Editor Hello Fellow Club Members, Tom Stein Well, we made it to March; does that mean the 12456 Roesta Ln. snow and cold weather is behind us? Sure hope so. Low pay, no benefits and long hours. However, you will have opportunities to meet and work with some of the finest people in PCA. Perhaps, the pay is non-existent, but there are other rewards. Here is your chance to take control and project your creativity. We have had the current newsletter format for many years. Is it time for a change? The time commitment is not long, strenuous or tedious. Rather it’s a set your own hours, about a one day commitment each month to pull the articles together, format and prepare the newsletter for copy. You can work from home - no long commute required; nor a reason to buy a new wardrobe. There is no dress code; you can wear weekend causal or nothing at all.

Do I have your attention yet? We are in need of a newsletter editor or editors (this can be a shared task). Tom Stein is ready to pass the newsletter job on. His daytime job responsibilities (yea, the job that puts money in his pocket) are straining his free time activities. Tom will work with the new editor(s) during the transition period. He will not dump this job upon you without support. If someone does not step forward and take over this task, it won’t be long before we may not have a monthly newsletter! (see other article regarding newsletter frquency)

Are you ready to be the next newsletter editor? Contact Tom Stein or any Board member. We will be happy to discuss this very important responsibility with you.

Marsha Hayden has asked for some time now to be replaced as the Charity Chair. As chairperson you pick four or five members for your committee. The committee’s responsibilities include soliciting requests from charities, interviewing potential agencies and making recommendation to the Board. Some of the current members can continue on the committee.

Do you have a big heart? Are you looking for a worthwhile outlet for some free time? If so, please contact us. Maybe you just want to help rather than take over the chair. We need committee members too.

Also, several of us see a sizeable gap in technical support. We need someone to take leadership and set up tech sessions for our membership. I’ve heard many times from our membership that they wish we would have tech sessions so they could learn more about the technical or mechanical aspects of their vehicles. Just this past week, I met a prospective member (he will join) who wants tech sessions. This is his first Porsche, a 1999 911 cabriolet. Within our membership we have at least six (6) members who have or work in shops. I see an easy way to get free advertising for sponsoring a tech session! Again, if you are interested in hosting a tech event or know of individuals, shops or vendors who will, please let your Board members know.

For an organization to thrive, to grow and to blossom, we must furnish fresh nutrients to the organization. We cannot continue to rely on the same people year after year. We do burn out. Those of you who want to become active or more active please do so. We can always use volunteers, event hosts/chairs and chairpersons. We need someone to assume the Charity chair; take over or at least help with the newsletter; and help with establishing technical sessions for our membership. Won’t you please come forward and help.

5 Hocking Hills Spring Drive and Hike April 25, 2009 Located in the picturesque sandstone region of Southeastern Ohio, Hocking Hills State Park encompasses some of the most scenic areas in the entire state. Rock outcrops, deep cool gorges, and waterfalls are found throughout the area.

The drives will be through the best roads around and the hikes will be on easy trails, hand-picked by a member who lives and drives there every day. We’ll spend plenty of time in the cars to satisfy the driving enthusiast in each of us, and have a chance to stretch our legs as we breath the pine-scented air while walking through hemlock groves to marvel at cascading waterfalls, breathtaking cliffs, deep recess caves and forestland as far as the eye can see.

Bring a pair of shoes for driving and a pair of sturdy shoes for the hike. A mat or garbage bag for the hiking shoes is a good idea as the trails may be wet, but not muddy, in the spring.

We will finish up with a fantastic dinner at one of the local res- taurants. 6 Continued from page 6 March 2009

9 10 March 2009 2009 Porsche Motorsport Season Takes Off with 24 Hours At Daytona

Stuttgart - January 19, 2009 - For Porsche, the 2009 motorsport season takes off with a real classic. At the 24 Hours At Daytona, the time-honoured season-opener to the Grand-Am Series, nine Porsche works drivers as well as the two Porsche juniors compete, and are determined to continue the great success the Zuffenhausen sports car manufacturer has enjoyed here: With 20 victories, Porsche is the most successful manufacturer in the history of the legendary long distance race in Florida.

”This race is a huge challenge forOFFICIAL our teams and drivers BALLOT right at the start of the season,” says Hartmut Kristen, head of motorsport at Porsche. “The special appeal comes mostly from the fact that drivers come to Daytona from the most diverse racing series to compete on almost neutral ground.”

After securing two championship titles in 2007 and 2008 with the Porsche RS Spyder in the , (Germany) and () join forces with Penske Racing in the prototype class of the Grand-Am Series. For the twelve rounds this season, the suc- cessful team under fields a Riley chassis (start number 16) powered by a ca. 510 hp Porsche six-cylinder engine. The third driver in Daytona is (Australia), who normally earns points for the Penske squad in the American IndyCar Series.

”The 24 Hours At Daytona has always been one of my favourite races,” says Timo Bernhard, the 2003 winner with a GT3 RS. “You have the chance to compete against drivers from other racing series – pilots you’ve always wanted to race against. And if you can win, then that gives you the motivation and a tailwind for the rest of the season.”

Brumos Racing also enters two Porsche-Riley (No. 58 and 59) in the class for Daytona Prototypes. The most famous driver in the Brumos line-up, alongside the Indy500 champion (USA), is (USA). In 1973 he celebrated his first of five Daytona victories with Porsche, making him the most successful driver at this long distance classic. Other legendary Porsche pilots to grace the all-time honours list at the 24 Hours At Daytona are and , each with four wins.

Following a long tradition, Porsche is strongly represented in the GT class with its works drivers. Joerg Bergmeister (Germany), Daytona winner of 2003 and 2006 Grand-Am champion, teams up with (USA) in a Porsche 911 GT3 fielded by TRG (No. 67). Manning the TRG cars (No. 66 and 65) are (France) and Richard Lietz (Austria) as well as Porsche junior Marco Holzer (Germany). Wolf Henzler (Germany), reigning GT2 champion of the American Le Mans Series with Joerg Bergmeister, joins the driver crews of two 911 GT3 cars for Farnbacher Loles Racing (No. 85 and 87). Porsche junior Martin Ragginger (Austria) takes the wheel of the 911 GT3 for Autometrics Motorsports (No. 14). (Germany) and Patrick Pilet (France) compete for Wright Motorsports (No. 33). In the GT class, a total of 31 vehicles line up on the grid, 17 of which are Porsche 911 GT3.

The 24 Hours At Daytona takes off on Saturday, 24 January, at 3:30 EST and will be broadcast live on FOX Sports and SPEED.

See you at SPRING AT THE CAROUSEL!

12 March 2009 MORPCA Monthly Board Meeting January 7, 2009 Submitted by Betsy MacDonell, Secretary Members present: Jay Koehler, Dave Hayden, Marsha Hayden, Brian Peterson, Tom Stein, Frank Todaro, Betsy MacDonell, Tom Barry, Ron Carr, and Mike Stoner. The meeting was held at the King Avenue Five Sports Lounge and started at 7:01pm. The minutes from the December 3, 2008 meeting were read and adopted. Correspondence from Dave included a request from national to send in all new officer information. The treasurer’s report from Mike showed the club financials slightly ahead of last year. This year we had a profit of $488 while last year we lost $3K. The holiday party could have been costly due to the low turnout, but Gerhard was able to negotiate some new terms on the fly. The club only lost $100 total on the party. Mike made some minor changes to the 2009 budget including only funding 12K to charities. The revised budget shows the club ending in the black with close to 2K. A motion was made to adopt the budget by Ron and seconded by Frank and the vote was unanimous. The Driving Events Chair, Frank Todaro, passed around his 4 page budget for 2009. Fasten your seat belts, this driving season will be known as Frank’s Wild Ride! He has contracts and dates for 4 events this year including a Driver’s Instructors Event. In order to make this work, a big marketing plan is necessary along with incentives for early payments. There are also discounts offered to those that sign up for the whole season! Frank has set up a refund policy that includes a credit toward other events depending on the number of days cancellation notice is given. The schedule and terms will be posted on Clubrace.net very soon. Ken Bigham has volunteered to be the co-chair of the May Driver’s Education event. We still need a chair for the Putnam event and a registrar for the Bluegrass event. The registrars for the Mid Ohio event will be Dave Hayden for DE and Tom and Ginny Barry for Club Race. Jay reminded everyone that the next Club Race organizational meeting will be held on Satur- day, January 10th at Byers Auto Group. Dave announced that our Club Race date will not show up in the February Panorama for reasons he does not yet understand since it was submitted on time. Marketing these summer events will take on a new emphasis. Brian, with his marketing committee, has developed a plan called the “MORPCA Driving Experience”. The “experience” includes Autocross, Driver’s Education, Club Race, Car Shows and access to the Goodie Store. Sponsors can support the experience and receive different numbers of driving slots depending on the level of participation. For example, the highest sponsorship level is for naming rights at 13K and with it comes 6 tastes of the track opportunities, 12 DE slots and 1 garage rental. The amenities fall in line with the level of support. Tom Barry announced that MORPCA membership is over 800 again with a total of 806 for January 2009. A lengthy discussion developed about the e-mail blasts that we have been using of late to remind the membership of upcoming events. There is a perception that if it is used too often it will be deleted before opening thus losing the impact of the notice. The holiday party reminders were sent out to addresses that had already paid so some felt it could be regarded as spam. The system does not allow editing addresses nor does the operator have the time so everyone will have to get used to receiving periodic notices through e-mail. Tom Stein will produce a December/January issue of DOS because the amount of content warrants the combination due to production and postage costs. Tom would like to pass the newsletter editor responsibilities to someone else because of work and time requirements. Brian reminded everyone to send him all submittals that go to DOS so he can post them on the Website. Continued on page 14 13 On the social scene, Gerhard was pleased that the Holiday Party was well received and not a financial disaster. The idea of a January date for the Holiday Party was floated around the table. This event has traditionally also been the date of the required annual meeting of the membership. The only requirement of the annual meeting in the bylaws is that it has 21 days notice to the membership. The informal poll of the board was to keep the two together and keep an early December date. Check the DOS and Website calendar for the busy social season starting with the New Member Socializer at Schmidt’s on Saturday, January 31st. Betsy will send out invitations to all new (2 years or less) mem- bers via snail mail to encourage participation. Marsha announced that the club will need to pick 2 new charities for the open 3 year commitment spots. She also asked what the board thought of making the charities somewhat self supporting. The concept could be done through a swap meet or fund raiser dinners. The idea has merit and Marsha will continue to refine it. Roundtable Discussion —Frank volunteered to do the inventory of the MORPCA garage. Dave said he would help. —Betsy informed the board that MORPCA’s very own Scott Good is the national champion in his class within Club Race. Why is that information not more readily available to the general Porsche public?

The meeting adjourned at 9:14pm after a vote proposed by Marsha and seconded by Frank. The next meeting will be held on February 4th at the King Avenue Five Sports Lounge. Plan to meet for dinner at 6pm and the business portion to start around 7pm.

MORPCA Monthly Board Meeting February 4, 2009

Submitted by Betsy MacDonell, Secretary

Members in Attendance: Dave Hayden, Marsha Hayden, Ginny Barry, Mike Stoner, Betsy MacDonell, Andy Trux, Milton Scott, Brian Peterson, Ron Carr, Frank Todaro, Gerhard Hillmann, Dick Snyder, Karen Koehler, Jay Koehler, Dave Wenger, Deborah Wenger, Tom Todaro.

The meeting was held at the King Avenue Sports Lounge and started at 7:02pm. Dave amended the agenda to include IRAC and Concours discussion time. Betsy read the minutes from the January 7, 2009 meeting. The minutes were approved as read. In the Correspondence Department, Dave received a request for mechanical help from a member with an older 944. There are several garages that advertize within the club and Dave will forward that information to the member. Ginny received an inquiry from a company that produces decals and she wondered if the club wanted the information. Dave Hayden received an e-mail from a member offering to make car numbers for driving events at cost. The board collectively thought that the one time use adhesive numbers work the best because they don’t have to be collected at the end of an event!

Mike Stoner presented the treasurer’s report and it showed that cash is down due to track deposits and the social budget is only $79 in the red. Overall, Mike characterized the period as a “quiet month”.

Continued on page 15 14 March 2009

Frank Todaro led the discussion on Driving Events. He reported that all the 2009 Driver’s Education events are posted on PCA.net and our Club Race is on Clubrace.net. The next step for getting the dates out will be posting on other regions calendars and he plans to start that effort soon. Other car clubs (BMW, Corvette, Viper etc.) will also receive our track schedule. Frank and his DE committee are going to follow the Central Indiana Region’s DE event at Bluegrass on April 26th to catch any good execution ideas for our event in October. The Mid-Ohio DE has a goal of 40 paid advanced drivers and is set up to be a three day event within the Club Race run groups. The Putnam Park DE will have registration done manually (not online) to make sure the drivers are there for the instructor training sessions. Dave suggested that a personal pitch be made to the known pool of drivers that have expressed interest in instructor certification. The August DE at Mid-Ohio has some pricing issues because traditionally MORPCA has not charged a fee to the instructors and that aspect has made us unique. Frank will figure it out when the time comes!

Dave Wenger hosted an IRAC meeting at his home recently and promptly passed the organizational reins over to Jeff Dupler and Mark Oronosko for this season. Dave reported that there will be 6 dates this summer (maybe 1 more) between MORPCA, OVR, Maumee, and EBR. MORPCA will host at OSU for an IRAC event and at Columbus Motor Speedway and Westerville High School for a club events. The bad news from Dave concerned the fate of the timing equipment. The equipment was sent back to the manufacturer to change it from wireless to a hard wired arrangement because of all the interference at OSU. The manufacturer initially accepted the job and quoted $500. The equipment was sent to them in May 2008. The company evaded all attempts to commu- nicate the status of the repair with Dave or Jim Rybak. Finally, the company owner said that the equipment is junk and he will not ship it back unless we pay the shipping. Dave assured the board that it was working when he sent it back to be changed! Since the equipment is 10 years old, a new system may be the answer. Dave will look into other methods and what other clubs are doing.

Membership numbers were reported by Ginny this time. The membership is at 805 this month! Ginny also reminded everyone that the system can query for specific makes of cars if people want to know who has like cars.

The new member socializer at Schmidt’s was another smashing success. Gerhard used the opportunity to survey the members for their relative interests for different events. The data will be used to steer events toward member interests. Andy Trux offered an historical perspective on social events. He remembers a winter weekend event at Hueston Woods with an overnight stay was staggeringly popular. Watch the calendar for the next exciting event!

Milton Scott would like to assemble a committee to help him with the Concours part of the club. He is looking forward to the Arthritis Foundation Car Show to bring out the very best of the cars within the club and he hopes to host some more casual Concours events develop interest. There appears to be some interest in casual events, maybe tied to a picnic or at a restaurant. He also plans to host a detail clinic on a Saturday or Sunday at a large garage setting. The Arthritis Foundation Show will need people to do some of the judging and Milton assured everyone that experience was not necessary just consistency. MORPCA has a national Concours judge within the club who will help teach the nuances. So far, Andy Trux has expressed interest for the Concours planning committee.

Continued on page 16 15 Continued from page 15

Brian Peterson will be working hard on Phase I of “the Driving Experience” (getting sponsors) and will report back at the next board meeting. He announced that MAG is hosting a clinic on April 4th to check out basic elements of your car before the driving season starts. Brian has also redesigned the website so search engines will forward inquiries to our site. He needs all the event dates to put in the calendar, such as DE, Club Race, IRAC etc. The event chairs need to send any pdf files that support the event. Brian cannot stress enough that he needs content to make the site exciting, evolving and relevant!

Marsha Hayden has sent out the checks to the 2008 charities!

Roundtable Discussion

„ Mike Stoner liked the article that Parker MacDonell wrote about being the spouse of the car “guy”. „ Gerhard is excited about the food that will be served at the wine tasting event at his house later this month! He also would like to schedule another Taj ma garage event every 2 years to keep it fresh. „ Jay reminded everyone that the Club Race meeting is Saturday, February 14th at 10 am at Byers Imports. „ Frank likes the look of DOS and wants to help Tom Stein find a replacement. „ Milton said John Dixon is hosting “Speed Fest” this year again which entails go-kart races, a car show, and a driving component so be sure to check out his web site for the schedule of events. PCA Escape this year will be using his garage and hosting a tour of the Air Force Museum. Maybe we could organize a caravan to these events. „ Ron has received input from many members that want to continue to have a hard copy of DOS sent to them. „ Dick is concerned about the security of the storage locker and thinks it should be moved. Several people suggested other locations.

A motion to end the meeting was made by Mike and seconded by Gerhard. The vote passed. The meeting officially ended at 8:51pm and quickly resumed in the bar (unofficially!). The next meeting will be held at King Avenue Five on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at 7pm. Plan to meet at 6pm for cocktails and dinner.

BRUMOS RACING SCORES HISTORIC ROLEX 24 WIN WITH PORSCHE RILEY ANDDONOHUE/ LAW/GARCIA/RICE; TRG PORSCHE 911 GT3 CUPS TAKE ONE-TWO IN GT

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – January 25 – On the 40th anniversary of his father’s victory at the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona, , of Malvern, Penn., drove a gripping last hour of the 2009 sports car classic to pass, and then hold off, former Formula 1 champion and NASCAR star to score an overall win for him and his teammates Antonio Garcia (Madrid, Spain), and Buddy Rice (both Phoenix, Ariz.) in the Brumos Porsche Riley prototype at Daytona International Speedway.

It was the closest finish in the 47-year history of the Rolex 24, with Donohue edging Montoya by 17-hundreths of a second. In fact, with four cars finishing within eight seconds of the leader, this year’s finish will be hard to beat. The Brumos Racing team Porsche Riley of Joao Barbosa (Porto,Portugal)/Hurley Haywood (Ponte Verda Beach, Fla.)/JC France (Daytona Beach, Fla.)/TerryBrocheller (Vero Beach, Fla.) finished third after contesting the race late into the event. Continued on page 17 16 March 2009 Continued from page 16

Porsche’s perfect day was completed when the TRG Porsche 911 GT3 Cup racer piloted by Andy Lally (Dacula, Ga.)/Patrick Long (Bellair, Fla.)/Joerg Bergmeister (Langenfeld, Germany)/Justin Marks(Rockland, Calif.)/RJ Valentine (Braintree, Mass.) won the GT class of the Rolex 24 by a lap over TRG Porsche teammates Ted Ballou (Corona Del Mar, Calif.)/Emmanuel Collard (Paris, France)/TimGeorge, Jr. (New York, NY)/Richard Lietz (Ybbsitz, Austria)/Spencer Pumpelly (Suwanee, Ga.). Porsche also took third in GT, with the Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car of Sascha Maassen (Aachen, Germany)/Phillip Martien (Finksburg, Maryland)/Patrick Pilet (Le Chesnay,France)/BJ Zacharias (Cincinnati, Ohio).

The Brumos Porsche team win was significant for many reasons, including:

- The first overall win for Porsche since 2003 (The Racer’s Group Porsche 911 GT3 RS), and the first overall win for Brumos Racing since 1978 (). - The first win for a Porsche entered in the overall class since 1995 (Kremer – Porsche K8). - First win for the Porsche 911-based 3.99-liter Grand-Am race engine. - Brumos Racing’s first Daytona prototype win since 2003 (Mont Tremblant) Porsche prototypes led 500 of the 735 laps.

“This was a great team effort, which started last winter when we did more than 3,000 hours of testing, lots of creative problem-solving by the Brumos crew, and hard work by Porsche to improveour chances to win races overall,” said an elated Donohue, who scored his first overall 24-hour win.

“We were rock-solid when we got here, and we never touched the car once it rolled off the trailer. From fastest in practice in the winter test to qualifying on the pole for the race, we were set for agood event, and my team- mates did the rest. This was really great.” said Donohue.

The Crown Royal Penske Porsche Riley driven by Timo Bernhard (Germany)/Romain Dumas (France)/Ryan Briscoe (Australia) led much of the early part of the race, including the overnight hours, until the transmission broke as the sun came up on Sunday. The Penske Racing crew replaced the gearbox but lost 15 laps in the process, and ended up finishing sixth overall.

In the GT class, the Farnbacher Loles Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars were also fast, leading the class for many hours until mechanical ills beset them, especially the #86 Farnbacher/Lux/Marsh/Roush racer, which finished fifth, and the #87 Henzler/Keen/Werner/Westbrook Porsche, which finished eighth.

TRG team owner , who has an overall win and a class win at Daytona to his credit, said this GT victory was as rewarding as his overall victory in 2003. “This effort from all the guys at the shop, the drivers, and our partners make this very sweet. The ran great all weekend, and it was a great win. It’s nice to have people working withyou that are both talented and personable,” said Buckler.

19 “Register for Parade - 101” 54th Porsche Parade Keystone. CO. June 29th – July 4th, 2009 While talking with some of our PCA members during the regional Holiday parties, it occurred to Kathleen Lennon and I that some of you really didn’t have a good idea of what registering for the Porsche Parade is all about. We thought we should take a moment to explain just how the process goes. Here are some of the basics for you to think about:

When you register for Parade 2009 online, you must first have access to the PCA National website. Some of you may already have access to www.pca.org and have a password set up for its access. For those of you who do not, please contact Vu Nguyen, PCA Executive Director at [email protected] He will assist you in gaining access to the National site, where you will be registering for our 2009 Porsche Parade. Have a copy of the 2009 Porsche Parade’s full schedule of events at hand. It will help you when you are in the registration process, and you can find the full Parade schedule on www.porscheparade2009.com . It will list the four major competitive Events, Special Activities and Banquets plus all their dates and times for your convenient selection. The Parade registration process will take you approximately 30 minutes on line.

The 54th Porsche Parade registration fee is $165.00, and covers basic admittance to the Parade for the entrant, a co-entrant, and one car. The co-entrant may be an unaffiliated PCA member, but must share the same car with an entrant. An exception applies if the registered Porsche is not legal for street use, in which case a second Porsche may be registered for use in the TSD rally only.

Beginning with the 54th Parade, we have lowered the registration fee, but will be charging entrants additional fees for the four major competitive events, if you choose to enter any or all: Concours = $20 per car; Autocross = $20 per driver; TSD Rally = $10 per car; and Tech Quiz = $10 per person.

Additional fees apply for banquet/meal tickets and for selected other activities such as the spectacular driving tours, golf tournament, 5K walk/run and some Parade kids’ activities.

There are three ways to register for the Colorado Parade and all its activities: * The fastest, easiest way to register is online at www.pca.org * Before you can do that, you must be a registered user on the PCA website, as I have stated above. If you aren’t already registered, please do that now so you are ready to go at Registration time. If you are already registered, please make sure your information is up to date. * If you are not comfortable using the online method of registering, please go to the Colorado Parade site directly at www.porscheparade2009.com to download the registration form. Fill it in and mail it on or after March 3, 2009. * If you do not have Internet access, call Kathleen Lennon, Parade Registrar, at 719-487-2842 or 719- 330-1525 and request that a paper registration form be mailed to you. Requests for paper registration forms will be accepted beginning February 14th. * Mailed registrations and online registrations will be treated alike. There is no advantage to register- ing either way, beyond your own convenience.

20 March 2009

As in the past, there is no early registration. The online registration site will be available starting Tuesday, March 3rd. All online registrations submitted on March 3rd, 4th, or 5th will be treated equally as first day registration and paper registrations postmarked the same days. Paper entries received with an earlier postmark will be rejected. There is no rush to register on a single first day as in past Parades. You may also register later but your options may be somewhat limited.

As you can see, Parade registration has it rules, as do many regional events we all register for. If you are still confused or simply worried you won’t do it right, please feel free to call Kathleen Lennon. She will hold your hand through the process prior to our actual registration dates. Kathleen and I hope these hints and things to think about will help you with your registration for the 2009 Parade. Once you are registered, you will receive a confirmation of registration from the registrar and the Parade code to help you with your selection of Keystone Parade lodging. Whether you choose a hotel or a condominium, you will need this Parade access code to obtain the Parade rates. Check our regional Parade website for a lodging map of the Keystone area www.porscheparade2009.com

Walt and I will also be available to answer any Parade questions you may have. Our e-mail is [email protected] or call 303-499-6540.

21 SOME RECOLLECTIONS OF THE EARLY DAYS OF MID-OHIO REGION by Jack Chance

In the beginning there were so few Porsches that we not only flashed our headlights or waived to each other in greeting but often stopped to talk and compare notes. It was this need to share information (or commensurate) that provided the impetus for the Region - a formalizing of the unique bond we shared.

After a rally in the fall of 1965, my wife Marjie and I were spending the night at Emmy and Pete Dunkle’s. As Porsche owners we bemoaned the lack of a Porsche club, the short-lived Columbus Region having folded earlier. As the evening grew later , we decided that we really needed a region and would try to get one started. Pete agreed to recruit if I would handle all the paperwork. Our biggest concern was finding enough enthusiasts to apply for a charter - we needed 15! There were PCA Regions in Akron, Cleveland and Cincinnati but together they had a total of only 47 members.

Since Columbus had proven to be too small a base we decided to ask for all the Ohio counties not claimed by the existing Regions. This resulted in a broad band across the middle of the state and someone - I do not recall who - suggested the logical name “Mid-Ohio.”

Pete started his campaign by signing up three former members of the defunct Columbus Region: Floyd Acton, John Burnett and Bob Waterbury, while I began the contacts with PCA National. The small nucleus contacted owners they knew and Pete even flagged down Porsche drivers on the highway! A true story involved the prospect whose Porsche was in parts but he had enough and the serial number so he joined to help us out. Looking at today’s membership it is difficult to imagine that the 17 we finally did get were most of the remaining Porsche owners in Ohio at the time.

We held an organizational meeting at the University Club in downtown Columbus and the group agreed to petition PCA National for a charter. Elected as the first officers were:

President Jack Chance (also Newsletter Editor)

Activities Chairman: Jim Graham

Technical Chairman: George Foulds

Secretary: Emmy Dunkle

Treasurer: Parker Garwick Continued on page 23 22 March 2009 Continued from page 22 The Charter Members were:

Floyd Acton, Columbus

Dr. John E. Burnett, Jr., Springfield

John K. Chance, St. Clairsville

Dr. Raymond Concepcion, Marion

Peter Dunkle, Jr., Columbus

George Foulds, Columbus

Parker Garwick, Columbus

James Graham, Columbus

David Grandstaff, Columbus

Blaine Gutermuth, Marion

David Knoll, Columbus

William Lane, Columbus

Donald Vaughn, St. Clairsville

Roger L. Walton, Mansfield

Robert Waterbury, Columbus

W. C. Wheeler, Jr., Newark

Dr. John M. Young, Lockbourne AFB

Of these original members, five, Jack Chance, Jim Graham, Dave Knoll, Pete Dunkle and Emmy Dunkle, became M-O-R presidents. Spouses were considered full members from the start and several, such as Betty Grandstaff, Marjorie Chance and the redoubtable Emmy Dunkle were elected to office. Unfortunately I do not have a list of all their names. Of the Charter Members, Jim Graham and I (Jack Chance) are still M-O-R members (2009).

Continued on page 24 23 Continued from page 23

Our Charter was presented to us at the PCA National Board Meeting on April 16, 1966 and we became the 60th PCA Region. From the very beginning we had a newsletter to tie together our far-flung membership. Nancy Foulds won the contest to select a name and it’s been “Die Offene Strasse” for 43 years under a number of dedicated editors.

Mid-Ohio Region was at first primarily a social club and we held regular dinner meetings at such watering holes as the University Club, Jai Lai, Kahiki, Marion Country Club etc., highlighted by Treasurer Parker Garwick’s often hilarious reports (we had no funds). Bob Waterbury, the last President of Columbus Region, donated the $50.00 left in their account and we felt rich.

We bought our Porsches from Sports Car Forum (Parker was the salesman) and serviced them at a number of small private shops. By late fall we had added 10 more members including Jim Perrin who went on to great things at M-O-R and PCA National. By the end of 1967 we had doubled our original size to 34 members and were having Tech Sessions, a tent at the Mid- Ohio races, “Winter Weekends” at Port Clinton and Hueston Woods, even a simple rally and had begun to autocross. We also went to the Parades, beginning with the XIth but those would warrant another article!

Two of our early members, Roger Walton and Steve Payne, tried their hand at the Daytona races. “Die Offene Strasse’ continued to grow and featured a number of technical articles by our members. We once even scooped the national press by showing the first pictures of a great- looking Bertone 911, which was sold briefly (I wonder if any are left).

By 1968 we were an active, effective PCA Region and had laid a solid foundation for the future. The enthusiasm of many of these early members continued and several returned for the 25th anniversary. One that was missed was the late Floyd Acton who, with his wife Thelma, joined PCA when it first was organized in the 50’s and continued as an active member until his death. His records, donated to the Region, permitted me to list the original members.

We are looking forward to the 45th Anniversary party! Jack Chance

26 March 2009 The Saga of Kermit and the Red Baron

My Porsche is Carmine Red. It’s a deep hue sometimes described as blood red or the color of rubies. But to me, next to all the Guards Red Carreras which appear to have a touch of plutonium making them glow in an unnatural radioactive blinding light, my car looks dull.

One day while working at the veterinary clinic, my technician and I were discussing our cars. Hers is a 1990s- era Honda Del Sol. A classic collectible in its own right. It’s Somba Green. Also a color apparently made with plutonium.

She explained she named her car “Kermit,” and wondered what I had named mine. This seemed an odd question since I had never felt the compulsion to name a car before. But I had to admit I was considering naming mine, “The Red Baron.”

I explained it was a Cabriolet without a tail, and it possessed the lines and color of a classic German roadster. So I thought the Red Baron made since.

My comment was met with a polite little smile and somewhat blank stare. It was obvious she had no idea what I meant. But her mental wheels were turning faster than a GT3 on a long straight as she tried desperately to make sense of something. After a moment she finally asked, “You mean like the pizza?”

I answered that with a pause. A long one. It was now my turn to look a little blank, if not completely incredu- lous. The wheels in my head were not spinning but seemed to have Brembo big brakes slammed on. This was one of those moments. One when you wonder if you’re smarter than everyone else in the room, or if you’re just older.

I had a similar moment with several of the 20-something techs at the clinic not long ago. One was bragging about knowing a local actor that had appeared in a hit movie years ago. I said I had her beat. One of my clients, who used to bring his little French poodles to the clinic, was Paul Tibbets, the pilot of the Enola Gay.

Silence. Blanks stares. I decided if I repeated it enough times, they would get it. “You know, the Enola Gay? He named the plane after his mother, oddly enough,” I found myself rambling in hopes that I didn’t have to tell them who he was and what the plane was. “Paul Tibbets… he was such a quiet and reserved man. He had poodles. You know, the Enola Gay.” I don’t know if I didn’t want to explain that it was the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima because it was an event that lives not only in history but in infamy, or if I was just in denial that this group of people had no idea what I was talking about.

So here I was, in a similar moment, finding myself saying, “You know, Baron Von Richtofen… the World War One flying ace who shot down more allied planes than any other pilot,” knowing without doubt she had no idea what I meant by “allies.” Sigh. I continued to say the name, again and again as if it would somehow make her know what she didn’t know, “Baron Von Richthofen. The Red Baron. You know, the Red Baron.”

“Right, the Pizza guy.”

Was I the smartest person in the room, or just the oldest?

Continued on page 28 27 Continued from page 27

My technician asked another 20-something employee, “Who’s the Red Baron?”

She said on cue, “Um, the Pizza?”

I refused to let this continue. I marched to the reception area and found the 34-year-old receptionist who would finally vindicate me. “Tami, who’s the Red Baron?” I asked with all the confidence of Danica Patrick at a go-kart track.

I waited with a knowing smile, hoping her answer wouldn’t include any references to Snoopy and his Sopwith Camel.

“You mean the Pizza?”

Laughter. The kind of knowing laughter that says “only an old person would know what you know.”

I suppose the days of Dr. Ferdinand Porsche and the history surrounding him are forgotten by most now. Yet, his legacy lives on. If I ask a 9-year old, a 20-something, or a senior citizen what a Porsche 911 is, each knows the answer. Everyone, young or old, knows.

My Carmine Red 911 never officially became known as the Red Baron. I decided naming it just wasn’t my style. But lately I’ve had a strange compulsion to buy a . And name it DiGiorno.

Improved Aerodynamics, Suspension, Braking Distinguish 2010 GT3

ATLANTA — January 29, 2009 — Porsche will launch the fastest, most powerful 911 GT3 to-date at the Geneva Motor Show on March 3, 2009. The high performance GT3 is the latest in the new generation 911 series and carries over a wide range of expertise learned from motorsports – resulting in superb capabilities both on road and on track.

New Engine

The 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 raises the performance bar thanks to an increase in engine size to 3.8 liters and VarioCam technology now on both the intake and exhaust. The naturally aspirated six-cylinder boxer engine develops 435 bhp, 20 bhp more than its predecessor.

Continued on page 29 28 March 2009 Continued from page 28 The new, larger engine offers a significant increase in torque at medium engine speeds, which is particularly important for everyday driving. Track performance is also improved; the new GT3 accelerates to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds and reaches a top track speed of 194 mph.

Improved Suspension

Driving dynamics have also been enhanced, and the new GT3 offers even better grip and stability. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) has enabled Porsche’s engineers to make the springs and anti-roll bars stiffer, thus ensuring even more precise handling in sport mode, while retaining a level of comfort suitable for everyday use in normal mode. For the first time, the 911 GT3 comes standard with Porsche Stability Manage- ment (PSM), with suspension mapping mirroring that of the GT2. The driver can disengage both stability control and traction control in separate steps.

Refined Aerodynamics

At high speeds, aerodynamic improvements have increased downforce at both the front and rear, more than doubling the effect of the previous GT3. At the same time, the new aerodynamics package, with larger vents in the front and rear bumpers gives the GT3 a brand-new look, accentuated by standard bi-xenon headlights, LED rear light clusters and modified air intakes and outlets.

Innovative Engine Mounts

The new GT3 will be available with new and highly innovative dynamic engine mounts. Utilizing magnetic fluid, these inventive mounts automatically stiffen to create a more solid coupling between the engine and chassis when the car is driven energetically. This provides a sporting, rigid assembly on fast bends and winding racetracks yet allows for engine isolation and increased comfort while driving in everyday traffic. Traction is also improved when accelerating from a standstill.

Upgraded Brakes

With driving dynamics and performance at an even higher level, the brake system, following a long Porsche tradition, has also been enhanced accordingly. Brake discs are larger and feature an aluminum hub to reduce weight. Increased brake ventilation ensures a high level of brake power over long periods, and the GT3 can also be equipped with PCCB ceramic brakes, developed specifically for this model.

Creative Front End Lift

A new lift system for the front axle is also available. By utilizing an on-board air compressor, the front of the car can be raised for steep driveways or inclines. The touch of a button raises the front ride height by 30 mm, or 1.18 inches and at speeds up to approximately 30 mph. New, lighter GT3 specific center lock wheels and ultra- high performance tires round out the functional and visual enhancement of the GT3.

The 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 will be available in the fall of 2009, MSRP $112,200 US.
