This paper deals with empirical material in the form of comments obtained from the Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet’s and Expressen’s comment field on Facebook. The data-gathering method used for this paper is digital ethnography. This study aims to create an understanding of how argumentation is presented in open social arenas such as Expressen and Aftonbladet's comments field. The purpose of the study has been to show how the contested claims and facts are legitimized and negotiated in the comment fields. The theoretical framework has consisted of discourse theory and Boundary objects theory. The questions to be answered in the study is: In what way is truth constructed in the debate? How are the various claims of truth legitimized? In what way are facts and science used in the legitimization of the different claims of truths? The analysis shows that truth is constructed in many different ways, partly through what i choose to call denial and distrust discourse. The analysis also showed how climate research and the climate can be seen as a boundary object and be used to stabilize the denial discourse further. The result also showed that scientific evidence can be used in a variety of ways in the legitimization of the different claims of truth.

We have dug ourselves into a multitude of perilous crises, both despite and because of what we call progress or economic growth. In service of profit, we practice strategies of development that shred our social fabric while simultaneously plundering our planet, fuelling a toxic combination of sociocide and ecocide that leads to intractable cycles of systemic humiliation. The coronavirus pandemic is one manifestation of this dire predicament. At the same time, there are also immense windows of opportunity waiting for us to use. The pandemic reminds us that we can and must change: change quickly and for the better. Unfortunately, instead of recognising the depth of the crises at hand and grasping the historic opportunities to exit, it seems that too many may choose to stay short-sighted and myopic. Consequently, humanity risks missing a momentous opportunity that could ultimately save countless generations of life on this planet. This article offers reflections on the predicament we as humankind face, as well as a way forward, a way that transforms debilitating humiliation into life-giving dignity. Hopefully, it works as a wake-up call for us to answer the following question together: How must we, humankind, arrange our affairs on this planet so that dignified life will be possible in the long term? The Landesanstalt Für Medien (hereinafter “LFM”) had originally written to Frau Seibt on 26 February 2020 to complain of the following three videos (hereinafter “video 1”, “video 2” and “video 3” respectively): 1. "Climate change - all just hot air? - Part 1”, posted on 01.07.2019; 2. "I want you to think - Welcome to the Heartland Institute 2020", posted on 11.02.2020; 3. "Anti-Greta or pro-human?", posted on 16.02.2020. 2. It was I who introduced Frau Seibt to James Taylor, an old friend who is now President of the Heartland Institute, at a conference of the Europäisches Institut für Klima und Energie (EIKE) in München on climate change in December 2019. 3. I spoke at the EIKE conference and arranged for Frau Seibt to be called to speak as well. Her speech reflected what video 1 demonstrates was already her opinion by that time: namely, that the adverse effects of global warming have been much exaggerated and its benefits much underestimated. 4. When I suggested to Frau Seibt that she might like to meet Mr Taylor, she said she had not previously heard of the Heartland Institute.

I had to look at you. I know more about you than you know about me. Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced. (Baldwin 103) This twentieth anniversary COPAS special issue considers how white supremacy operates in cultural practices and political stances in US American contexts. James Baldwin’s words in the epigraph above point out the necessity of looking at a phenomenon that is at once familiar and yet has taken on new shades of violence and virulence today—while fantasies of post-raciality and white innocence still abound. I write this afterword with mixed feelings; feelings which help me situate myself and my intellectual contribution here in a space that allows me to find words to face the fact that ‘nothing can be changed until it is faced.’ And what is it that must be faced? What must be changed? The short answers are: white supremacy needs to be faced as it comes to a head in contemporary life. And those who benefit from the contexts of privilege which enable white supremacy need to revisit their perspectives on whiteness to recognize that its manifestation as white supremacy has done—and is still doing—more harm than good both to white people as well as people of color. Why would something as political and emotional as this find space in an academic context? A change in thinking about how academic work contains both political and affective investments then bears scrutiny.
