The Development of the Ecclesiology and the Political Theology of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Autoceph The development of the Ecclesiology and the Political Theology of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Autocephalous Greek Orthodox Church in response to Muslim Christian relations in the contemporary context of modern Greece and Turkey until 2014 Nikolaos-Nikodemos Anagnostopoulos Heythrop College, University of London PhD September 2015 1 Abstract Muslims and Christians have been in a challenging symbiotic existence for a long period in many parts of South-Eastern Europe and the Middle East (Antioch, Jerusalem, and Alexandria). The relations of Christian and Muslim communities of each south-eastern European country are unique because of the diverse political, cultural, and socio-economic background of each nation, which however influences one another despite an often shared Ottoman background. The present study investigates the relations between Muslim and Christian communities in the contemporary context of modern Greece and Turkey, which have received many political, governmental, cultural, geographical, and religious influences leading them to the present relational shape. The thesis proposes that a distinct ecclesial development has taken place in the contemporary status of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Autocephalous Greek Orthodox Church in response to Muslim- Christian relations in modern Turkey and Greece, especially after the establishment of the Kingdom of Greece in 1832 and the Republic of Turkey in 1923. In addition, the thesis investigates the modern historical context of the States of Greece and Turkey especially as it relates to the minority question under the light of reciprocity and the International Treaties, Conventions, and the Declaration of Human Rights. Greece, where the prevailing religion is Eastern Orthodoxy, accommodates within its borders an official recognised Muslim minority based in Western Thrace as well as other Muslim populations located at major Greek urban centres and the Islands of the Aegean Sea. On the other hand, Turkey where the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople is based, is a Muslim country, which accommodates within its borders an official recognised Greek Orthodox Minority, located principally in Istanbul, the Princes' Islands and the Islands of Imbros (Tk. Gökçeada) and Tenedos (Tk. Bozcaada) at the Turkish coast of the Aegean. After an extensive analysis of the associated literature regarding the historical background and the development of the Orthodox Ecclesiology and the political Theology of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Autocephalous Greek Orthodox Church in relation to the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne. This Treaty regulates the issues of the Muslim and the Greek Orthodox minorities. Furthermore, semi-structured interviews were applied in order to gather information about the contemporary conditions of the Muslim and Christian communities in 2 Western Thrace and Istanbul. The study recruited religious and political individuals, who live in those two specific regions because of their thorough experience and familiarity with the relevant minority legislation and understanding of Islamic and Christian religious practices. The collected data have been analysed on a thematic analysis approach. The thesis concludes that religious practices and beliefs have an effect on the nature of the relationship, which develops between Muslims and Christians in contemporary Turkey and Greece as well as on the political and socio-cultural content alternations of minority religious groups. Susan Sontag, Regarding the Pain of Others On September 6‐7 1955, a large‐scale attack targeted Greek, Armenian and Jewish citizens of Turkey living in Istanbul.1 Approximately 100,000 people organized in coordinated gangs of twenty‐thirty committed acts of violence in neighbourhoods and districts where Istanbul’s non‐ Muslim population was mostly concentrated.2 Using various previously acQuired tools (i.e. stones, levers, logs, shovels, saws, welding machines) residences and shops were ruined and pillaged; their contents wrecked, thrown into the streets, trailed behind vehicles; and churches, community schools and cemeteries vandalized. The attacks comprised a key reason for the subseQuent large‐scale migration of non‐Muslims from Turkey, especially that of the Greek Orthodox community. On the same dates in İzmir, attacks targeted not only shops, homes and churches belonging to the Greek community, but also the Greek Consulate, and in Ankara mass student rallies supporting the attacks in İstanbul were organized. Tsougarakis The Fourth Crusade and the sack of Constantinople by the crusaders cast a long shadow on Greece’s subsequent history and on relations between Greeks and western Europeans down to the present day. Pope John Paul ii’s apology to the Orthodox for the events of the crusade, in 2001, and the satisfaction with which it was received by certain sections of the clergy and of wider Greek soci- ety serves to illustrate, if not the actual impact of the events themselves, at least popular perceptions of the events in Greece and the West as well as the use made of these events in 20th-century historiography. Today, the relations of the medieval western world with the Greek/Byzantine East may be more relevant than ever. The Eurozone crisis of the early 2010s has been accompa- nied by the re-emergence in segments of the press and society (both Greek and western European) of negative national stereotypes emphasising the differ- ences between Greek and western-European culture and questioning whether a union between the two is viable or indeed desirable. The terms ‘Latin Greece’, which features in the title of this volume, and ‘medieval Greece’, which also features in the book, may require some explana- tion. Here, they are used as shorthand to refer to the Latin polities that were founded on Byzantine lands in the aftermath of the Fourth Crusade. They can be taken therefore as rough synonyms for the political entity known as the Latin Empire of Constantinople or Romania, as it was more commonly called by Latin contemporaries.

From the start, however, the Christian religious and political leaders in Istanbul and elsewhere in what remained of the Empire, often encouraged by the occupation forces, stirred the Christian minorities to take advantage of the occupation to achieve greater political aims. Greek nationalists hoped that the occupation could be used to regain control of "Constantinople" and annex it to Greece along with Izmir and much of western Anatolia. From the first day of the armistice and occupation, the Greek Patriarch held daily meetings in churches throughout the city arousing his flock with passionate speeches, assuring those gathered that the long­ held dream of restoring Hellenism to "Constantinople" would be realized and that "Hagia Sophia" (Aya Sofya) would once again serve as a cathedral. The "Mavri Mira" nationalist society acted as its propaganda agency in Istanbul, with branches at Bursa and Band1rma in western Anatolia and at K1rkkilise (Kirklareli) and Tekirdag in Thrace. It received the support of the Greek Red Cross and Greek Refugees Society, whose activities were supposed to be limited to helping Greek refugees.• Broadsides were distributed announcing that Istanbul was being separated from the Ottoman Empire.

Kadim tarihin bütün çizgileri, hem bu şehre yüklenen anlamın bir yansımasıdır hem bu şehirde buluşmuş ve yaşanır son örneğini korumaya de ilgili kültürlerin bu şehri nasıl gördüğünün ve nasıl çalışmış; modernite, kadim ile yüzleşmesinin en çetin, içselleştirdiğinin bir ifadesidir. Evliya Çelebi’yi esas alıp en dinamik ve en renkli serüvenini bu şehrin merkezinde nakledersek Latincede Bizantium, Antoninya, Alma Roma, bulunduğu bir jeokültürel ortamda yaşamıştır. İstanbul’da Nova Roma (Yeni Roma), Rumca Eptalofos (Yedi Tepe), son yıllarda gözlenen akış hareketliliği, küreselleşmenin Yunancada Basilevousa (Şehirlerin Kraliçesi), Megalopolis de yine bu şehirde en meydan okuyucu niteliği ile kendini (Büyük Şehir), Poznatyam ve Kostantıniyye, Arnavutçada göstereceğinin izlerini taşımaktadır.
