A new cornulitid species, Conchicolites crispisulcans sp. nov., is described from the Wenlock of Gotland, Sweden. The undulating edge of C. crispisulcans sp. nov. peristomes is unique among the species of Conchicolites. This undulating peristome edge may reflect the position of setae at the tube aperture. The presence of the undulating peristome edge supports the hypothesis that cornulitids had setae and were probably related to brachiopods. Sivon Department of Geology University of Illinois Urbana, Illinois Abstract: The Maquoketa Group (Upper Ordovician) is poorly exposed in eastern Wisconsin. The most extensive exposure is found along Wequiock Creek, about 10 kilometers north of Green Bay. There the selection includes a small part of the upper Scales Shale and good exposures of the Fort Atkinson Limestone and Brainard Shale. The exposed Scales Shale is 2.4 m of clay, uniform in appearance and containing no apparent fossils. Limestone and dolomite dominate the 3.9 m thick Fort Atkinson Limestone. The carbonate beds alternate with layers of dolomitic shale that contain little to no fauna. The shales represent times of peak terrigenous clastic deposition in a quiet water environment. The car- bonates are predominantly biogenic dolomite and biomicrite. Biotic succession within single carbonate beds includes replacement of a strophomenid-Lepidocyclus dominated bottom community by a trep- ostome bryozoan-Plaesiomys-Lepidocyclus dominated community. Transported echinoderm and cryptostome bryozoan biocalcarenites are common. -

First skeletal microfauna from the Cambrian Series 3 of the Jordan Rift Valley (Middle East). Memoirs of the Association of Australasian Palaeontologists 42, 153-173. ISSN 0810-8889. For the first time, a Cambrian microfauna is reported from the Jordan Rift Valley. The fauna comes from low-latitude carbonates of the Numayri Member (Burj Formation, Jordan) and to a lesser degree the equivalent Nimra Member (Timna Formation, Israel). Co-occuring with trilobite, brachiopod and hyolith macrofossils, the microfauna is represented mostly by disarticulated poriferid (mostly hexactinellids) and echinoderm remains (eocrinoids and edrioasteroids). Among the hexactinellids, Rigbyella sp., many isolated triactins and tetractins, as well as a few pentactins and rare hexactins occur. Additional poriferid spicules come from heteractinids (Eiffelia araniformis [Missarzhevsky, 1981]) and polyactinellids (?Praephobetractinia). Chancelloriids (Archiasterella cf. hirundo Bengtson, 1990, Allonnia sp., Chancelloria sp., ?Ginospina sp.) are a rather rare faunal element. Micromolluscs are represented mainly by an indeterminable helcionellid. The probable octocoral spicule Microcoryne cephalata (Bengtson, 1990), torellellid and hyolithellid hyolithelminths, and a bradoriid arthropod occur as very few or single specimens. The same is the case with a probable siphogonuchitid. The occurrence of a cornulitid related microfossil may extend the stratigraphic range of this fossil group significantly. The rather low-diversity microfauna is overwhelmingly dominated by sessile epibenthic biota. The preferred feeding habit seems to have been suspension feeding and minor deposit feeding. The microfauna from the Jordan Rift Valley is typical for low-latitude carbonate environments of Cambrian Series 3 age that corresponds to the traditional late early to middle Cambrian. -

The pomp and ceremony! The emotion! I wondered why all of these people were so invested just because it was a new fossil species of something related to us in the very recent past. What about all of the other new fossil species that are discovered every day? I can’t imagine an international media frenzy, led by deans and vice chancellors amidst a backdrop of flags and flashbulbs, over a new species of ammonite. Most other fossil discoveries and publications of taxonomy are not met with such fanfare. The Annual Meeting is a time for sharing these discoveries, many of which will not bring the scientists involved international fame, but will advance our science and push the boundaries of our knowledge and understanding. -

FOERSTE THE SOURCE AND AFFINITIES OF THE SILURIAN FAUNAS In prehistoric times the North American continent was invaded by oceanic faunas from various directions. The tilting of the continent toward the south permitted the invasion of oceanic faunas from the Gulf of Mexico, and tilting toward the east, permitted invasions from the North Atlantic. There have been invasions also from the Arctic and Pacific. Some of these invasions extended far inland. Some from the Gulf of Mexico spread northward along the Mississippi embayment as far as the southern part of Canada, and some from the North Atlantic reached Ohio and Kentucky. As far as known, none of the invasions from the Arctic or Pacific reached Kentucky. In most Silurian faunas, the brachiopod element predominates. Three of the southern invasions—the Brassfield, Osgood, and Waldron—are characterized by the abundance of bryozoans, in addition to the brachiopods. The Brassfield and Waldron contain also a considerable number of gastropods, pelecypods, cephalopods, and trilobites, all of which are relatively scarce in the Osgood and Louisville. In the Osgood, on the contrary, there are numerous cystids, though almost all of these were described originally under the single generic name Holocystites. The Waldron is characterized by the considerable variety of crinoids. In the Laurel and Louisville bryozoans are rare. The Laurel is now characterized by numerous species of crinoids, a considerable number of which show affinities with crinoids occurring in Gotland and England. Possibly these invaded the American continent from some North Atlantic source. -

Pages 0 to 60 Title page, introductory matter, Chapters 1-4 Chapters 5-8, References and Appendix are in two additional files ABSTRACT The Much Wenlock Limestone Formation (Silurian: Wenlock, Homerian) of England and Wales contains a diverse invertebrate fauna including many rare and problematical taxa. This study investigates the palaeobiology and palaeoecology of five such groups: asteroids (starfish), the crinoid Calyptocymba mariae gen. et sp. nov., rostroconch molluscs, machaeridians and cornulitids. Six species of asteroids are recognized, including three new forms (Palasterina orchilocalia sp. nov., Hudsonaster? carectum sp. nov., and Doliaster brachyactis gen. et sp. nov.), that show a diverse range of morphologies. Most distinctive is the 13-rayed Lepidaster grayi Forbes, 1850, the oldest known multiradiate starfish. The variety of asteroid body shapes indicates a diversification of behaviour, particularly feeding strategies.
