A land and water resources engineering graduate student at Virginia Tech, she was among those who died in the campus shootings on April 16. As a researcher for SANREM CRSP’s Long-term Research Award Activity 3, Julia traveled to Ecuador and Peru in 2006 to begin work on water quality modeling to estimate erosion from footpaths and unpaved roads in agricultural watersheds in the high Andes. Julia Pryde Mary Leigh Wolfe, co-Principal Investigator for the SANREM long-term program, worked with Julia on her research and was her adviser for undergraduate and master’s studies in biological systems engineering at Virginia Tech. Julia showed maturity and wisdom beyond her years, Wolfe said. She stood out at her age because she already had a life plan and was taking steps to achieve it. She felt strongly about making things right for people and the environment. These contexts are often uncertain and risky, and the decision makers are vulnerable. This presentation shares experiences with rural communities in the Andes, and in Kenya, using a similar framework, to create information that is relevant to local decision makers, through a process that builds trust, by connecting local and scientific knowledge. One experience focuses on translational research for information on innovations, while the second focuses on community processes to understand sources of vulnerability and potential practices that contribute to adaptation and resilience. Participatory research approaches aim to build human, social and political capitals while producing salient information for local decision makers. These cases used techniQues that acknowledge potential gender, ethnicity, life cycle, and vulnerability status. The cases are set up to compare outcomes across landscapes shaped by agroecological

    Internal Ex-Post Evaluation for Technical Cooperation Project conducted by Bolivia Office: October 2017 Country Name Project for Rural Development in Altiplano Central The Plurinational State of Bolivia I. Project Outline Altiplano Central Region, covering from Patacamaya (La Paz Department) to Tambo Quemado (Oruro Department), is plain sweeping away in the mountainous areas at altitude of 3,700 -4,500m. Around 40% of rural population in Bolivia inhabited in this region. However, since low land productivity had been induced by cold and sever climate condition with limited rainfall (250-400mm) and soil erosion caused by geographical condition and concentrated heavy rain in the rainy season, the rural poverty ratios in the two provinces were about 85% (the Background National Institute of Statistics (INE), 2001). After the construction of arterial road supported by JICA in the region, municipalities in the region had showed a strong desire of rural development under the cooperation of JICA. While necessary activities for rural development had been prioritized by the municipalities in the region, there were issues to be addressed including lack of technical skills of local technicians for construction of small scale irrigation facilities and lack of extension services for farming management utilizing irrigation system. The project aimed at implementation of small irrigation agriculture in the target municipalities through construction of small scale irrigation system and enhancement of technical capacity of municipal technicians on soil management and cultivation techniques, thereby improvement of agricultural productivity and dissemination Objectives of the of activities introduced by the project to other areas of target provinces. Company. This work aimed to help FactumX S.R.L. Company in the translation of tourist information of La Paz Department at the company since the problem found at the company was the lack of tourist attractions information of La Paz Department in English. In that sense, the main objective of our Guided Work was to translate tourist inventory cards of La Paz Department from Spanish into English at the company, applying different translation techniques. The work at the company lasted around six months; it started on September 5th, 2008, and finished on June 27th, 2009, as it was established in the agreement signed between the FactumX S.R.L. Company and the Mayor de San Andrés University. Throughout the translation work of tourist information of La Paz Department, we identified terminology concerning tourism field and we elaborated a glossary with technical terminology related to this area. In addition, we identified Aymara language terminology and it is also part of a glossary made. Therefore, in order to explain the process of the Guided Work and the results, we divided our report in five chapters.
