(10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with A and straight needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. STITCH EXPLANATION: kfb (knit into front and then back) An increase worked as follows: 1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle. 2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle. 3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st. SWEATER With straight needles and A, cast on 62 sts. Rows 1-7: Knit. Row 8 (WS): K4, p to last 4 sts, k4. Row 9: Knit. Rep last 2 rows until piece measures about 2 1/2 in. (6.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS row. Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row. Divide for Fronts and Back Next Row (RS): K14 and sl these sts to holder for right front, bind off 4 sts (for armhole), k25 and sl these last 26 sts to holder for back, bind off 4 sts (for armhole), k to end of row - 14 sts rem for left front. Left Front Next Row (WS): K4, p to end of row. Next Row: Knit. Rep last 2 rows 5 times. Shape Neck Next Row (WS): P4 and sl these 4 sts to holder for collar, p to end of row - 10 sts rem for left front. Next Row: Knit. Next Row: Bind off 2 sts, p to end of row - 8 sts. Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 6 rows. Bind off. Right Front Sl 14 sts for right front from holder to needle. Next Row (WS): P to last 4 sts, k4. Next Row: Knit. Rep last 2 rows 5 times. Bind off 8 sts at beg of next 2 rows - 10 sts rem. Sl rem sts to holder for collar. Sleeves (make 2) With A, cast on 28 sts. Rows 1-7: Knit. Beg with a WS row, work in St st until piece measures 3 in. (7.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS Row. Bind off 2 sts at the beg of next 2 rows - 24 sts rem. Bind off rem sts. Finishing Sweater Sew shoulder seams. Collar From RS with A, k4 sts for right front collar from holder, pick up and k8 sts across right front neck edge, k10 sts for back neck from holder, pick up and k8 sts across left front neck edge, k4 sts for left front collar from holder - 34 sts at the end of this row. Knit 5 rows. Next (Increase) Row: K1, kfb, k to last 2 sts, kfb, k1 - 36 sts. Knit 1 row. Rep last 2 rows until there are 42 sts. Bind off. Sew Sleeve seams. Sew in Sleeves. Weave in ends. DRESS NOTES 1. When knitting in the rnd on double pointed needles (dpns), your sts need to be divided fairly evenly onto the needles. If you are working with a set of 4 dpn, your sts should be divided among 3 needles. If you are working with a set of 5 dpn, your sts should be divided among 4 needles. The total number of sts will not always be evenly divisible by the number of dpns that you are using - this is not a problem! Simply divide your sts as evenly as possible, you will still create a symmetrical 'tube' of knitting 2. Carry color not in use along WS of work. Skirt With B, cast on 72 sts. Divide sts onto 4 double pointed needles (18 sts on each needle). Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts. Rnds 1-3: Knit. Rnd 4 (turning ridge): Purl. Rnds 5-7: Knit. Next Row: Bind off 5 sts for back neck, k to end of row - 4 sts rem for left shoulder. Purl 1 row. Bind off. Finishing Dress Sew shoulder seams. Armhole Edging From RS, with double pointed needles and B, pick up and k31 sts evenly around armhole edge. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle. Knit 1 rnd. Bind off. Rep for other side. Sew button to back bodice. Use space between sts for buttonhole. Weave in ends. HAT With C, cast on 48 sts. Divide sts onto 4 double pointed needles (12 sts on each needle). Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts. Rnds 1-4: *K2, p2; rep from * to end of rnd. Work in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd) until piece measures about 2 in. (5 cm) from beg. Next (Decrease) Rnd: *K6, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd - 42 sts at the end of this rnd. Knit 1 rnd.     How to Read a Charted Knitting Pattern – Class by Tricia Ennis A charted knitting pattern is simply a graphic representation of a written knitting pattern. It takes less room than a written pattern and gives a visual idea of what each motif piece should look like. Think of charts as maps rather than a list of directions. Working from a chart makes is easier to see where you are in a pattern and to identify errors more quickly. Charts are always written as though you are “looking” at the front of the work. After a bit of practice, most knitters find working from charts much more intuitive, quick, and simple than working from line-by-line text instructions. Charts are written in “motifs” so the chart is repeated X number of times across the knitting row/round. Charts are normally presented with a stitch legend or key so it is not necessary to understand all the knitting symbols on a chart to use it. There are many symbols which are common across charts but, sometimes, a specific designer may use a different symbol so it is important to check the key before you start to make sure you are aware of what the symbols mean for the chart you are working. Each square on a chart represents one stitch and each square offers a visual representation of what the completed stitch looks like (for example, a blank square usually represents a k stitch which is nice and smooth, a square with a dot in it usually represents a p stitch which has a little lump at the base, a square with a circle (O) in it usually represents a yo (yarn over) which results in a hole in the work, etc.) Note that these visuals are presented as RS stitches and, in actual fact, the blank square usually means k on RS, p on WS, whereas the square with the dot usually means purl on the RS, knit on WS.

Types of Color Knitting Beth says that Intarsia isn't her favorite style of knitting, but she could do stranded knitting forever. She mentions that even though most people think of Fair Isle as the only method for color knitting, that's a misnomer. She explains that Fair Isle has a particular set of rules, such as only including two colors in each round or how many stitches you can "float" the yarn along in a row. So Fair Isle is a part of stranded knitting, but not all stranded knitting is Fair Isle. Several other types of color knitting exist - including Norwegian, Swedish, and Latvian knitting - and those often incorporate several colors in one row or round. Beth explains that "technique is technique" - and there are many ways to knit color work, using one or both hands according to the knitter's preference. Each style of stranded knitting tends to have its preferences where that is concerned. Steeking Steeking isn't just the act of cutting your knitting - it's the act of putting extra stitches into your knitting for the purpose of cutting them later. Shetland wool has many microscopic "hooks" in each fiber, which helps to hold the fibers together. So as Beth explains, you can cut Shetland wool and it won't really go anywhere, making it ideal for color work that will be steeked.
