It is in two parts: a Character Statement and a Management Strategy. 1.2 That Character Statement provides factual information regarding the Conservation Area, describing the features which gives it its special character including the history, architecture and history of the area. The Management Strategy gives specific planning guidance and enhancement proposals. 1.3 Conservation areas were introduced by the Civic Amenities Act 1967 to safeguard areas of "special architectural or historic interest." Battersea Square Conservation Area was first designated on 9th November 1972, this was extented on 24th May 1989 and then extended to again on 28th November 1991. 1.4 This Appraisal has been produced in accordance with government guidelines set out in Planning Policy Guidance Note 15 (PPG15), and the English Heritage Guidance Notes of August 2005. These state that local planning authorities need to define and record the special interest, character and appearance of all conservation areas in their care. The intention of this Appraisal is to provide a clear analysis of the character and appearance of Battersea Square Conservation Area, which can assist in development control decisions, and which can help to support the Council's decisions in the event of appeals. In addition, the Management Strategy addresses issues which have been identified in the character appraisal for the enhancement and preservation of the Conservation Area. 1.5 It is important to note however that no appraisal can be completely comprehensive and the omission of a particular building, feature or open space should not be taken to imply that it is of no interest. 2 Wandsworth Conservation & Design Group Battersea Square Conservation Area Appraisal & Management Strategy (DRAFT) Battersea Square Conservation Area 5 7 S R B E E O B 5 L or L U I o 9 N Con T N st & S G LB I E B Bd H V R y A W O K Und E WA L B K o li 6 n g 5 b ro k e P S r Games Court c im h o a o ry l Mud 1 5 Crewkerne 6 1 4 Court 5 1 Mud 3 4 8 1 9 7 1 8 6 1 1 0 1 4.5m 7 1 1 LB 2 1 2 B 3 O L IN Montevetro G B 6 R O 8 K E 4 W A 2 L K 1 5 Exford 6 1 Court 4 5 1 3 8 4 9 71 1 1 8 t ur 5 1 o 6 0 C 1 to 80 1 Exford n 1 o 1 d 1 2 Court ve 3 le 4 1 8 2 C 1 3 D 9 A O R Selworthy 6 0 1 H 1 C 7 R House Somerset Estate 1 El 0 U 0 H 1 C 2 A 1 E 3 1 6 S Chelwood 4 5 R 1 1 E T Dimson Court 1 T 3 A 8 St Mary's Hall 4 Somerset B 1 9 Church 7 Estate Draycott 1 5.2m 8 6 Court 1 1 1 d 3 0 o 7 1 o 4 lw t 8 r 1 1 e u 1 h 9 W 2 C o L C C 1 0 2 C 8 o 3 BM 5.67m t 6 0 1 1 1 El 7 e Sub 1 1 ous 1 Sta 1 2 d H n r 2 1 1 o t 1 fo r 5 k e 2 t t 3 S r 6 U par is u N S Misterton M o B C U R 5 Court Y 1 3 6 L A 4 N 8 E 1 9 7 1 8 9 6 1 1 0 9 MP 7 2 Shepton Court 1 0 P 5 y o s 1 ts 9 d Club 1 to 42 B 1 2 P 2 B 1 L P 0 3 & 3 t 1 s 5 n 7 o t 4 s C 6 t e 2 s 1 s o y r P l 1 e l s o m o 3 A o 3 h 5.0m S c L S G 1 to 14 5 ry , t e 2 s rs 1 Old Swan 4 n u o 6 N 3 1 C Wharf o r 9 PH o 2 B 8 3 96 VIC 9 Posts A Ps 3 RAG W E W at El Sub Sta ALK er 13 1 6 8 3 2 t 9 o 4 1 o t rt 9 ou 9 0 C 4 d fiel 8 El om s Bl 23 h Sub Posts e c 1 r e 2 a Sta 9 m t 2 a 0 3 0 rt e 1 u a W Co ld 7 2 h R h 1 to ie g 8 mf i 8 Blo 1 T H 9 3 2 a AD 3 n 5 O r 4 1 R 3 a to E 4 e 0 5 70 2 IDG 18 s BR Me 6 T 6 3 S 7 ve r 1 E 1 i W 1 e 1 t 7 R t a 5 Shingle 20 B G R 0 A B 2 6 N 1 1 t PH o ur 0 1 w o F 2 5 C 3 2 t t t o I s C e 1 E 3 1 1 n 0 3 t r 3 1 9 8 4 e 2 u 3 1 9 2 o t 1 L B o 1 3 a 1 1 u 0 D 7 5 1 d r 1 o t t 8 1 1 2 1 1 Vali 6 an S t 9 H T ous 9 R e E 1 6 E 3 o 0 t 9 T 1 6 8 1 o t 1 4.5m 1 5 26 1 1 9 9 4 5 T 2 E 1 2 E 2 24 TR 4 S 2 1 M 8 1 8 A o 2 t t KH o 0 r R t u A W 1 o 12 1 d C P D 7 1 ea 6 t 0 s 3 2 4.1m 2 Bow Battersea 1 4 4.1m 7 Square 1 Posts 4 5 El 6 3 5 o t 1 Sub Sta 7 3 Althorpe P r T 2 E ic E P 5 R 3 h T o Mews 1 S st a AM 8 4.7m s r H 1 d 7 K 2 R 1 1 A 8 C P o 6 t 1 1 9 3 t 2 1 P 2 1 2 4 LB os 0 t 1 0 s 5 2 3 1 9 2 7 6 S 5 3 1 3 1 3 8 2 4 t 2 o 3 8 1 5 5 4 2 BM 4.33m 4 B Ship House 2 M 4 .5 2 5 6 2 8 2 m 1 P o t Chy 6 l a y 1 El 7 g 1 r Sub 5 o LB u 3 7 6 n Sta 1 d Cotswold 4 3 1 Mews H o 4.2m u 1 t 0 3 m 4 p 9 h re 2 y Devonshire 1 C 0 s T o House u n N i E rt a C r Chy Salesian College e S 4 4 v E 2 4 3 i R 1 R C 2 o t e E 6 3 5 h G 6 B 2 T A A 1 R T 3 A T E IC R V S E A 4.8m 5 H 4 IG o t H T 5 S h 3 The T El Sub Sta R Chy e M Tho E S 3 Brunel mas's o o 2 Royal E Vic T n u t t 8 Lodge Preparatory e h 5 s Academy L 4 s 5 0 o School to 6 o 1 r n BM 5.21m i FB t d of ur S Co o c n ay h Warehouse Dancing nds o Li C o S l h a B u c M r r c e 4 h . 0 d 2 T 4 8 o 6 4 C m P H f C 4 P l PH a 4 e t h y h u g a Old r r e c o r h u t Battersea n d 8 House 4 Eaton House 6 4 BM 4.97m 0 7 4 3 5 1 o t 1 ET TRE TT S TRO TCB 4.5m urt 4.0m y Co BATTERSEA lanc C 6 6 7 5 1 1 2 1 to El Sub Sta 9 2 T 8 1 3 9 0 3 R 3 4 A 8 O rc 5 he 5 r H T 2 o 3 u T se 8 8 0 S 6 1 to PH T 2 R H 1 4 3 a 7 2 yth 2 or 7 E n H o 9 ou t 2 E se 3 2 T 2 2 M 2 6 4.6m 1 to o 8 r 6 2 g 3 3 W 6 h a 1 6 ite 1 a Ho n us 2 C e C C 6 o o 2 o l 3 e u 4 l 4 e s r s Restoration Square t 2 2 C 0 C 9 o o u 4 u r 6 2 t 3 r 0 1 t 0 2 2 0 e a s 4 o t 4 u 2 o 3 6 St Johns 8 o t 5 5 1 H 1 a d 6 l 3 1 4 6 Estate e 4 1 i f 7 n 6 i 1 6 9 W 9 1 3 1 3 1 2 3 2 1 8 quare 8 8 S 6 estoration R 1 M 0 C 5 t o 9 o o 5 1 1 0 r l St Johns t o 1 7 e g 5 s a n C 1 1 1 Estate o C t 1 o u 1 o 8 r 1 e u 6 t 1 9 s 5 1 ou e H 6 urnum r 5 t Mud b T A s La t 5 r o R c u h o ) lub O 3 C ( 1 H e White 9 2 r H 9 2 T o u T s d 2 l 13 MP e House 2 3 e 1 S 7 H i El Sub Sta f 4 7 T Pontoons P 6 n R i 6 7 8 M 1 o t 6 8 8 14 E MP W 10 15 E 1 16 11 e 8 12 e T 1 e c us e Ho h o ri w 1 t Po a 1 m 1 PH 5 10 C o u r MP 18 t 0 4 4 FB o 8 MP t t r 1 u 6 o 8 C 1 VICARAGE CRESCENT 17 e d i 1 s 5 e 1 v 9 o 1 r 1 0 2 1 2 6 G 5 MP 9 3 TCBs o t 9 1 SHUTTLEWORTH ROAD MP 3.6m 3.7m 1 to 14 3 0 n Windsor Court McKierna Court 16 39 2 6 2 5 7 30 28 29 8 n Court 9 McKierna m S 4 t 6 2 D 9 J 4 W .
