16 2016 Autocross (AX) Season

In 2016 the Autocross team is expanding the Club's Autocross offerings. • Sunday May 22 - Circleville (CRP)"New" (w/ United Ford Owners Group) • Sunday Jun 19 - Columbus Motor Speedway (CMS) • Sunday Jul 24 - Columbus Motor Speedway • Sunday Aug 21 - Columbus Motor Speedway

Circleville Raceway Park (CRP) is a new venue for MORPCA, but has been popular of late with other clubs for AX and Kart racing. CRP is a rather unique venue as it is a road course with elevation changes and very minimal cones for an autocross. Come out to CRP or CMS and try your hand at a MORPCA Autocross in your own Porsche (or other car) and see what your car is capable of when challenged by deceptively modest speeds and orange cones.

MORPCA Autocross details: BEGINNERS WELCOME!!!! If you would like to learn more about you and your car’s capabilities, autocrossing is your answer. No prior experience is necessary. Come and walk the course prior to the start of the event with the experienced drivers to learn the most efficient way around the course, braking points, etc. Novice drivers will get a parade lap in their car to get the feel for the layout. Novice drivers can also have experienced drivers ride with them during the timed runs. Loaner helmets are available. It’s a blast. Come and join us. If you have any questions please contact: Mike Tepley at: [email protected]

There was an ad for the Arthritis Show in July, so I went. I parked out in the distant parking lot (not having a “concours-quality” car) and found my way to the Porsche display. Everyone was busy cleaning and polishing as the final concours prep was being done. After introducing myself as a ‘New Porsche Owner’ to one of the members, I was immediately escorted to the membership chair, Nancy Jackson, who was busy prep’ing a beautiful cream- colored 911. She stopped what she was doing, and took the time to introduce me to the current Board members, explain to me about MOR and PCA, and give me a membership application. (She also insisted that I go get my car and bring it over to be displayed with the other Porsches). I was so taken with her hospitality that I immediately realized that this is a group of folks that I would enjoy being around. 20 years later I still believe it was the right decision, and have continued to promote PCA to others.

What was your? Driver’s License test car: 1962 Ford Falcon with “3 on the Tree”!

First Car: 1957 Ford Fairlane 500, Black and White (don’t know if it was ex-cop car or not). Only had it 2 weeks until my brother wrecked it. Worst Car: 1960 Ford Falcon (are you seeing a pattern here?) with 85 HP and a 2-speed automatic. I learned to change out the engine fairly quickly (which was needed several times, as I Ronnie 1952 flogged that poor thing often). Best Car: Probably the 1981 928- the first car I racked up 200K miles on, rebuilt everything, and gained a deep appreciation for Porsche design and engineering. It’s still in the family at my son’s house in Chicago, being driven daily.

What Porsche would you possess “if you win the lottery?” Being a fairly practical fellow, and enjoying a good daily driver, I would probably get something conservative like a 1988 Pearl White 959.

What is your favorite car movie, car song, racing series, or other car related thing?

Favorite Movies: I love the original Disney “CARS” movie Favorite Song: Tom Cochrane song Life Is A Highway version by Rascal Flatts is the perfect theme song Favorite Racing Series: I’ve never been an “over the top” racing fan, but I did enjoy the old Can Am series at Mid-Ohio, and I do currently enjoy the Vintage Series events and meeting and talking with the owners/drivers- real car people.

February 2016

What Club activities do you take part in? I started volunteering at the Mid-Ohio Club Race in 1995 (our second year), and have enjoyed doing it each year since (except for the four years I was Zone Rep and had to ‘officiate’ at the event). I served as MOR Charity Chairperson, Treasurer, and President. I was appointed PCA Zone 4 Representative from 2010 to 2013. I currently coordinate the volunteers at the MOR Club Race, and serve on the PCA National Staff as the Procedures Chair.

What was the best car event you have been to & one you still want to go to? We have enjoyed twelve PCA Parades, one Escape, and Rennsport III, but our 2003 trip to Germany as a guest of Porsche AG (in a new 911 4S Cab) was an outstanding week on the road, and included a personal tour of the factory. We plan to return for another tour (at our own expense) and visit the new museum, Leipsig factory, and other sites (Le Mans?)

What would you like the club to be known for? Mid-Ohio Region has donated about $250,000 to various charities since 1997 and many of our members volunteer for numerous charities. We should be known for what we do in our community and not for the cars we drive.

What other interest do you have outside of MORPCA? As we celebrate our milestone 50th anniversary in 2016, I hope for MOR members to take the time to recognize all of the hard work that has been performed by countless volunteers over the years to make us a shining example to the central Ohio area of what the Porsche Club of America stands for- courtesy and safety on the roads, goodwill and fellowship within the Porsche community, and mutually beneficial relationships with other car clubs and the community as a whole. Do your part to make someone want to be part of our Club.

20 Brake Fluid Primer

Greg Adams, Castrol Field Service Engineer “The Guy on the Grid” [ed]

Brake fluids are classified by a DOT rating. Typically found The Boiling point is important as it determines the point at today are DOT-3 and DOT-4. There are two other which the fluid will boil. If the fluid reaches its’ boiling point, specifications DOT 5.0 and DOT 5.1 but they are not gas will become entrained in the brake fluid. This gas is typically seen in everyday use. So what do these compressible and will lead to a soft peddle or long travel. classifications mean? Here is a basic guide. The boiling point rating listed is a minimum and many Brake fluids are classified by their viscosity (a rating of racing DOT-4 brake fluids have higher boiling points of over resistance to flow), boiling point and type of fluid used. 600oF. So be sure to check the specifications of the brake fluid if you intend to use if for track days or racing. For DOT-3 uses a glycol Ether base fluid. Its’ viscosity limit is example, Castrol’s React SRF Racing brake fluid is a DOT- 1500 mm2/s (cSt). It has a minimum dry boiling point of 4 with a dry boiling point of 608oF. Not all DOT-4 fluids 401o F (205oC) and a minimum wet boiling point of 284oF are equal. (140oC). It is used in older domestic vehicles. All of these brake fluids will absorb water. This water can DOT-4 uses a glycol Ether and borate-ester base fluid. Its’ lower the boiling point of the fluid. The wet boiling point is viscosity limit is 1800 mm2/s (cSt). It has a minimum dry based upon 3.7% water in the fluid. The more water in boiling point of 446o F (230oC) and a minimum wet boiling the fluid, the lower the boiling point. All these fluid can and point of 311oF (155oC). It is used in most modern will absorb water from the atmosphere. However, the domestic, European and Asian vehicles. reservoirs in cars are now are designed to limit this absorption. So long life can be obtained from brake fluids. The viscosity is very important for cars with ABS and Interestingly enough, DOT-4 fluids are more affected by Active handling systems. These systems usually measure water and the boiling point will drop off more rapidly in the the flow of the fluid through a known orifice in a given time presence of water. This is the reason it is recommend to to determine the correct reaction of the system. Lower change the DOT-4 more often. or higher viscosity will affect the reaction time and function of these systems. Please note DOT-3 fluids may With the exception of the DOT-5.0 fluids, the fluids are all cause problems with ABS and active handling systems compatible. They can be mixed in the braking system. due to viscosity. However, you end up with the rating of the lower performing fluid. Greg
