo-policies by some researchers, has an ability to transform a visitor, at least temporarily, into a member of “in-group”, in our case – into Tbilisian.

  • Anthology of Georgian Poetry
ANTHOLOGY OF GEORGIAN POETRY Translated by VENERA URUSHADZE STATE PUBLISHING HOUSE «Soviet Georgia» Tbilisi 1958 PREFACE Nature and history have combined to make Georgia a land of poetry. Glistening peaks, majestic forests, sunny valleys, crystalline streams clamouring in deep gorges have a music of their own, which heard by the sensitive ear tends to breed poetic thought; while the incessant struggle of the Georgians against foreign invaders — Persians, Arabs, Mongols, Turks and others — has bred in them a sense of chivalry and a deep patriotism which found expression in many a lay, ballad and poem. Now the treasures of Georgian literature, both ancient and modern, are accessible to millions of our country's readers for they have been translated into many languages of the peoples of the Soviet Union. Except for the very few but beautiful translations of the Wardrops almost nothing has been translated from Georgian into English. The published works of Marjory Wardrop are — "Georgian Folk Tales", "The Hermit", a poem by Ilia Chavchavadze (included in this anthology), "Life of St. Nino", ''Wisdom and Lies" by Saba Sulkhan Orbeliani. But her chief work was the word by word translation of the great epic poem "The Knight in the Tiger's Skin" by Shota Rustaveli. Oliver Wardrop translated "Visramiani". Now, I have taken the responsibility upon myself to afford the English reader some of the treasures of Georgian poetry. This anthology, without pretending to be complete, aims at including the specimens of the varied poetry of the Georgian people from the beginning of its development till to-day. I shall not speak of the difficulties of translating into English from Georgian, even though it might serve as an excuse for some of my shortcomings.

  • Romantic Poetry 1 Romantic Poetry
Romantic poetry 1 Romantic poetry Romanticism, a philosophical, literary, artistic and cultural era[1] which began in the mid/late-18th century[2] as a reaction against the prevailing Enlightenment ideals of the day (Romantics favored more natural, emotional and personal artistic themes),[3][4] also influenced poetry. Inevitably, the characterization of a broad range of contemporaneous poets and poetry under the single unifying name can be viewed more as an exercise in historical The Funeral of Shelley by Louis Edouard Fournier (1889); the group members, from left compartmentalization than an attempt to right, are Trelawny, Hunt and Byron to capture the essence of the actual ‘movement’.[citation needed] Poets such as William Wordsworth were actively engaged in trying to create a new kind of poetry that emphasized intuition over reason and the pastoral over the urban, often eschewing consciously poetic language in an effort to use more colloquial language. Wordsworth himself in the Preface to his and Coleridge's Lyrical Ballads defined good poetry as “the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings,” though in the same sentence he goes on to clarify this statement by In Western cultural context romanticism substantially contibuted to the idea asserting that nonetheless any poem of of "how a real poet should look like". An idealized statue of a Czech poet value must still be composed by a man Karel Hynek Mácha (in Petřín Park, Prague) repesents him as a slim, tender “possessed of more than usual organic and perhaps unhealthy boy. However, anthropological examination proved sensibility [who has] also thought long that he was a man of a strong, robust and muscular body constitution.
