Introduction A key player in the national context In 1995, Volkswagen moved into Portugal with the opening of an automotive production plant, Volkswagen Autoeuropa. Located in Palmela, in the district of Setúbal (about 30 km from Lisbon and 10 km from the port of Setúbal), the plant entered production in May 1995. Autoeuropa still represents the largest foreign investment ever made in Portugal, generating a significant impact on the national and regional economy and estimated to represent 1.6% of the national GDP1. A relevant case study Portuguese researchers have devoted a great deal of attention to the study of Autoeuropa, for example the works by Stoleroff and Casaca (1996), Correia (2000), Costa (2013) and Stoleroff and Chora (2017). Their interest is due, on the one hand, to the company’s technological innovation, employing the "kaizen" system and "lean production" in a country where industrial development is otherwise weak and Fordism predominates (Correia, 2000); on the other hand, to the exceptional nature of its labour relations system (Costa, 2013), which essentially derives from the group's strategy and contrasts with the pattern in which Portugal is commonly inserted characterised by centralized negotiation and weak worker representation at the company level – although there is no co-determination in the Portuguese plant. -

The Supervisory Board thanks Dr. Hohmann-Dennhardt for contributing her outstanding expertise and experience to achieving important milestones, and for supporting the Group in revising its internal guidelines and procedures. Dr. Hohmann-Dennhardt was appointed Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG with responsibility for ‘Integrity and Legal Affairs' on January 1, 2016. During the past twelve months, she has also launched improvements in the Group’s compliance structures. Furthermore, a campaign to foster the culture of integrity within the Group was rolled out under her leadership. Volkswagen AG and Dr. Hohmann-Dennhardt are parting due to differences in their understanding of responsibilities and future operating structures within the function she leads. In light of the changes initiated by Dr. Hohmann-Dennhardt and the important role of the integrity and legal affairs function for the Company, the Supervisory Board decided to appoint a successor without delay. Ms. Hiltrud Werner will take over the post. She has been Head of Volkswagen Group Auditing since January 1, 2016. People of the Beetle Generation sit up and take notice when they hear it today. They are strangely touched, experience melancholy, as though remembering something long since lost. It is a sound as unmistakable as the Beetle's silhouette: it buzzes, it putters - all against a background of soothing fan noises – a feeling of euphoria which has underscored our mobility for decades and which was the accompaniment for our independence and for growing prosperity during those years. Beginning in the late 1940's and continuing into the early 1980's, the unmistakable noise of the Beetle left its mark on the sound backdrop of German streets.
