Volume 1, Issue 5 Fall 2016 The Fearless Pursuit to Activism: AYF Senior Seminar 2016 By Dickran Khodanian FRANKLIN, Mass. «Միացե՛ք Հայեր, Արցախն է մեզ կանչում»/ “Miyatsek Hayer, Artsakh-neh mez ganchoom”/ Come together Armenians, Artsakh is calling us. The Armenian Youth Federation held its annual senior seminar on the weekend of September 30-October 2 with over 80 attendees at Camp Haiastan. Due to the senior seminar last year and given the circumstances of Artsakh, the central theme of the weekend was based around Artsakh. After being present at the lectures and witnessing the dialogue discussed, the theme of the weekend could not have been more appropriate. Following the Four Day War that took the lives of over a hundred soldiers, the entire global community of Armenians were united in support of Artsakh and were ready to be of any type of assistance to their brothers and sisters in the homeland. This senior seminar became an opportunity for the AYF to inform and educate its membership on the current issues Artsakh and Armenia face in order to stimulate the conversation of how we as young Armenian diasporans could be of service to our homeland. The seminar began with a lecture by a great mentor and Editor of Asbarez News Ara Khachatourian on the historical perspective of Artsakh as well as its relevance to our various fights for justice. Khachatourian began his lecture by mentioning the current situation in Syria and Turkish PM,Garo Paylan’s visit to Los Angeles in the previous week. He informed us on how in the last week, there were 5 deaths in the Armenian community of Syria and that the current situation due to the Syrian Civil War has only been escalating and effecting the Armenian community severely. -

He studied clarinet at the Kazan Music School, Kazan Music College and the Kazan Conservatory. He was appointed as associate clarinetist of the Tatarstan's Opera and Ballet Theatre, and of the Kazan State Symphony Orchestra. He toured extensively in Europe, then went to Canada where he settled permanently in 1998. He completed his musical education at the University of Montreal where he studied with Andre Moisan. He works as a conductor and Klezmer clarinetist and has composed a sizeable body of music. University of Adelaide Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Elder Conservatorium of Music Portfolio of Compositions and Exegesis: Composing for a Choral Spectrum Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music (MMus) by Callie Wood August 2008 225 Part B Exegesis Composing for a Choral Spectrum 226 B1 Exegesis: Composing for a choral spectrum. 1.1 RESEARCH QUESTIONS The research questions of this thesis were primarily addressed through practical experiments in choral music composition, which resulted in a portfolio of choral works covering a categorized choral spectrum ranging from very simple choral works for young children, to complex works for adult choirs of a professional standard. 1: What are the limitations for a composer in choice of text, text setting, choral groupings, and instrumental accompaniments when composing for a choral spectrum? 2: What are the limitations for a composer in regard to musicianship skills, aural skills, intonation skills, vocal range and ability when composing for a choral spectrum? Each of the works included in the portfolio addresses a particular aspect, or particular aspects, of the above research questions. To make the compositions especially suited to Australian choirs, the lyrics selected for all of the music have been written by Australian poets. To make the music accessible to a wide range of singers, all of the music for the portfolio is non-religious. Some of the compositions included in the portfolio were rehearsed, performed or recorded, which greatly assisted in the revision stage of the compositional process. However, arranging for all of the works in the portfolio to be performed and recorded was beyond the scope of this thesis. -

He entered the Petrograd Conservatory at age 13 and studied piano with Leonid Nikolayev and composition with Maximilian Steinberg. His graduation piece, the Symphony No. 1, gave him immediate fame and from there he went on to become the greatest composer during the Soviet Era of Russian history despite serious problems with the political and cultural authorities. He also concertized as a pianist and taught at the Moscow Conservatory. The belief that music carries the power to unite all human beings, regardless of their nationality, political and religious convictions and social status has always guided my choices. I have therefore accepted with great enthusiasm the invitation to become Music Director of the Tsinandali Festival and I completely support its commitment to inspire a new generation of musicians selected across neighbouring countries to create the Pan-Caucasian Youth Orchestra. I am convinced all of us can influence the development of a better society, one based on values of respect, tolerance and understanding through initiatives like the Pan-Caucasian Youth Orchestra where these wonderful young people get the chance to live, work – and most importantly – listen to each other as they come together to make music. I am grateful to Avi and Martin for having invited me to take part in this exciting project.
