AN INVESTIGATION OF INITIAL CRITERIA OF QING SCHOLARS’ “YISHENG ZHI ZHUAN” Kun Ma Miao Wang Sen Yat-Sen University Guangzhou University ls ABSTRACT a ri In the so-called “third great debates on phonology” in recent te years, there has been heated discussions on “yisheng zhi zhuan а༠ѻ䖜 a M (sound shift)” mentioned in the Guangya shuzheng, with a particular efocusd on the legitimacy of Wang Niansun’s theories on Chinese historicalht phonology. Wang Niansun followed the paradigm set up by Daiig Zhen in identifying cognate words. In Dai Zhen’s Fangyan shuzhengyr as well as Duan Yucai’s Shuowenjiezi zhu, there is a large number ofo “Zhuanyup 䖜䈝 (transmitted words)” materials. This paper collects: C the “Zhuanyu” materials from the three exegetical works above, analyzesss contact types of re initials, and discusses the different accounts P of Old Chinese initials proposed by Dai Zhen, Duan Yucai and Wangg Niansun, under the historical context between the reigns of Qianlongo nand Jiaqing. We find that 's view of Old Chinese initials Kwas not well received at that time. While Duan Yucai and Wangn gNiansun both adopted Dai Zhen’s “Shengzhuan theory ༠䖜䈤”, theyo made adjustments by prioritizing either H “zhengzhuan ↓䖜 (positiveof shifting)” or “bianzhuan ਈ䖜 (alternative shifting)”. This paper alsoy compares the different evaluations of textual evidence vis-à-vis phonologicalit theory in the exegetical studies of Dai, rs Duan and Huang,ve and analyzes disagreements between contact behaviors of initials andn Shengzhuani theories in their “Zhuanyu” materials. Our study clarifies misunderstandingsU about “yisheng zhi zhuan” and provides e insightses for reconstructing the academic history of traditional Chinese phonology.n hi C he KEYWORDS T Qing dynasty phonology Old Chinese initials “Shengzhuan” theory “Yisheng zhi zhuan”
