Carnets de Géologie [Notebooks on Geology] - Letter 2012/01 (CG2012_L01) Shell repair in Anticalyptraea (Tentaculita) in the late Silurian (Pridoli) of Baltica 1 Olev VINN Abstract: Shell repair is common in the late Silurian (Pridoli) encrusting tentaculitoid tubeworm Anti- calyptraea calyptrata from Saaremaa, Estonia (Baltica), and is interpreted here as a result of failed predation. A. calyptrata has a shell repair frequency of 29 % (individuals with scars) with 17 speci- mens. There is probably an antipredatory adaptation, i.e. extremely thick vesicular walls, in the mor- phology of Silurian Anticalyptraea. The morphological and ecological evolution of Anticalyptraea could thus have been partially driven by predation. As so little is at present known of the organic remains occurring in the sedimentary rocks of these important mineral fields, a few notes on their affinities may not be out of place, notwithstanding the very poor state of pre- servation of the fossils. However, any facts that may be evolved from their elaboration will perhaps be of use to future investigators who may have the good fortune to take up the subject hereafter. New Late Ordovician cornulitids from Peru OLEV VINN & JUAN CARLOS GUTIÉRREZ-MARCO Two new species of cornulitids, Cornulites zatoni sp. nov. and Cornulites vilcae sp. nov., are described from the lower part (Sandbian) of the Calapuja Formation of south-western Peru. Late Ordovician cornulitid diversities of Peru (Gond- wana) and Estonia (Baltica) are similar. Aggregative growth form dominates among the cornulitids of the Sandbian of Peru. Multiple oriented C. zatoni sp. nov. specimens on a strophomenid brachiopod likely represent a syn vivo encrustation. Cornulitids from the Sandbian of Peru differ from those known from the Sandbian of Baltica. ACT A PAL A EON T 0 LOG ICA POLONICA Vol. XIX 1974 No. 4 BARBARA HAJI..ASZ TENTACULITES OF THE UPPER SILURIAN AND LOWER DEVONIAN OF POLAND Abstract. - The tentaculites, described in the present paper, come from the Upper Silurian deposits of the Baltic coastal region and the Lower Devonian deposits of the Radom-Lublin region. The Upper Silurian assemblage of tentaculites allows one to compare and correlate the Upper Silurian deposits of Northern Europe. The Lower Devonian tentaculites are' indicative of the Gedinnian and Siegenian age of the deposits under study and of their close correlations primarily with Podolia. PART I INTRODUCTION In Poland, the tentaculites have not so far been described in detail. Giirich (1895) was the first to take an interest in the tentaculites occurring in this country. He described the following species from the Holy Cross Mountains: Tentaculites sp. d. intermedium Barr., T. multiformis Sandb., T.ornatus? Sow., T. schlotheimi Koken., T. polonicus Gurich., T. sand bergeri Gurich, T. tenuicinctus Sandb., Styliolites sp. From the same region, the following species were identified by Paj chlowa (1957): Tentaculites schlotheimi Koken., Tentaculites sp., Styliolina laevis Richter and Styliolina sp. The tentaculites of the species Homoc tenus tenuicinctus (Roem.), Homoctenus sp., Styliolina laevis Richter and Styliolina sp. were distinguished by Koscielniakowska (1962-1967) in the Frasnian deposits of these region. The present writer described the following Eifelian tentaculites from the Holy Cross Mts and the Cracow-Cz~stochowaUpland (Hajlasz, 1967): Tentaculites schlotheimi Koken., T. subconicus Geinitz, T.sp., and Dicri coconus mosolovicus (Ljasch.). Next, a list of species from Lower Devonian of the Lublin area was published (Hajlasz, 1968). -

In the South Gallery Room of the L.C. Bates Museum sit eight fossil display cases. In the cramped sixth case rests a significant fossil, the Pertica quadrifaria—Maine’s state fossil which comes from the rocks of the world-renowned Trout Valley Formation. Alongside the rare fossilized remains of Pertica lies “The Budden Collection,” a group of seven fossils found in northern Maine and donated to the museum in 2013. A label sits below each fossil identifying the name of the specimen (and at times, its genus and species), the geologic period and 2 formation, and the location where the fossil was found. The exact descriptions that the L.C. Bates Museum provides on the labels is given in Table 1. Table 1. Sivon Department of Geology University of Illinois Urbana, Illinois Abstract: The Maquoketa Group (Upper Ordovician) is poorly exposed in eastern Wisconsin. The most extensive exposure is found along Wequiock Creek, about 10 kilometers north of Green Bay. There the selection includes a small part of the upper Scales Shale and good exposures of the Fort Atkinson Limestone and Brainard Shale. The exposed Scales Shale is 2.4 m of clay, uniform in appearance and containing no apparent fossils. Limestone and dolomite dominate the 3.9 m thick Fort Atkinson Limestone. The carbonate beds alternate with layers of dolomitic shale that contain little to no fauna. The shales represent times of peak terrigenous clastic deposition in a quiet water environment. The car- bonates are predominantly biogenic dolomite and biomicrite. Biotic succession within single carbonate beds includes replacement of a strophomenid-Lepidocyclus dominated bottom community by a trep- ostome bryozoan-Plaesiomys-Lepidocyclus dominated community. Transported echinoderm and cryptostome bryozoan biocalcarenites are common. -

First skeletal microfauna from the Cambrian Series 3 of the Jordan Rift Valley (Middle East). Memoirs of the Association of Australasian Palaeontologists 42, 153-173. ISSN 0810-8889. For the first time, a Cambrian microfauna is reported from the Jordan Rift Valley. The fauna comes from low-latitude carbonates of the Numayri Member (Burj Formation, Jordan) and to a lesser degree the equivalent Nimra Member (Timna Formation, Israel). Co-occuring with trilobite, brachiopod and hyolith macrofossils, the microfauna is represented mostly by disarticulated poriferid (mostly hexactinellids) and echinoderm remains (eocrinoids and edrioasteroids). Among the hexactinellids, Rigbyella sp., many isolated triactins and tetractins, as well as a few pentactins and rare hexactins occur. Additional poriferid spicules come from heteractinids (Eiffelia araniformis [Missarzhevsky, 1981]) and polyactinellids (?Praephobetractinia). Chancelloriids (Archiasterella cf. hirundo Bengtson, 1990, Allonnia sp., Chancelloria sp., ?Ginospina sp.) are a rather rare faunal element. Micromolluscs are represented mainly by an indeterminable helcionellid. The probable octocoral spicule Microcoryne cephalata (Bengtson, 1990), torellellid and hyolithellid hyolithelminths, and a bradoriid arthropod occur as very few or single specimens. The same is the case with a probable siphogonuchitid. The occurrence of a cornulitid related microfossil may extend the stratigraphic range of this fossil group significantly. The rather low-diversity microfauna is overwhelmingly dominated by sessile epibenthic biota. The preferred feeding habit seems to have been suspension feeding and minor deposit feeding. The microfauna from the Jordan Rift Valley is typical for low-latitude carbonate environments of Cambrian Series 3 age that corresponds to the traditional late early to middle Cambrian. -

Palaeontologia Electronica palaeo-electronica.org Devonian Tentaculitoidea of the Malvinokaffric Realm of Brazil, Paraná Basin Jeanninny Carla Comniskey and Renato Pirani Ghilardi ABSTRACT The Tentaculitoidea is represented by extinct invertebrates characterized by small, conic, carbonate shells of animals that inhabiting exclusively marine environ- ments. The tentaculitoids occur from the Ordovician to Devonian, with diversity peak- ing in the Middle Devonian. The Tentaculitoidea has three orders: Tentaculitida (benthic habit), Homoctenida, and Dacryoconarida (planktonic habit). In Brazil, the old- est tentaculitoids occur in strata of the early Silurian, with the genus Tentaculites. Spec- imens of the Dacryoconarida and Homoctenida orders were only found in the Lower Devonian strata. In this study, we conducted taxonomic analyses of specimens in col- lections from various research institutions, including samples used in the last system- atic study with this group, in mid-1991. The present study aims to review the systematic aspects of the tentaculitoids of the Devonian strata, Paraná basin, Brazil. Seven species of tentaculitoids were identified: two species previously described, Ten- taculites jaculus and Tentaculites crotalinus and five news species: Tentaculites kozlo- wskii, Tentaculites paranaensis, Uniconus ciguelii, Homoctenus katzerii, and Styliolina langenii. This is the first known occurrence of the genus Uniconus in Devonian strata from Brazil. The analyzed species of homoctenids and dacryoconarids are larger than those previously described in the specialized literature. This study demonstrated that the tentaculitoids of the Paraná Basin have a stratigraphic distribution from the end of the Pragian to the early Givetian. Jeanninny Carla Comniskey.
