  • Clubbing in Los Angeles Jonny Coleman Tackles the Multi-Farious Scene in One of America's Biggest Cities
Clubbing in Los Angeles Jonny Coleman tackles the multi-farious scene in one of America's biggest cities. Los Angeles has always been a capital of pop culture. Outside of rave, however, it's never had much of a reputation for its dance music culture. Until recently, that is. The efforts of local promoters have given rise to enormous EDM festivals, the Low End Theory-driven beat scene and thriving techno and house crews—and have led to the city finally becoming internationally recognized. Now, it seems, a place that houses four million people inside the city limits and 18 million in the greater Southland area, is finally representing itself on the world stage. True to its geography—a set of suburbs fronting as a megalopolis—Los Angeles doesn't have a dominant sound or theme. Instead, there are many scenes tugging for attention and battling over the few legitimate dance venues the city has to offer. It's enormously difficult to acquire a liquor license in LA, thanks in no small part to club-owning cowboys like Eddie Nash (of Wonderland murder fame), and those that do can't serve all that late anyway. Most nights last from 10 until 2 or 3 AM (a reality that often results in seeing your headlining DJ for two hours). It doesn't help that many of the historical clubs/bars in places like Hollywood and West Hollywood are a tough sell to fans of underground music, as the price points, degree of parking difficulty and douchebaggery quotient are all high. That means that many parties of note take place downtown or in other east side neighborhoods (if not a private estate).

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

  • Pass the Flow: the Subcultural Practice of Liquid Dance
PASS THE FLOW: THE SUBCULTURAL PRACTICE OF LIQUID DANCE A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN DANCE by David F. Heller December 2018 Examining Committee Members: Dr. Sherril Dodds, Advisory Chair, Boyer College of Music and Dance Dr. Kariamu Welsh, Boyer College of Music and Dance Dr. Nancy Morris, Media and Communications Dr. Larisa Kingston Mann, External Examiner, Media and Communications © Copyright 2018 by David Francis Heller All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation explores how the subcultural practice of liquid dance emerged from US rave culture and continues to sustain itself and evolve in today’s era of social media and EDM festival culture. I draw upon the concept of flow as a lens to trace the historical, aesthetic, digital, social and subcultural trajectory of liquid dance. I analyze how this subculture continues to evolve through individual practice, as well as how dance is shared through online and live dance exchange. My dissertation consists of seven chapters that provide both academic and practitioner perspectives of liquid dance. My research methods combine a multidisciplinary approach to implementing semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and digital archival research. My fieldwork consists of interviewing fourteen liquid practitioners, as well as conducting ethnographic research at an EDM festival where liquid dancers annually attend and participate. The purpose of this project is twofold. One, to contribute new knowledge to the field of dance studies on the specific dance genre of liquid, which up until now has not been documented in this field.

  • Importing Into the United States a Guide for Commercial Importers
1 Importing into the United States A Guide for Commercial Importers A Notice To Our Readers On March 1, 2003, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, or CBP, was born as an agency of the Department of Homeland Security, merging functions of the former Customs Service, Immigration and Naturalization Service, Border Patrol, and Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Many changes took place in preparation for this merger and many have occurred since in order to safeguard U.S. borders against high- risk cargo, contraband, and unsafe imports. We encourage you to visit our Website (www.cbp.gov) for the latest information on specific laws, regulations or procedures that may affect your import transactions. * * * * * * This edition of Importing Into the United States contains material pursuant to the Trade Act of 2002 and the Customs Modernization Act (Title VI of the North American Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act), commonly referred to as the Mod Act. The Customs Modernization Act (Title VI of the North American Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act [P.L. 103-182, 107 Stat. 2057]) became effective December 8, 1993. Its provisions have fundamentally altered the relationship between importers and CBP by shifting to the importer, the legal responsibility for declaring the value, classification, and rate of duty applicable to entered merchandise. A prominent feature of the Mod Act is a relationship between CBP and importers that is characterized by informed compliance. (See Section Three of this book, which starts on page 26, for details and definitions.) A key component of informed compliance is the shared responsibility between CBP and the import community, wherein CBP communicates its requirements to the importer, and the importer, in turn, uses reasonable care to assure that CBP is provided with accurate and timely data pertaining to his or her importations.

WOLF PHILOSOPHICAL LIBRARY 2Nfc#/ "for\ COPYRIGHT, 1947, BY THE PHILOSOPHICAL LIBRARY, INC. 15 EAST 4OTH STREET, NEW YORK CITY PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA To M.E.H. 7 present this boot^ first breeze in the tempest of my life to that noble spirit ivho walkj with the tempest and loves with the breeze. KAHLIL GIBRAN Editors Preface IXAHLIL GIBRAN might well have been an ancient, for the delicacy of his mind, the obser- vations of his inner eyes, and the broad wisdom of his every parable. To ponder his profound approach to the complexities of life and then realize his recency to this world presents a momen- tary incongruity. It is soon lost, however, for Gibran is of all ages. The advanced thought expressed in his rich, perceptive manner of thinking aloud slowly is characteristic of the mystics of the East, who de- voted themselves to intensity of thought develop- ment. His mental meandering pursues a course that enables him to set forth the most intricate and deep-set ideas and problems in the simplest of language and understanding, and this quality, sought by so many and possessed by so few, para- doxically places Gibran many years into the future. Vll It is actually astounding that this, "the first breeze in the tempest of his life," with its obvious historical influence, tremendous philosophical sig- nificance, metaphysical probings, and ripe appre- ciation of life was written when he was scarcely twenty years old.
