It is in two parts: a Character Statement and a Management Strategy. 1.2 That Character Statement provides factual information regarding the Conservation Area, describing the features which gives it its special character including the history, architecture and history of the area. The Management Strategy gives specific planning guidance and enhancement proposals. 1.3 Conservation areas were introduced by the Civic Amenities Act 1967 to safeguard areas of "special architectural or historic interest." Battersea Square Conservation Area was first designated on 9th November 1972, this was extented on 24th May 1989 and then extended to again on 28th November 1991. 1.4 This Appraisal has been produced in accordance with government guidelines set out in Planning Policy Guidance Note 15 (PPG15), and the English Heritage Guidance Notes of August 2005. These state that local planning authorities need to define and record the special interest, character and appearance of all conservation areas in their care. The intention of this Appraisal is to provide a clear analysis of the character and appearance of Battersea Square Conservation Area, which can assist in development control decisions, and which can help to support the Council's decisions in the event of appeals. Three located archaeological features, deposits and finds that date from the Roman, Saxon, medieval and post-medieval periods. A possible Saxon ditch was found. A deposit model based on borehole logs, previous archaeological excavations, evaluation trenching and cartographic study identified a geological discontinuity with alluvium to the west and north of the site and glacial tills to the east and south-east. Finds include Roman and medieval brick and tile, Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery, animal bone and worked timber. The evaluation trenching has provided further evidence for Saxon and medieval activity associated with Barking Abbey. Location and reference of archive: The archive is presently held at Thames Valley Archaeological Services, Reading and will be deposited at The Museum of London in due course, with accession code ABR14.

    Emily Mitchell Patronage and Politics at Barking Abbey, c. 950 - c. 1200 Abstract This thesis is a study of the Benedictine abbey of Barking in Essex from the tenth to the twelfth centuries. It is based on a wide range of published and unpublished documentary sources, and on hagiographie texts written at the abbey. It juxtaposes the literary and documentary sources in a new way to show that both are essential for a full understanding of events, and neither can be fully appreciated in isolation. It also deliberately crosses the political boundary of 1066, with the intention of demonstrating that political events were not the most significant determinant of the recipients of benefactors’ religious patronage. It also uses the longer chronological scale to show that patterns of patronage from the Anglo-Saxon era were frequently inherited by the incoming Normans along with their landholdings. Through a detailed discussion of two sets of unpublished charters (Essex Record Office MSS D/DP/Tl and Hatfield, Hatfield House MS Ilford Hospital 1/6) 1 offer new dates and interpretations of several events in the abbey’s history, and identify the abbey’s benefactors from the late tenth century to 1200. As Part III shows, it has been possible to trace patterns of patronage which were passed down through several generations, crossing the political divide of 1066. Royal patronage is shown to have been of great significance to the abbey, and successive kings exploited their power of advowson in different ways according to the political atmosphere o f England. The literary sources are discussed in a separate section, but with full reference to the historical narrative.

    77 Who Wrote the Nun's Life of Edward? 1 Jane Bliss University ofOxford This article examines the identity of the Nun of Barking, aut~or of an Anglo­ Norman Life of Edward the Confessor; and addresses three questions. The flrst is about the Nun's audience; the poem's destination is a vital element in discussion of the author's identity, and of the quality of her authorship. Next, I examine the available evidence for sources other than Aelred's Vita; the Nun's work has sometimes been regarded as a mere copy: 'a translation from start to flnish'. 3 My title focuses on 'writing' in the sense of 'authorship', because the Nun adapts her material so extensively that she can claim to be the author, not merely the translator, of her Edward. Lastly, to establish whether the Nun was identical with Clemence of Barking, author of the Life of Saint Catherine (of Alexandria),' I analyse both poems. My study draws upon a body of recent scholarship on women's writing, and on AnglO-Norman language and literatureS The Nun's poem is a key text for a recent study of early mysticism;' this aspect of her work has therefore been discussed elsewhere, as has her pioneering use of the term 'fln' amor', and the enhanced role of Edith, Edward's queen.' Earlier scholars' neglect of the poem may be because some perceived it as a slavish translation, or because it suffered in comparison with the freer (later) version by Matthew Paris' Laurent thinks Matthew wanted to suppress it,' but there is no evidence that Matthew did any such thing: the Nun's work survives in three manuscripts, and a fragment.
