THE SCIROCCO

Exactly 40 years after ’s original Scirocco sports coupé made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, triggering a new era of design and paving the way for production of new vehicles which included the original Golf, the revised version of the third-generation Scirocco made its debut in Geneva in March 2014.

As part of its revision the Scirocco received a new range of advanced engines that offer a power output of up to 280 PS. Yet they also improve fuel efficiency compared to the previous units by up to 19 per cent.

Externally, the Scirocco’s shape was refined and modernised with new headlights and tail lights, as well as revised bumper styling. The front bumper features aerodynamic ‘blades’ in the outer section, like those on the latest-generation Golf GTI, with integrated indicator lights, daytime running lights and fog lights. On models with (optional) bi-xenon headlights, the daytime running lights are LEDs within the main headlight unit.

All Sciroccos have LED tail lights, while the bumper has been reshaped to appear lower and more purposeful. As on a Golf, the Volkswagen logo badge on the boot lid has an additional purpose: functioning as the tailgate release handle.

The range-topping Scirocco R has a distinct look, with bespoke bumpers and alloy wheels. It comes with 19-inch ‘Cadiz’ alloy wheels. The rest of the range also benefits from unique alloy wheel designs.

Under the bonnet are six turbocharged direct-injection petrol and diesel engines, all of which meet EU6 emissions standards and return between 67.3 and 35.3 mpg. Every model apart from the R is a BlueMotion Technology model, which means they come as standard with Start/Stop and also brake energy recuperation systems.

The petrol range consists of a 1.4-litre petrol with 125 PS (was 122 PS pre-facelift), and a 2.0-litre 180 PS unit which, at the time of the facelift, replaced the previous 1.4-litre 160 PS unit. Despite an increase in capacity and power, it is more economical than the 1.4-litre engine. The previous 2.0-litre TSI 210 PS was also replaced, with a 220 PS unit that is also 19 per cent more fuel efficient. And the Scirocco R uses a 2.0-litre unit producing 280 PS.

The two diesel engines are both 2.0-litre units, with either 150 PS or 184 PS (up from 140 and 177), and up to 67.3 mpg.

The entry-level 1.4-litre TSI 125 PS car comes with a six-speed manual gearbox; all other engines come with a standard six-speed manual gearbox with the option of a six-speed DSG gearbox.

Inside, the dashboard features an auxiliary instrument cluster above the centre console, consisting of a chronometer, charge pressure and oil temperature gauges – a tribute to the 1974 model.

Five trim levels are available in the UK: Scirocco, GT, R-Line, GTS and R. Additionally there are the GT Black Edition and R-Line Black Edition models. The entry level Scirocco comes with Volkswagen’s Composition Media system with a 6.5-inch touch-screen. It includes a DAB digital radio with CD player; SD card reader; Multi-Device Interface and Bluetooth telephone connection. Manual air conditioning also features, alongside automatic headlights and wipers; an auto-dimming rear view mirror; 17-inch ‘Long Beach’ alloy wheels; height-adjustable sports ; and a multifunction leather-covered steering wheel (with paddleshifts on DSG models).

The GT model adds the Discover Navigation touch-screen navigation system; 2Zone climate control; dark-tinted rear windows; 18-inch ‘Interlagos’ alloy wheels; front fog lights; front and rear parking sensors; a black roof lining; chequered flag dash inserts; aluminium-look pedals and Alcantara upholstery.

The R-Line model comes with R-Line-specific bumpers and side skirts; 19-inch ‘Talladega’ alloy wheels; R-Line scuff plates; an R-Line-specific steering wheel, handbrake and gearlever; ‘Carbon- look’ dash inserts; and heated, electrically adjustable ‘Vienna’ leather sports seats.

The Scirocco GTS went on sale in the UK in January 2016 and adds 18-inch ‘Hayden’ alloy wheels and optional ‘GTS’ decals. ‘GTS’ design front and rear bumpers contrast with ‘Red’ brake calipers and ‘GTS’ badging on the radiator grille and rear tailgate. Chrome door sill protectors also feature the ‘GTS’ logo, with ‘Piano Black’ inserts in dash and centre console. Red stitching on the gear gaitor contrasts with the ‘GTS’ golf ball design gear knob.

The top of the range Scirocco R comes with its own unique exterior styling kit; chrome-look door mirror caps; bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights; 19-inch ‘Cadiz’ alloy wheels; black brake calipers with ‘R’ logo; sports suspension (lowered by 10 mm); DCC Dynamic Chassis Control and the XDS electronic differential lock for increased traction.

Production The Scirocco is produced at Volkswagen’s Autoeuropa plant in Palmela, Portugal, alongside the Sharan people carrier. It is one of Europe’s most up-to-date automotive plants, employing around 3,400 people (in 2016) and occupying a total area of 2,000,000 square metres. has 59 Portuguese suppliers, 15 of which are located on the factory site which guarantees an efficient and highly-developed components supply system.

In 2015 the Palmela plant produced approximately 102,200 vehicles including the Scirocco, Sharan and the SEAT Alhambra. Palmela has a state-of-the-art press shop, body shell shop, paintshop and final assembly line.

Autoeuropa has been operational since April 1995. It was established in 1991 following a collaboration between Volkswagen and Ford. Ford took responsibility for factory planning and purchasing and Volkswagen for vehicle development. At the time this was the biggest foreign investment project in Portugal. Since 1999 the Palmela plant has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Volkswagen AG.

The Scirocco was assigned to Autoeuropa in 2008, the year when the plant achieved the milestone of 1,500,000 vehicles. Volkswagen Autoeuropa celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2016.

Environment Ecological considerations and the responsible handling of natural resources are central to the Volkswagen corporate philosophy. Long before the European Used Car Directive and the resulting national legislation came into force, Volkswagen had set itself a number of environmental objectives, including the reduction of CO₂ emissions and effective recycling methods.

As well as optimising its vehicle assembly technology, Volkswagen continues to lead in the introduction of new methods to streamline the recycling of plastics, and is developing ever-more stringent processes for the efficient handling of resources such as water, energy and materials.

Autoeuropa received its ISO 14001 environmental certification early, and has supported its main suppliers in obtaining their environmental accreditations too.

In planning the plant, special attention was paid to protection of soil and groundwater. All pipelines through which potentially dangerous substances are transported are installed above ground level. Tanks which are set into the soil are fitted with double-skinned walls and leak detection devices.

In the case of waste handling, choice of processes and packaging, great emphasis has been placed on factors such as recycling and volume minimisation. Waste reduction targets have also been set. The plant uses recyclable packaging for most vehicle parts, while the remaining packaging waste and other materials such as paper, cardboard, plastics, wood or metals are separated then sold to specialist recycling companies. All areas used for temporary storage of waste are sealed, insulated and connected to a waste water treatment plant.

DESIGN

Exterior In 2008 the Scirocco was the first Volkswagen to exhibit the new ‘face’ of the brand and marked a new era of design. The car was designed by a team led by Klaus Bischoff, Head of Volkswagen Design, plus Marc Lichte, and overseen by Walter de Silva, Group Head of Design, and draws inspiration from the original Iroc concept which was shown at the Paris Motor Show in September 2006.

Deep front airdams and a razor-thin grille element with gloss black insert are framed by distinctive chrome-backed headlight units. Also of note: the Volkswagen roundel is not in its traditional position in the grille but rather on the bonnet.

Further back, pronounced haunches that sweep over the rear wheelarches are accentuated by a tapered sill line that pinches around the middle of the vehicle. These haunches flow into the slim high intensity rear light units and a wide hatchback boot, on top of which is a subtle aerodynamic wing. The Scirocco has frameless doors, a feature that further accentuates the car’s sporting credentials.

Although configured to appear low and wide, the Scirocco’s designers moved away from using a traditional coupé’s sloping roof. Instead the Scirocco has a steep hatch with a long roof and vertical tailgate, which brings two key advantages. The first is in design where the car’s unusual proportions give it a squat but purposeful appearance; the second and arguably more important, is that the upright rear and short overhangs give the Scirocco substantial space in the rear for two adults plus luggage. This means the car is not only stylish but is also practical, and capable of seating four above- average-height adults in comfort.

Interior Four sculpted sports seats offer comfort and support for all four passengers, while non-detachable headrests ensure safety at all times for rear seat occupants. A generous amount of interior space is also afforded by these seats. As they are positioned low in the car in true sports coupé style, they allow interior heights of 953 mm in the front and 924 mm rear meaning ample headroom is available.

The rear seats can also be split (50:50) and folded to increase cargo space when necessary. A maximum 1006 litres is available in the Scirocco.

For convenience, the front seats offer rear passengers easy entry and exit to the back seats. When unlatched, they not only tip but also slide forward to maximise entry room. However, when they are put back, they automatically return to their previously set positions, meaning driver and passenger do not have to readjust their seats. Naturally the two front seats are adjustable for height and reach, as is the steering wheel, while a 12-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support is offered as an option with leather upholstery.

In the cabin, the driver is treated to clear, easy-to-read displays with chrome-ringed and white backlit dials, plus ergonomically-designed switchgear. In the base Scirocco trim, Volkswagen’s dash- mounted Composition Media system with 6.5-inch colour touch-screen gives easy access to all stereo functions, and includes a DAB digital radio, CD player, SD card reader and Multi Device Interface connection for external multimedia sources, for example an iPod or MP3 player.

All other trims come with the Discover Navigation unit with hard disc-supported navigation system as standard. The system’s hard disc drive allows routes to be recorded while driving and re-traced, even over terrain where there are no roads, and songs can be stored and re-played.

Other design features include a contoured, flat-bottomed multifunction sports steering wheel and distinctive triangular grab handles on the doors. The interior is light, airy and surprisingly roomy, while the option of an electrically-operated tilting panoramic sunroof emphasises the feeling of spaciousness. In the top centre of the dashboard is a pod containing three sports instrument dials: oil temperature, turbo boost pressure and a chronometer.

Like the exterior, the interior of the Scirocco R clearly bears the hallmark of . Individualised features include ‘Race’ seat covers with the ‘R’ logo and decorative stitching in crystal grey, a black headlining, decorative ‘Carbon Race’ inlays, applications in glossy ‘Piano Black’ (radio bezel, multifunction leather sport steering wheel and door handles) and stainless steel pedals. Traditionally, the specific ‘R’ instrument needles are blue and the aluminium door sill plates are complemented by an ‘R’ logo.

The Scirocco is available with a choice of four petrol and two diesel engines. These comprise a 1.4- litre TSI turbocharged petrol unit producing 125 PS; a 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged unit with 180 PS, 220 PS or 280 PS; and a 2.0-litre common rail TDI turbodiesel unit with 150 or 184 PS.

BlueMotion Technology All Sciroccos other than the top of the range R model come with BlueMotion Technology (often referred to as BMT). These power units have a variety of measures incorporated that help to reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions.

BlueMotion Technology models are a range of vehicles developed by Volkswagen that strike a balance between the highly focussed BlueMotion-designated vehicles (in the Polo, Golf and Passat ranges) and the conventional products on which they are based. carrying ‘BlueMotion Technology’ badging combine efficiency with comfort and equipment to create vehicles that deliver greater economy and produce fewer emissions yet remain practical and stylish as well as conventional to drive, service and maintain.

The breadth of BlueMotion Technology modifications varies from range to range. In the Scirocco, it incorporates Start/Stop and battery regeneration systems, as well as low rolling resistance tyres. The battery regeneration system is designed to help utilise energy that would otherwise be lost during braking. In deceleration and braking phases, the alternator’s voltage is boosted and used for bulk recharging of the car’s battery. Thanks to alternator control, it is possible to lower alternator voltage, for example during deceleration or driving at constant speed. It is even possible to switch off the alternator entirely which reduces engine load and improves fuel consumption.

The Scirocco’s automatic Start/Stop system is operated through the clutch pedal. When coming to a halt at traffic lights, for example, the driver depresses the clutch and selects neutral. When the clutch is released, the engine shuts down and a ‘Start/Stop’ symbol illuminates on the multifunction display. In order to move away, the driver simply depresses the clutch once again to select first gear and the engine restarts automatically. The system can be deactivated through a switch, if necessary.

TSI petrol engine technology The TSI name represents all of Volkswagen’s pioneering forced-induction petrol engines which are available in the Scirocco. These engines produce high levels of power with low emissions from a relatively small capacity.

Petrol engines

1.4-litre TSI, 1395 cc, 16-valve 4-cyl, 125 PS For those looking for power with impressive economy the Scirocco is available with a turbocharged 1.4-litre TSI with 125 PS from 5,000 – 6,000 rpm and maximum of 200 Nm (148 lbs ft) from 1,400 rpm to 4,000 rpm. This engine, which is offered only with a six-speed manual gearbox, enables a top speed of 126 mph and 0 to 62 mph in 9.3 seconds. Economy is high on the agenda with a combined consumption of 52.3 mpg and CO₂ output of 125 g/km.

2.0-litre TSI, 1,984 cc, 16-valve 4-cyl, 180 PS Codenamed EA888, this has a new cylinder head design which, uniquely for this power class, has a water-cooled exhaust gas circulation loop to the turbocharger that is fully integrated in the cylinder head. This type of exhaust gas cooling makes a crucial contribution towards improving fuel consumption at full load. In addition, the 1,984 cc TSI features variable valve timing with dual camshaft adjustment. The valve lift on the exhaust side is adjustable over two stages. This enables optimal control of the charge exchange process for better performance, fuel economy and low emissions.

This 2.0-litre TSI engine produces 180 PS from 4,600 rpm to 6,200 rpm, and 280 Nm (207 lbs ft) of torque from just 1,250 to 4,500 rpm. The 0 to 62 mph sprint takes 7.4 seconds, and the top speed is 141 mph (140 mph DSG).

With the standard manual six-speed gearbox, combined fuel economy is 46.3 mpg and CO₂ emissions are 142 g/km. With the optional six-speed DSG gearbox, combined economy is 44.1 mpg and carbon dioxide emissions are 148 g/km.

2.0-litre TSI, 1,984 cc, 16-valve 4-cyl, 220 PS Codenamed EA888, this is the same engine used in the Golf GTI. It has a new cylinder head design which, uniquely for this power class, has a water-cooled exhaust gas circulation loop to the turbocharger that is fully integrated in the cylinder head. This type of exhaust gas cooling makes a crucial contribution towards improving fuel consumption at full load. In addition, the 1,984 cc TSI features variable valve timing with dual camshaft adjustment. The valve lift on the exhaust side is adjustable over two stages. This enables optimal control of the charge exchange process for better performance, economy and emissions.

This 2.0-litre TSI engine produces 220 PS from 4,500 rpm, and 350 Nm (258 lbs ft) of torque from just 1,500 to 4,400 rpm. The 0 to 62 mph sprint takes 6.5 seconds, and the top speed is 153 mph (152 mph DSG). With the standard manual six-speed gearbox, combined fuel economy is 46.3 mpg and CO₂ emissions are 142 g/km. With the optional six-speed DSG gearbox, combined economy is 44.1 mpg and carbon dioxide emissions are 148 g/km.

2.0-litre TSI, 1,984 cc, 16-valve 4-cyl, 280 PS This is similar to the engine used in the new Golf R. It has a cylinder head with a water-cooled exhaust gas circulation loop to the turbocharger that is fully integrated in the cylinder head. This makes a crucial contribution towards improving fuel consumption at full load. In addition, the 1,984 cc TSI features variable valve timing with dual camshaft adjustment. The valve lift on the exhaust side is adjustable over two stages. This enables optimal control of the charge exchange process for better performance, fuel economy and low emissions.

With the standard manual six-speed gearbox, combined fuel economy is 35.3 mpg and CO₂ emissions are 187 g/km. With the optional six-speed DSG gearbox, combined economy is 35.8 mpg and carbon dioxide emissions are 185 g/km.

Diesel engines Sine 2014 the Scirocco has used a new series of diesel engines – called EA288 – which were introduced with the Golf Mk VII. The only dimension of the Scirocco’s four-cylinder diesels that has been carried over from the previous generation is the cylinder spacing.

To fulfil various emissions standards worldwide, an oxidation catalytic converter, diesel particulate filter and NOx storage catalytic converter are all implemented in the Scirocco. All, for example, comply with EU6 emissions legislation. Various other design modifications optimise fuel economy and comfort significantly as well. Volkswagen has tuned all sub-assemblies of the new TDI engine for minimal internal friction. These elements include piston rings with less pre-tension and the use of low-friction bearings for the camshaft (drive-side) and for the two balancer shafts. In the oil circulation loop, energy usage was optimised by an oil pump with volumetric flow control.

During the TDI’s warm-up phase, an innovative thermal management system utilises separate cooling circulation loops for the cylinder head and the cylinder block as well as a deactivatable water pump, meaning operating temperatures are reached considerably faster. One additional benefit of this is that the interior of the Scirocco also gets warmer more quickly in the winter. Another independently controlled cooling loop enables on-demand control of inlet air temperature with additional emissions control benefits.

9

The new diesels not only have very low emissions, high fuel-efficiency and torque, but they also run very smoothly for optimum refinement. This is achieved in a number of ways, for example, the 2.0- litre TDI 150 PS employs two low-friction bearings in its balancer shafts to eliminate free out of balance forces that are a characteristic of any piston engine systems.

2.0-litre TDI, 1968, 16-valve 4-cyl, 150 PS This new 2.0-litre engine produces 150 PS (10 PS more than the equivalent engine in the previous generation) from 3,500 to 4,000 rpm, and 340 Nm (251 lbs ft) of torque from just 1,750 up to 3,000 rpm. Customers choosing this engine can opt for a six-speed manual or DSG gearbox. The 150 PS completes the 0 to 62 mph sprint in 8.6 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 134 mph (132 mph DSG). Performance is impressive but does not come at the expense of economy. Combined economy is 67.3 mpg (62.8 DSG) with a carbon dioxide output of 109 g/km (119 DSG).

2.0-litre TDI, 1968, 16-valve 4-cyl, 184 PS This 2.0-litre diesel engine, shared with the Golf GTD, produces 184 PS, which is 7 PS more than in the pre-facelifted Scirocco. Maximum torque has risen from 350 Nm (258 lbs ft) in the previous model to 380 Nm (280 lbs ft) from just 1,750 rpm.

Acceleration from zero to 62 mph takes just 7.5 seconds. While the top speed is 143 mph (142 DSG), this Scirocco consumes just one gallon of fuel every 60.1 miles, making for CO₂ emissions of only 124 g/km. With the optional six-speed DSG, fuel consumption is 58.9 mpg and CO₂ emissions 125 g/km.

Gearboxes

DSG – Direct Shift Gearbox Volkswagen’s Direct Shift Gearbox was a true innovation, combining the comfort of an automatic gearbox with the performance and economy of a manual unit.

The six-speed, transversely mounted DSG unit has two wet clutches with hydraulic pressure regulation. One clutch controls the ‘odd’ gears plus reverse, while the other operates the ‘even’ gears. Essentially it is two gearboxes in one.

This combination enables the next-higher gear ratio to remain engaged but on standby until it is actually selected. In other words, if the car is being driven in third gear, fourth is selected but not yet activated. As soon as the ideal shift point is reached, the clutch on the third-gear side opens, the other clutch closes and fourth gear engages under accurate electronic supervision.

Since the opening and closing actions of the two clutches overlap, a smooth gearshift results and the entire shift process is completed in less than four-hundredths of a second. In addition to its fully automatic shift mode, DSG has a tiptronic function to permit manual gear selection.

With this clutch management system, interruptions in power that are typical of even an automatic- shift manual gearbox no longer occur. This is achieved by a hydraulic and electronic (mechatronic) gearbox control system, the two wet-type clutches and the two input and output shafts in each half of the gearbox. The materials used for the friction surfaces are similar to those used in conventional automatic transmissions and are designed to last the life of the vehicle.

All gearboxes in the Scirocco are filled with lifetime oil and need no routine maintenance.

Servicing

Volkswagen offers customers a choice of servicing regime for their Scirocco. They can choose Fixed Service or Flexible Service and the appropriate selection is entirely dependent on how the car is likely to be driven and its general use.

The Fixed Service regime is recommended for vehicles that will cover less than 10,000 miles in 12 months and if the vehicle is to be used in the following way:

 Predominantly urban driving, short journeys with frequent cold starts  Activities regularly producing high engine loading, for example frequent hill climbs and driving with vehicle fully loaded  Driving with high rpm, hard acceleration and heavy braking

In this case, the vehicle will be serviced at regular intervals, at every 10,000 miles or every 12 months.

Flexible Service is recommended for vehicles with a daily mileage of more than 25 miles, where the vehicle is driven regularly and on mainly longer distance journeys. The vehicle should be mainly driven at a constant speed with minimum vehicle and engine loading, minimal towing and driven in an economical manner. In this case, the on-board computer informs the driver via a dashboard display, when the vehicle needs a service. A range of engine sensors electronically monitors the vehicle’s oil temperature, oil pressure, oil level and brake pad wear to establish when a service is needed.

With the Flexible regime, the vehicle can cover typically between 10,000 and 20,000 miles (approx.) or 24 months (whichever is sooner) between oil changes. An inspection service is typically due in the third year of ownership or after 20,000 miles and thereafter every one year or 20,000 miles.

Customers can choose between Fixed and Flexible at PDI (pre-delivery inspection) and though it is possible to change from one to another during the vehicle’s life, it can only be done when a full inspection service is due.

RUNNING GEAR

The Scirocco’s suspension system uses strut-type suspension at the front and a multi-link layout at the rear. A McPherson axle at the front ensures precise tracking and balanced comfort properties. A four-link axle at the rear rises to the challenge of providing both sportiness and comfort. What's more, the Scirocco is optionally available with Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC). The permanent electric control of the damping solves the conflict between a firm, sporty and a comfortable set-up.

The Scirocco has a very low centre of gravity which presents some challenges. One of these is to retain adequate headroom for the occupants within the low overall vehicle height. Part of the solution is the incorporation of the tailgate hinges inside blisters in the roof, thereby allowing the roofline to be lowered and enhancing the dynamic appearance of the Scirocco without compromising practicality.

The wide track is a characteristic feature of the Scirocco: 1,569 millimetres at the front and 1,575 millimetres at the rear. The rear track is therefore one of the widest in the competitive environment. Aluminium hub carriers are fitted on the rear axle to extend the track and reduce the unsprung mass.

With high agility the running gear has been configured to ensure maximum stability and driving safety for the Scirocco. The standard 17-inch tyres, with standard dimensions 225/45, have also been integrated in this concept; they support the high maximum transverse dynamics that can be achieved by the sports car.

Dynamic Chassis Control – DCC Engineers have in the past been constrained to design a suspension system which is biased either towards comfort or sportiness, always resulting in some form of compromise. The ideal, it was decided, would be to produce a chassis that could continually adapt to road conditions and the particular wishes of the driver or passengers. This has been achieved for the Scirocco, which features an optional Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) system (standard on the Scirocco R). Here not only can the suspension’s damping characteristics be controlled at the touch of a button, but the electro- mechanical power steering and accelerator response are also modified at the same time.

DCC operates via a set of four electrically adjustable dampers. Each damper is fitted with characteristic map control, a gateway control module that serves as an interface with the Controller Area Network data networks in the Scirocco – these comprise three sensors for measuring wheel displacement, three sensors for measuring movements of the body structure and a control module for the damping.

These sensors constantly measure the vehicle’s behaviour – be it under braking, acceleration or cornering – and react almost instantaneously to assure the optimum mix of chassis agility and comfort at all times. The vehicle defaults to ‘Normal’ mode in which the system strikes a balance for general use. Should the driver select ‘Sport’ mode the steering assistance is reduced, the damping is hardened and the throttle responses are sharpened as the mapping changes. This is intended for either twisty roads or track driving. In ‘Comfort’ the damping is softened and the steering assistance is increased to provide a smooth and controlled ride best suited to motorway driving.

Electro-mechanical power steering An electro-mechanical power steering system is employed on the Scirocco. Unlike some systems, it is able to vary the feel of the steering wheel to suit the speed and driving situation: firm and direct when driving hard, effortless at parking speeds. Other advantages of the system include its mild self- centring action, its ability to compensate for different driving hazards, like crosswinds and steep road cambers, and a beneficial effect on fuel economy, as it dispenses with the usual engine driven pump. Specifically for the Scirocco, an especially-programmed map is used which offers stronger self- aligning and somewhat higher steering forces to give the driver more ‘feel’.

Also new when the Scirocco was facelifted was the electro-mechanical steering gear: the steering angle sensor, utilised by both the electro-mechanical steering system and Electronic Stabilisation Control (ESC), was integrated in the pinion gear housing for the first time. That meant it no longer needed to be housed in the steering column switch module, thereby improving sensor quality.

Braking system The Scirocco features a sophisticated braking system, with ABS and ESC (Electronic Stabilisation Control) standard across the range. Ventilated discs are fitted at the front (diameter 312 mm) with solid discs at the rear (253 mm).

The brake system has been modified to suit the higher performance of the Scirocco R. Instead of a 16-inch system, a 17-inch system is fitted with internally ventilated discs and R-specific brake callipers painted gloss black delivering superior deceleration figures. The front discs have a diameter of 345 mm, the rear discs 310 mm.

Electronic Stabilisation Control – ESC The latest-generation ESC system has a range of features designed to have a direct and positive effect on active safety. The Scirocco R is also fitted with XDS electronic differential lock for improved traction and handling.

Essentially, ESC is a sophisticated system that automatically senses any tendency for the car to slide. Should this situation occur, ESC reacts by applying the brakes to one, two, three or all four wheels and adjusts the engine’s power. In this way, it is possible that a skid is corrected even before the driver is aware that one has started.

This can be useful if a tendency to understeer or oversteer develops in a bend. In such circumstances ESC can help prevent the car skidding or spinning off the road and is particularly helpful in wet or icy conditions.

XDS – Scirocco R only Technically speaking, XDS is a functional extension of the Electronic Limited-slip Differential (EDL) which is a part of the standard ESC system.

Its benefits are experienced when driving quickly through a bend. ESC sensors provide information on lateral G forces, while ABS sensors monitor levels of friction. Using this information a control unit can predict when an inside wheel is about to lift and apply a braking force automatically to increase traction on the opposite front wheel. The result is smoother, more sure-footed and safer progress with better traction through fast corners when on the limit of adhesion. XDS also compensates for the understeer which is typical of front-wheel drive cars.

Hydraulic Brake Assist – HBA Working in conjunction with the other elements of the braking system, HBA recognises from the speed at which the brake pedal is depressed whether it is a ‘normal’ braking situation or an emergency stop. In the event of an emergency stop, HBA automatically increases braking pressure, activating ABS and ensuring the level of braking meets the needs of the conditions. The application of brake assist makes it possible even for unskilled drivers to reduce braking distances by around 25 per cent.

Hill hold function All Scirocco models feature a hill-hold function as standard. This prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards in the initial moments of setting off on a hill.

The Scirocco GTS

There has been a Scirocco GTS before, in 1982, and that coupé was also related to the Golf GTI of its time, both technically and visually. The Scirocco was recognisable by a strikingly designed GTS stripe (which ran all round the silhouette of the car just above the sill), its distinctive sport seats and a gear knob in golf ball design. The GTI had the same sport seats (with different upholstery) and the golf ball gear knob. Today, the situation is similar. The Scirocco GTS marks the comeback of an icon, a straight- forward, mighty fast and exclusively-equipped sports car.

The Scirocco GTS went on sale in the UK in January 2016 and is equipped as standard with new 18-inch ‘Hayden’ alloy wheels; the popular 19-inch ‘Lugano’ alloy wheels are available as an option. The red brake callipers of the GTS can be seen through the spokes of both of these wheel options. In addition, the Scirocco GTS comes with the R-Line styling package as standard, which includes distinctive R-style bumpers (at the front with integrated fog lamps and glossy black radiator and air inlet grilles), custom side sill extensions, a roof spoiler (also R-style) and a diffuser.

The wing mirror caps are painted in stylish black and, just like its predecessor, the ‘82 Scirocco GTS, the new model can be ordered with a sporty GTS decal for the body as an option (standard in China). This option features two decorative red stripes that run centrally from the bonnet over the roof and the boot (if the car is painted in ‘Flash Red’ the stripes are black). The new Scirocco is also enhanced by 3D GTS logos in the radiator grille and on the tailgate. The Scirocco GTS can be ordered in six colours: ‘Deep Black’, ‘Indium Grey’, ‘Urano Grey’, ‘Pure White’, ‘Oryx White’ and, as already mentioned, ‘Flash Red’.

As an option, the Scirocco GTS can also be ordered with black ‘Vienna’ leather upholstery; here again the seats are customised with decorative red seams. Volkswagen also offers features such as the transparent panoramic tilt sunroof, bi-xenon headlights, a multifunction steering wheel and the Discover Navigation DAB radio and navigation infotainment system.

FACTORY-FIT OPTIONS

A number of factory- and retailer-fit options are available on the Scirocco allowing buyers to customise further their vehicles. Highlights include an electric tilting panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, alternative alloy wheels, Park Assist, exterior badge deletion and various satellite navigation options.

Panoramic tilt sunroof Enhancing the cabin’s spacious and airy feel is the option of a panoramic sunroof. This electrically powered and transparent roof extends from the A- to the B- pillars and can tilt open up to 39 mm at the press of a button. It also includes a sunshade to reduce glare. However the sunroof is made of specially designed safety glass which only transmits 8.2 per cent of the UV radiation, 2.8 per cent of the infrared radiation (heat) and 6.9 per cent of the visible light.

It should also be noted that the low-profile design of the panoramic sunroof does not reduce headroom; in fact the lack of a roof liner in the area of the glass section frees up more space than would normally be available.

Gas discharge bi-xenon headlights These ultra-efficient gas discharge (bi-xenon) headlights provide a well-focused, blue-white light approximately two and a half times more powerful than standard lights, and come with a self- levelling mechanism. This option, standard on the Scirocco R, also incorporates static curve lighting to provide better visibility around bends.

Parking sensors (standard from GT) Also available on the Scirocco is a parking distance control system which simplifies tight parking manoeuvres. The system uses eight ultrasonic sensors (four integrated in the front bumper and four in the rear bumper) to pinpoint parked vehicles, or other objects behind the car.

Automatically activated when reverse gear is selected, the system produces an audible warning signal as well as a visual guide on the infotainment screen to guide the driver up to a safe distance to any objects behind. Not only does this help to avoid car park knocks, it could also prevent accidents, for example, if a child runs out who may not have been seen. A reversing camera is also available as an option.

Discover Navigation touch-screen satellite navigation/radio system The ‘Scirocco’ trim is equipped with the Composition Media system. But from GT trim and up the Scirocco comes as standard with Volkswagen’s Discover Navigation satellite navigation system. This uses a 6.5-inch touchscreen for fast, intuitive operation of the entertainment and navigation menus and displaying of information. Key features include a DAB radio, CD player and an integrated SD memory card reader from which files can be retrieved.

The navigation function offers a moving 2D or 3D map in the colour display panel, integrated direction symbols as well as spoken instructions. Route choices are Fast, Short and Eco.

A three-year subscription to Volkswagen’s Car-Net ‘Guide and Inform’ is included. This provides access to a range of useful information such as traffic, fuel pricing, parking space availability, weather and news feeds.

For the navigation to function, rear ABS wheel sensors are used to determine the distance the car has covered and to provide information when the car is turning. Further system components include a solid state magnetic compass concealed under the roof and a three-way roof aerial for radio and GPS (Global Positioning System). The aerial receives signals from the satellites in orbit from which the system is able to calculate the position of the car on the surface of the earth.

Dynaudio Excite sound system A 300 watt premium entertainment system from Danish hi-fi specialist Dynaudio provides exceptional sound quality especially compared with other systems in the Scirocco’s market sector. The eight- channel system delivers up to a true 300 watts RMS without generating unwanted vibrations in the vehicle structure.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

The Scirocco has an extremely rigid body structure, energy absorbing deformation zones all around, and restraint systems devised to suit its performance.

The combination of a highly rigid occupant cell and deformation zones is a prerequisite for good crash performance. The concept applied to the Scirocco is profile-intensive lightweight construction with cold-worked, high-strength sheet metal. All real tests and computer simulations confirm that the steel body designed in shell construction offers optimal protection even under difficult crash conditions.

As a further safety feature, when the airbags and belt tensioners are triggered at a specific load via a central Electronic Control Unit (ECU), the hazard lights are activated, the doors are unlocked, the interior lights are turned on and the fuel pump is shut off.

The Scirocco was tested by EuroNCAP in 2009, when it achieved a five-star rating, with 87 per cent for adult occupant protection, 73 per cent for child occupant protection and 71 per cent for safety assist systems.

Pedestrian protection A key aim in the development of the Scirocco was to achieve maximum pedestrian protection. All relevant components at the front of the vehicle were adapted to achieve this objective. Engineers paid particular attention to the bonnet, for example to optimise the hinge area for pedestrian protection. Also contributing here is a newly designed foam piece mounted behind the bumper facia, whose soft consistency reduces the severity of leg injuries.

Six airbags and optimal safety for children Besides its highly safe body structure, the car’s standard front, side and curtain airbags also make the Scirocco one of the safest cars in its class. The front passenger airbag can be deactivated using the ignition key in the glovebox, enabling a child to be transported safely in a rear-facing seat. Child safety is supplemented by standard Isofix mounting fixtures on both rear seats.

Belt-up request As with all new Volkswagen models, the Scirocco is fitted with a control system which requests driver and front passenger to fasten their seatbelts by means of visual and acoustic warnings. The ‘seatbelt reminder system’ is activated from speeds exceeding around 6 mph.

Safety-optimised head restraints Driver and passenger seats are also fitted with safety-optimised head restraints, which move towards the head in the event of a rear collision, thus reducing the risk of neck injury. Additionally, seatbelt pre-tensioners in the front ensure that they are in the best possible position immediately after impact but before the occupants begin to move forwards.

HISTORY

The origins of the Volkswagen coupé For Volkswagen, the first generation of the Scirocco marked the beginning of a new era. Just a few months after the world premiere of the Passat, and shortly before the launch of the first generation Golf, the successor to the Karmann Ghia marked the end of Volkswagens with boxer engines and rear-mounted engines in Europe. At the same time, the Scirocco contributed to general acceptance of a new production system – the modular principle that would soon cause a revolution in the automotive sector.

In launching the original Scirocco Volkswagen was said to have democratised the sports car, becoming the first manufacturer to offer an affordable, fuel-efficient and – thanks to front-wheel drive – truly safe coupé.

In 2016, just as it was in 1974, the Scirocco is an all-round sports car, thanks to its four full-size seats, reasonable bootspace and practical hatchback. It is precisely this list of attributes that won over hundreds of thousands of car drivers to the original Scirocco. By the time production of the Scirocco ceased in 1992, 795,650 units had been sold worldwide.

Scirocco in the UK Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro and assembled by Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany, the original Scirocco coupé arrived in the UK in 1974.

The engine line-up started with the modest 1.3-litre, four cylinder unit developing 60 bhp. By the time the model ceased production in 1993 it was powered by a 1.8-litre 16v engine developing a more substantial 139 bhp to raise the top speed to 129 mph and completed the 0 to 62 mph dash to 8.1 seconds.

The Mk I Scirocco marked the debut of the iconic wedge shape that would be carried over in slightly smoothed off form – dropping the coefficient of drag from 0.42 to 0.38 in the process – for the Mk II vehicle which broke cover in 1981. Despite the visual similarities the Mk II Scirocco featured an all-new chassis as well as an updated interior and engines.

Over two generations and 19 years, a total of 77,460 Sciroccos were sold in the UK alone. In this time various special editions and performance models were offered including the GLI, GTI, the Storm in 1984 and the 16v GTX in 1985.

In 1989 the Corrado model was introduced. Sitting above the Scirocco range the Corrado adopted its wedge styling in a completely new chassis featuring active aerodynamics in the form of a rear wing that rose at speeds of over 45 mph. Featuring a choice of three new engines topped by the 2.9-litre 190 bhp VR6 unit the Corrado went on to replace the Scirocco in 1993 as the coupé in the Volkswagen range when sales ceased. The UK accounted for 10,155 sales of the Corrado between 1989 and 1996.

Even before launch in 2008, the new Scirocco proved extremely popular with more than 11,000 potential customers signing up to receive email updates about the new vehicle via the Volkswagen website three months prior to the car going on sale.

In May 2008, a race car based on the road-going Scirocco, named the GT24, raced to success in its class at the Nürburgring 24-hour endurance rance and was invited to participate in the Supercar Run at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July of that year. With 325 PS, significantly altered dimensions and carbon fibre panels, the GT24 delighted crowds throughout the Festival and paved the way for a successful market introduction of the road car in September.

The new Scirocco launched in the UK in September 2008, when it was available with just one engine and one trim level: the 2.0-litre TSI with 200 PS in GT specification. It was joined by two 1.4-litre TSI petrol units – with either 122 PS or 160 PS – and two 2.0-litre common rail TDI diesels with 140 or 177 PS, along with a lower trim level.
