  • First Served the Rahway Valley Railroad
Metropolitan Division TCA Production Sample Shown Order NOW – First Come – First Served The Rahway Valley Railroad (RVRR) was a short-line railroad in the Northeastern United States which connected the Lehigh Valley Railroad in Roselle Park and the Central Railroad of New Jersey in Cranford and with the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western in Summit. Operating over a span of 95 years (1897–1992) in Union County, New Jersey, in its prime it was one of the most successful short-line railroads in U.S. history, turning a profit during the Great Depression. During its lifetime, the RVRR was instrumental in the development of Kenilworth (site of its headquarters) as well as Union Township, Springfield and other towns along its route. The RV 'Superman inspired' logo was adopted in the early 1980's when Bernie Cahill, President of the RV, leased a large group of new boxcars from ITEL Rail Corp. As an interesting footnote, Walter M. Matuch of RMT, then a college student, worked on the RV as a brakeman in the late 1960s. The car, made by RMT, features a stamped metal frame, metal brake wheel and die-cast trucks. CATHOLICS INCORPORATED: CLASS, POWER, AND THE POLITICS OF ASSIMILATION IN NINETEENTH CENTURY AMERICA By PATRICK T. MCGRATH A dissertation submitted to the School of Graduate Studies Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in History Written under the direction of T.J. Jackson Lears And approved by _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey October 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Catholics Incorporated: Class, Power, and the Politics of Assimilation in Nineteenth Century America By PATRICK T. MCGRATH Dissertation Director: T.J. Jackson Lears This project takes as its subject the integration of Catholicism into nineteenth-century American society, politics, and culture. Adopting a cross-regional approach, the dissertation argues that by midcentury the Church was far better integrated into the American South than the North, and had forged a powerful alliance with the Southern planter elite and the Southern-dominated Democratic Party. In the aftermath of the Civil War, the Church increasingly forged an alliance with the growing Irish- American middle-class, whose influence within Democratic politics proved critical to the advancement of Catholic interests. During the Gilded Age the Church itself proved an arena of ideological conflict, as working-class radicals and Irish-American elites sought to define the Church’s relationship to power and poverty. In the 1890s, however, many working-class radicals returned to the Church and embraced Catholic conservatism. At 1900 the Irish-dominated institutional Church defined itself as a bulwark of conservatism, moral order, and “American” values against the threat of secular radicals and liberals.

[47 boxes] Box Contents | Company Name List Content Note The majority of the transportation corporations included in this series are railroad and street railway companies. These corporation files contain official documents pertaining to the corporate status and/or operations of each company, such as: incorporations (charters) and amendments, annual reports, agreements and leases, name changes, mergers, sales, route maps, etc. While some of the filings date to the early nineteenth century (e.g. documents from as early as 1816 in the Delaware and Raritan Canal file), most date from after 1875, when corporations engaged in business in New Jersey were required by law to file with the Secretary of State annual reports providing the names and terms of the company's directors, officers, etc. (see P.L. 1877, chap. 68). Box 46 of this series contains a card index to the corporation files, which not only records the years of annual reports received by the Secretary of State, but also reports individual filings for each company. A list of company names is provided following the box contents list below. The company name list provides the file number if a file exists for a company; in cases where a card exists without an actual file, "--" has been used in place of the file number.
