Brown bear populations in Northwest Spain comprise around 200 individuals separated into two sub-populations that are very difficult to connect. We analysed the fragmentation and connectivity for the Ancares-Courel Site of Community Importance (SCI) and its surroundings, including the distribution area for this species within Asturias and in the northwest of Castile and León. The work analysed the territory’s connectivity by using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The distance-cost method was used to calculate the least-cost paths with Patch Matrix. The Conefor Sensinode software calculated the Integral Connectivity Index and the Connectivity Probability. Locating the least-cost paths made it possible to define areas of favourable connectivity and to identify critical areas, while the results obtained from the connectivity indices led to the discovery of habitat patches that are fundamental for maintaining connectivity within and between different spaces. Three routes turned out to be the main ones connecting the northern (Ancares) and southern (Courel) areas of the SCI. Finally, this work shows the importance of conserving natural habitats and the biology, migration, and genetic exchange of sensitive species.

    Escalada do Sil Escalada Do Sil represents a revival of a style of wine that once upon a time was popular in the high elevation region of Valdeorras. Today Valdeorras is mostly known for the production of white Godello grapes, however before the 1800s, this region was known for the production of red wine, specifically grapes like Merenzao, which are rare to find today. Escalada Do Sil is a blend of Merenzao, Mencía and Garnacha Tintorera. Merenzao is very aromatic, offering aromas of strawberries and violets. In Portugal, the Merenzao grape takes the name of Bastardo and in France, specifically in the Jura region, it takes the name of Trousseau. Mencía provides body and Garnacha Tintorera (also known as Alicante Bouschet) contributes dark pigmentation and acidity. The vineyards of this rare wine are very near the cliffs of the Sil River, hence the name Escalada Do Sil. Valdeorras is known for its altitude and mineral soils composed of slate and granite. The region is in between Bierzo and Ribeira Sacra, but its climate is very different. Its higher elevation brings cooler nights and mornings, producing grapes with uplifted tones and refined tannins. There is so much more than what is readily apparent beyond the breathtaking imagery of vertigo-inducing vineyard terraces towering over the silvery, slow-moving rivers far below. Broken up into five general wine regions, it has a greater diversity of grapes, expositions, altitudes, slope angles, bedrock types and topsoil compositions than many other wine regions. This subject is expansive and thankfully, there is now increasingly more useful information about it, thanks to Spanish wine journalism that has begun to focus more heavily on Spain’s backcountry. Luis Gutiérrez, from the Wine Advocate, the team at spanishwinelover.com blog, and the website of importer, Jose Pastor Selections, are some of my go-to references written in English. One challenge of delving deep into this region comes from the fact that much of its history has been lost for generations to hard times and nearly complete abandonment. The bulk of the historical and cultural details are in Spanish, or even the far more challenging Galician—also called Galego, a regional dialect that combines elements of Spanish and Portuguese with its own individual twist. My goal here is to offer a better understanding of the Ribeira Sacra by highlighting some unique elements within each of the five subzones from a broad, terroir-oriented perspective. Su situación en la península y su relieve confieren a este territorio unas características únicas. En la misma comarca coexisten los macrobioclimas templado y mediterráneo, a su vez también la comparten el sector biogeográfico Lacianego-Ancarense, al noroeste y al norte, y el Berciano-Sanabrés, en el resto del territorio. El sector Lacianego-Ancarense pertenece a la región Eurosiberiana, y se caracteriza por la presencia de bosques caducifolios, especialmente de Quecus petraea y Quercus robur. El sector Berciano-Sanabrés pertenece a la región Mediterránea, y se caracteriza por la presencia de bosques perennifolios de hoja coriácea, especialmente de Quercus rotundifolia y Quercus suber. Las condiciones climáticas del centro del Bierzo hacen de este una zona ideal para la agricultura, de hecho, el paisaje se encuentra altamente modelado por la misma. La Sierra de Ancares y las Médulas son dos de los lugares más especiales de la comarca, en el primero se unen los dos mundos biogeográficos del Bierzo y en el segundo se conserva uno de los paisajes más característicos de la zona, una imponente explotación aurífera del Imperio Romano.

    Escalada do Sil Blanco Escalada do Sil Blanco is a beautiful examination of place from the mind of Alberto Orte. Grown on steep, terraced slopes high above the Sil River in eastern Galicia, this is a singular expression of Godello that showcases the unique terroir of DO Valdeorras. Located between Bierzo and Ribeira Sacra, Valdeorras is the “Gateway to Galicia,” famous for a mild micro-climate that spurred the Romans to call it the “Valley of Gold.” Planted at high altitude far above the river, this site brings cool nights and warm (but not hot) days, allowing for persistent acidity alongside lush, round fruit. Composed of slate and granite, the soils of this site are perfect for the adding texture and a mineral backbone to the classic Godello orchard fruit profile. WHAT MAKES THIS WINE UNIQUE?: This is a rare, limited production Godello from a single parcel of low-yield vines in Valdeorras. With natural yeast fermentation, no malolactic fermentation and elevage in used barrel, Escalada do Sil Blanco provides a clear expression of a unique terroir, and in the glass hints at the unsung ageability of this special grape. RATING HISTORY: 2018 94 VM, 92 WA, 90 JS GRAPE: 100% Godello. Vines 20 years old on average. Tended in slate and granite soil with traces of clay at 500- 750 m (1,640-2,460 ft) elevation. PAIRING SUGGESTIONS: Escalada do Sil Blanco will pair with roast poultry, mushrooms, and richer seafood dishes such as pulpo gallego, a classic local octopus dish. VINIFICATION AND AGEING: No skin contact or malolactic fermentation; wild yeast fermentation in 600L barrel.
