ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 Omékongo Dibinga, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Barbara Finkelstein, Professor Emerita, University of Maryland College of Education. Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility. This dissertation seeks to shed light on the life and development of Jay-Z during a time of great challenge and change in America and beyond. It sounds like something out of a movie to hear him tell it, but Tracy T can actually recall the moment he knew he would become a rapper. "I was six-years-old, and I was sitting on the porch with a little boom box blasting," remembers the Atlanta MC and Maybach Music Group artist. "Snoop Dogg's 'Gin and Juice' came on, and I told my older cousin that I was going to be like Snoop one day. That was it. It just felt so natural—like I was meant to do it all along." His introduction to recording happened shortly thereafter. While in the first grade, he spit his very first verse into the microphone at a professional studio. Hip-hop had effectively claimed the youngster, and he dedicated his entire life to it. Tracy T would go from fine-tuning his skills in his bedroom closet at 17-years-old to releasing his first local single "Swagger Right Check" in 2009. The track started to gain traction through street marketing and his constant hustle, but tragedy unexpectedly struck in December 2009…four times, no less. "I got shot in the chest, the side, the hand, and the leg," he sighs. "It slowed down my career a lot. I had a bag on my stomach for six months and developed a crazy scar. I had to learn how to walk again, and it took me so long to recuperate. A year later, I tried rapping, but I would run out of breath. I didn't give up though.
