  • Editorial Taking Over the Mantle of President from Madame Veil Is an Immense Honour for Me
Editorial Taking over the mantle of President from Madame Veil is an immense honour for me. Both in all that that she has achieved in the last six years, and her charisma and personality, Simone Veil has left her mark on both conscience and memory and has made certain that noone can forget the unique and extreme character of the Shoah. In 2005, during the official ceremonies to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, it was she who, in the name of all Jews who were deported, invited leaders to join in the struggle against hatred, antisemitism, racism and intolerance. Her voice found an echo all over the world. In 2007 it is thanks to her initiative that France has made a further step on the path of memory: finally the actions of the “Justes” have been recognised by the Republic and study of their deeds is now part of the school curriculum. The Pantheon still echoes with the words of former President Jacques Chirac, speaking out against hate speech and acts of antisemitism and racism which dishonour the glory of today’s France as they did in the past. The values that Simone Veil incarnated in an exemplary way, I will do everything I can to defend and perpetuate. The activities set in motion by Simone Veil, I pledge to continue. Using the significant means which we have at our disposal the pri- mary aim of the Foundation is to continue to help to improve the lives of Shoah survivors whose means are otherwise limited and for whom social institutions can provide help.

ANNUAL REPORT 2015 Cover : Deportation wagon, Auschwitz-Birkenau 1 Defending our values In 2015, a series of attacks by Islamists plunged France into mourning. Our values and our way of life were targeted and—once again—Jews were singled out. As we commemorate the seventieth anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi camps, as we remember this victory of the civilized world over barbarity, new barbarians have brought bloodshed to our streets, killing in cold blood in the name of an ideology of hate. In the face of these horrors, we cannot give in to fear nor to the temp- tation to withdraw, but must do everything in our power to defend our model of tolerance and liberty. As part of its mission and to the best of its ability, the Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah aims to con- tribute to this combat. We have therefore bolstered our support in the combat against anti-Semitism and we will obviously continue to support education and knowledge of history. Today, more than ever, we want to transmit forcefully and with determination a message of fraternity from the survivors of the Shoah. Within this difficult context, the Foundation also intends to work with its partners to build the future of French Judaism. In 2015, we implemented an exceptional allocation of €10 million over three years so as to contrib- ute significantly to the financing of major projects. The goal is to support initiatives geared to strengthening French Judaism, with a particular fo- cus on educational and cultural projects. In opposition to those who would like to undermine the foundations of our society, we want to defend the shared values of Judaism and the Republic at one and the same time.

POLITIQUE ET RELIGIONS « COMME UNE AMBIANCE DE BAR MITZVAH » ENQUÊTE « Vous êtes une revue engagée ? », « Pourriez- vous m’envoyer un exemplaire avant ? ». Orthodox medical ethics has moved beyond the abstract condemnation of SCS to the design of practical rules for transsexuals living in observant com- munities. The reasoning against SCS has also shifted, both in complexity and with implicit ties to Christian and secular tropes. By medicalizing or, conversely, spiritualizing the experiences of transgendered persons, a few Orthodox authors are opening up interpretive space for sympathetic responses to SCS. Such transitions reach their most elaborate expression in Israeli Orthodox rabbi Edan ben Ephraim’s 2004 monograph, Genera- tion of Perversions, which has taken center stage in Orthodox delibera- tions on transsexuality. Overall, halakhic discourse seems to be moving in innovative, unavoidably interdiscursive directions. Introduction Orthodox resistance to changes in Jewish law is, arguably, a strategic self-repre-
