Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, and Jim OʼDonnell, President and CEO, BMW North America, LLC, announced today that the BMW Guggenheim Lab will launch in New York City from August 3 to October 16. Following the New York installation, the BMW Guggenheim Lab will travel to Berlin in spring/summer 2012, and to a city in Asia to be announced later this year. Conceived as an urban think tank and mobile laboratory, the BMW Guggenheim Lab will explore issues confronting contemporary cities and provide a public place and online forum for sharing ideas and practical solutions. The BMW Guggenheim Lab and all of its programming will be free to the public. The new website (bmwguggenheimlab.org) and online communities will create and extend the opportunity to participate in this multidisciplinary urban experiment worldwide. Over the six-year migration of the BMW Guggenheim Lab, there will be three different themes and three distinct mobile structures, each designed by a different architect and each traveling to three cities around the world. Jenny Holzer, Attempting to Evoke Thought in Society
Simple Truths By Elena, Raphaelle, Tamara and Zofia Introduction • A world without art would not only be dull, ideas and thoughts wouldn’t travel through society or provoke certain reactions on current events and public or private opinions. The intersection of arts and political activism are two fields defined by a shared focus of creating engagement that shifts boundaries, changes relationships and creates new paradigms. Many different artists denounce political issues in their artworks and aim to make large audiences more conscious of different political aspects. One particular artist that focuses on political art is Jenny Holzer, attempting to evoke thought in society. • Jenny Holzer is an American artist who focuses on differing perspectives on difficult political topics. Her work is primarily text-based, using mediums such as paper, billboards, and lights to display it in public spaces. • In order to make her art as accessible to the public, she intertwines aesthetic art with text to portray her political opinions from various points of view. The text strongly reinforces her message, while also leaving enough room for the work to be open to interpretation. Truisms, (1977– 79), among her best-known public works, is a series inspired by Holzer’s experience at Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program. These form a series of statements, each one representing one individual’s ideology behind a political issue. When presented all together, the public is able to see multiple perspectives on multiple issues. Holzer’s goal in this was to create a less polarized and more tolerant view of our differing viewpoints, normally something that separates us and confines us to one way of thinking. -

Expos 20: The Rise of Pop Fall 2014 Barker 133, MW 10:00 & 11:00 Kevin Birmingham (birmingh@fas) Expos Office: 1 Bow Street #223 Office Hours: Mondays 12:15-2 The idea that there is a hierarchy of art forms – that some styles, genres and media are superior to others – extends at least as far back as Aristotle. Aesthetic categories have always been difficult to maintain, but they have been particularly fluid during the past fifty years in the United States. What does it mean to undercut the prestige of high art with popular culture? What happens to art and society when the boundaries separating high and low art are gone – when Proust and Porky Pig rub shoulders and the museum resembles the supermarket? This course examines fiction, painting and film during a roughly ten-year period (1964-1975) in which reigning cultural hierarchies disintegrated and older terms like “high culture” and “mass culture” began to lose their meaning. In the first unit, we will approach the death of the high art novel in Thomas Pynchon’s The Crying of Lot 49, which disrupts notions of literature through a superficial suburban American landscape and through the form of the novel itself. The second unit turns to Andy Warhol and Pop Art, which critics consider either an American avant-garde movement undermining high art or an unabashed celebration of vacuous consumer culture. In the third unit, we will turn our attention to The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the rise of cult films in the 1970s. Throughout the semester, we will engage art criticism, philosophy and sociology to help us make sense of important concepts that bear upon the status of art in modern society: tradition, craftsmanship, community, allusion, protest, authority and aura. -

Diesen einzigartigen „rolling sculptures“ widmet sich nun erstmals eine aufwändig gestaltete Publikation, die Ende dieses Jahres erscheint und die Historie der legendären BMW Art Cars im Detail nachzeichnet. Die Fotosammlung „AutoWerke“ mit Arbeiten von u.a. Thomas Demand, Thomas Struth, Candida Höfer und Rineke Dijkstra wurde 2005 im Rahmen der Neueröffnung des BMW Werk Leipzig dem dortigen Museum für Bildende Künste geschenkt. Formate zahlreicher Museen werden kontinuierlich weltweit unterstützt, die Akademie der Bildenden Künste München wird mit einem Ausstellungsraum gefördert, in dem Studierende ihre Werke und Installationen eigenständig kuratieren. Zur Förderung junger Kuratoren wurde 2011 die MINI/Goethe-Institut Kuratorenresidenz „Ludlow 38“ ins Leben gerufen, die Ausstellungsmachern aus Deutschland für den Zeitraum eines Jahres die Arbeit in New York ermöglicht. -

By Michael Angelo Tata So when the doorbell rang the night before, it was Liza in a hat pulled down so nobody would recognize her, and she said to Halston, “Give me every drug you’ve got.” So he gave her a bottle of coke, a few sticks of marijuana, a Valium, four Quaaludes, and they were all wrapped in a tiny box, and then a little figure in a white hat came up on the stoop and kissed Halston, and it was Marty Scorsese, he’d been hiding around the corner, and then he and Liza went off to have their affair on all the drugs ( Diaries , Tuesday, January 3, 1978). Privileged Intake Of all the creatures who populate and punctuate Warhol’s worlds—drag queens, hustlers, movie stars, First Wives—the drug user and abuser retains a particular access to glamour. Existing along a continuum ranging from the occasional substance dilettante to the hard-core, raging junkie, the consumer of drugs preoccupies Warhol throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s. Their actions and habits fascinate him, his screens become the sacred place where their rituals are projected and packaged. Wedel Art Collective have collaborated with six international leading artists to produce a set of unique artist-designed face masks, all proceeds from which will be donated to international relief efforts and artist support for those affected by COVID-19. Launching exclusively on MATCHESFASHION from 24 August the project draws upon the power of contemporary art to encourage more people to wear face masks to protect, and support. Each of the participating artists are internationally celebrated for their work addressing some of the most important social and political issues of our times. Through the inspiration of these artists’ work, the limited-edition face masks reflect the artists’ passionate and urgent response to the pandemic, highlighting the need for community action. Artists include: Jenny Holzer (b. 1950, Ohio, USA); Rashid Johnson (b. 1977, Chicago, USA); Barbara Kruger (b. 1975, New Jersey, USA); Raymond Pettibon (b. 1957, Arizona, USA); Lorna Simpson (b. 1960, New York, USA); and Rosemarie Trockel (b. 1952, Schwerte, Germany). Jenny Holzer's face mask taps into the necessity of mask-wearing, reading “You – Me”. “I like to think of my work as useful,” Holzer says “That is a recurrent impulse, when something happens in the world, if I have an idea that be properly responsive… Not necessarily a cure or a solution but at least an offering.” Raymond Pettibon's mask design features Vavoom, a figure inspired by Felix the Cat that he has drawn since the mid-1980s.
