As part of its revision the Scirocco received a new range of advanced engines that offer a power output of up to 280 PS. Yet they also improve fuel efficiency compared to the previous units by up to 19 per cent. Externally, the Scirocco’s shape was refined and modernised with new headlights and tail lights, as well as revised bumper styling. The front bumper features aerodynamic ‘blades’ in the outer section, like those on the latest-generation Golf GTI, with integrated indicator lights, daytime running lights and fog lights. On models with (optional) bi-xenon headlights, the daytime running lights are LEDs within the main headlight unit. All Sciroccos have LED tail lights, while the bumper has been reshaped to appear lower and more purposeful. As on a Golf, the Volkswagen logo badge on the boot lid has an additional purpose: functioning as the tailgate release handle. The range-topping Scirocco R has a distinct look, with bespoke bumpers and alloy wheels. It comes with 19-inch ‘Cadiz’ alloy wheels. The rest of the range also benefits from unique alloy wheel designs. Under the bonnet are six turbocharged direct-injection petrol and diesel engines, all of which meet EU6 emissions standards and return between 67.3 and 35.3 mpg. Every model apart from the R is a BlueMotion Technology model, which means they come as standard with Start/Stop and also brake energy recuperation systems. The petrol range consists of a 1.4-litre petrol with 125 PS (was 122 PS pre-facelift), and a 2.0-litre 180 PS unit which, at the time of the facelift, replaced the previous 1.4-litre 160 PS unit. Despite an increase in capacity and power, it is more economical than the 1.4-litre engine. The previous 2.0-litre TSI 210 PS was also replaced, with a 220 PS unit that is also 19 per cent more fuel efficient. And the Scirocco R uses a 2.0-litre unit producing 280 PS. The two diesel engines are both 2.0-litre units, with either 150 PS or 184 PS (up from 140 and 177), and up to 67.3 mpg. The entry-level 1.4-litre TSI 125 PS car comes with a six-speed manual gearbox; all other engines come with a standard six-speed manual gearbox with the option of a six-speed DSG gearbox. Inside, the dashboard features an auxiliary instrument cluster above the centre console, consisting of a chronometer, charge pressure and oil temperature gauges – a tribute to the 1974 model. Five trim levels are available in the UK: Scirocco, GT, R-Line, GTS and R. Additionally there are the GT Black Edition and R-Line Black Edition models. The entry level Scirocco comes with Volkswagen’s Composition Media system with a 6.5-inch touch-screen. It includes a DAB digital radio with CD player; SD card reader; Multi-Device Interface and Bluetooth telephone connection. Manual air conditioning also features, alongside automatic headlights and wipers; an auto-dimming rear view mirror; 17-inch ‘Long Beach’ alloy wheels; height-adjustable sports seats; and a multifunction leather-covered steering wheel (with paddleshifts on DSG models). The GT model adds the Discover Navigation touch-screen navigation system; 2Zone climate control; dark-tinted rear windows; 18-inch ‘Interlagos’ alloy wheels; front fog lights; front and rear parking sensors; a black roof lining; chequered flag dash inserts; aluminium-look pedals and Alcantara upholstery. …/more 2 The R-Line model comes with R-Line-specific bumpers and side skirts; 19-inch ‘Talladega’ alloy wheels; R-Line scuff plates; an R-Line-specific steering wheel, handbrake and gearlever; ‘Carbon- look’ dash inserts; and heated, electrically adjustable ‘Vienna’ leather sports seats. The Scirocco GTS went on sale in the UK in January 2016 and adds 18-inch ‘Hayden’ alloy wheels and optional ‘GTS’ decals. ‘GTS’ design front and rear bumpers contrast with ‘Red’ brake calipers and ‘GTS’ badging on the radiator grille and rear tailgate. Chrome door sill protectors also feature the ‘GTS’ logo, with ‘Piano Black’ inserts in dash and centre console. Red stitching on the gear gaitor contrasts with the ‘GTS’ golf ball design gear knob. The top of the range Scirocco R comes with its own unique exterior styling kit; chrome-look door mirror caps; bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights; 19-inch ‘Cadiz’ alloy wheels; black brake calipers with ‘R’ logo; sports suspension (lowered by 10 mm); DCC Dynamic Chassis Control and the XDS electronic differential lock for increased traction. SUMMARY Revised Scirocco unveiled at Geneva Show in March 2014 – 40 years after the original version (the new Scirocco also made its debut at Geneva, in 2008) First generation Scirocco was sold in the UK from 1974 to 1984; second from 1985 to 1993; third from 2008 to 2014. A total 77,460 vehicles were sold over the first two generations, and 48,210 of the third-generation car from September 2008 until the end of June 2016 Scirocco based on Iroc Concept car from 2006 and was styled by a team led by Klaus Bischoff, Chief Designer at Volkswagen Two-door, four-seat sports coupé; front-engined and front-wheel drive Distinctive design draws inspiration from the Iroc Concept, with pronounced haunches that sweep over the rear wheel arches and are accentuated by a tapered sill line that pinches around the middle of the vehicle Haunches flow into the slim LED rear light units and a practical hatchback boot (the handle of which is incorporated within the Volkswagen logo). An aerodynamic wing sits atop the boot Airy and light interior with optional panoramic sunroof to emphasise feeling of spaciousness Classic coupé proportions mean the Scirocco is low and wide. A long wheelbase measuring 2,578 mm brings with it stability and permits a 6 ft passenger to sit comfortably behind a 6 ft driver. The vehicle measures 4,256 mm long, 1,406 mm high and 1,810 mm wide. (Golf Mk VII has a 2,637 mm wheelbase and is 4,349 mm long, 1,452 mm high and 1,799 mm wide) Boot aperture leads to a 312 litre luggage space that can expand, via the split folding rear seats, to 1006 litres to boost practicality Optional features available for the Scirocco include the ‘Dynaudio Excite’ sound system, Park Assist and rear-view camera Standard features include three sports instrument dials on the dash to monitor engine oil temperature, charge pressure and a chronometer The Scirocco is offered in five trim levels: Scirocco, Scirocco GT, Scirocco R-Line, Scirocco GTS and Scirocco R. GT trim is expected to take over half of all sales, followed by R-Line (around a third), Scirocco, R and GTS …/more 3 Standard Scirocco trim level is available with the choice of two petrol engines and one diesel engine: a 1.4-litre TSI unit developing 125 PS (only available with a six-speed manual gearbox), a 2.0-litre TSI unit developing 180 PS and a 2.0-litre TDI 150 PS common rail diesel engine capable of achieving 67.3 mpg on the combined cycle (these are both available with either a six-speed manual or DSG gearbox) Scirocco GT and GT Black Edition are available with a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines: a 1.4-litre TSI 125 PS unit (manual only), a 2.0-litre TSI unit developing 180 PS; and a 2.0-litre TDI common-rail engine with 150 or 184 PS (all 2.0-litre units are available with either six-speed manual or DSG gearboxes) Scirocco R-Line is available with the 2.0-litre TSI 180 PS and the two 2.0-litre diesels, all with either six-speed manual or DSG gearboxes Scirocco GTS went on sale in the UK in January 2016 and is available with 2.0-litre TSI 220 PS, with BlueMotion Technology and a choice of a six-speed manual or a DSG gearbox The Scirocco R tops the range, and comes solely with a 280 PS 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine, with either a six-speed manual or DSG gearbox A comprehensive range of safety features is fitted to the Scirocco as standard.

This action has received funding from the European Union (DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion) WP3: Country case studies Report - Portugal Case study 1 - Volkswagen Autoeuropa Raquel Rego & Sónia Apolinário Instituto de Ciências Sociais – Universidade de Lisboa Lisbon, October 2019 The content of this document does not reflect the official opinion of the European Union. Responsibility for the information and views expressed lies entirely with the author. 1. Introduction A key player in the national context In 1995, Volkswagen moved into Portugal with the opening of an automotive production plant, Volkswagen Autoeuropa. Located in Palmela, in the district of Setúbal (about 30 km from Lisbon and 10 km from the port of Setúbal), the plant entered production in May 1995. Autoeuropa still represents the largest foreign investment ever made in Portugal, generating a significant impact on the national and regional economy and estimated to represent 1.6% of the national GDP1. A relevant case study Portuguese researchers have devoted a great deal of attention to the study of Autoeuropa, for example the works by Stoleroff and Casaca (1996), Correia (2000), Costa (2013) and Stoleroff and Chora (2017). Their interest is due, on the one hand, to the company’s technological innovation, employing the "kaizen" system and "lean production" in a country where industrial development is otherwise weak and Fordism predominates (Correia, 2000); on the other hand, to the exceptional nature of its labour relations system (Costa, 2013), which essentially derives from the group's strategy and contrasts with the pattern in which Portugal is commonly inserted characterised by centralized negotiation and weak worker representation at the company level – although there is no co-determination in the Portuguese plant.
