K VINTNERS & CHARLES SMITH WINES extremely limited production wines Charles Smith, El Presidente and Winemaker comes to Walla Walla after 11 years in Scandanavia. Originally from northern California, he has been involved with wine personally and professionally his whole life. K Vintners is producing wines from 2 distinctive viticultural zones: Wahluke Slope and Walla Walla Valley. Each of these areas are unique and awesome for Syrah and the Field Blends produced. In April 2002, two separate blocks of vineyards were planted to Syrah adjacent to the winery in the rocky dry creek beds that run through K Vintners property. K VINTNERS - FALL RELEASES K Vintners 2009 Viognier, Stoneridge Vineyard, Columbia Valley 12/750 Net $384 WA 93 Request____case(s) This is the first offering of this wine in Illinois. Located northeast of the Wahluke Slope AVA, across the Saddle Mountains, near Royal City. Very rocky soils,in fact six different kinds, make up the complex profile of aptly named Stoneridge. This windy site has naturally reduced yields and limited vigor encouraging robust, yet supple tannins that add to the aging potential to the wine. The thick-skinned fruit produces intense and wild aromatics. K Vintners 2010 ‘The Creator’ (Cabernet / Syrah), Walla Walla Valley - 12/750ml Net $480 Request____case(s) The Creator is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Syrah co-fermented and entirely from the Old Stones Vineyard. The Cabernet is Clone 4 and 6 and the Syrah is Phelps. The wine is open top fermented, native yeast, with whole cluster syrah on the bottom and de-stemmed cabernet over the top. The wine is aged in 50% new French oak for 18 months, made up of Sansaud, Boutes, Radoux and Taransaud barrels. K Vintners 2010 ‘The Deal’ Syrah, Sundance Vineyard, Wahluke Slope - 12/750ml Net $300 Request____case(s) The Sundance vineyard is one of the oldest on the Wahluke Slope, planted in 1997. The site is topsoil over gravel, sand and broken down basalt with more caliche than other sites in the Wahluke. The vineyard because of its aspect is also a later ripening site, allowing for great concentration. The wine is open top fermented with 50% stems and native yeast. Then the wine is aged for 18 months in 30 % new oak made up of Remond, Sirougue and Freret barrels. K Vintners 2010 Syrah, Cougar Hills Vineyard, Walla Walla Valley - 12/750ml Net $384 Request____case(s) This wine is sourced from the hillside portion of Cougar Hills vineyard, which is planted to the Phelps clone of Syrah. The soil is a composite of loam, river rock and gravel with a layer of volcanic ash about three feet below the soil surface. The vineyard also has cobbles and loam and was planted in 2000. All this lends to a dark, saline, oyster shell quality that is uniquely Walla Walla. The wine is open top fermented with native yeast, with 33% of stems intact. The wine is aged in 40% new oak, made up of Remond, Sirougue, and Freret barrels for 18 months. The cooler 2010 vintages brings a more floral elegant expression of Cougar Hills with under 15% alcohol. K Vintners 2010 Syrah, Old Stones Vineyard, Walla Walla Valley 12/750ml Net $450 Request____case(s) This is a new addition to K Vintners wines. The Old Stones Vineyard is located on the rocks in the old riverbed area of Walla Walla. Just 1/4th of a mile down from Cailloux, the vineyard is next to the River Rock Vineyard and is owned by Waters and farmed by Dana Dipple. The soil is cobblestones, and the low cordon and warm site give the wine a uniquely “rocks” character. The wine is open top fermented with native yeast and 50% stems. Then the wine is aged for 18 months in 40% new oak made up of Remond, Sirougue and Freret barrels. Cream Wine Company 118 N.
