GAUGE:

24 sts + 32 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

1. Hat is worked back and forth in rows then seamed. 2. Hat and Scarf are worked in stripes, changing color every 4 rows. Do not cut yarn when changing color. Carry the color not in use along the side edge of the piece.

COLORS Medium Red (A) White (B) Cool Green (C)

HAT With A, cast on 24 sts. Rows 1-4: (K1, p1) across. At the end of Row 4, change to B. Rows 5-8: With B, beg with a RS (knit) row, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 4 rows. Rows 9-11: With A, work in St st for 3 rows. Shape Top of Hat Row 12: With A, *p2, p2tog; rep from * across – 18 sts at the end of this row. Change to B. Row 13: With B, knit. Row 14: With B, *p1, p2tog; rep from * across – 12 sts. Row 15: With B, knit. Row 16: With B, *p2tog; rep from * across – 6 sts. Cut yarn leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.

FINISHING Seam sides. Pom-pom With C, and following package directions, make a small pompom and tie to top of Hat. Weave in ends.

SCARF With A, cast on 10 sts. Rows 1-4: With A, beg with a RS (knit) row, work in St st. At the end of Row 4, change to B. Rows 4-8: With B, rep Rows 1-4. At end of Row 8, change to A. Repeat Rows 1-8 until piece measures about 18 in. (45.5 cm) from beg. Bind off.

FINISHING Weave in ends.
