Quidditas 39 94 The Evolution of Personal Pledging for the Freemen of Norwich, 1365-1441 Ruth H. Frost University of British Columbia Okanagan This paper examines the evolution of the personal pledging system used by newly admitted freemen, or citizens, of Norwich between 1365 and 1441. It argues that in the late fourteenth century new freemen chose their own sureties, and a large, diverse body of men acted as their pledges. The personal pledging system changed early in the fifteenth century, however, and from 1420 to 1441 civic office holders, particularly the sheriffs, served as the vast majority of pledges. This alteration to the pledging system coincided with changes to the structure and composition of Norwich’s government, and it paralleled a decrease in opportunities for the majority of Norwich’s freemen to participate in civic government.1 On September 14, 1365, thirteen men came before Norwich’s assembly and swore their oaths as new freemen of the city.2 They promised to pay entrance fees ranging from 13s. -

We have also analysed the treaty reforms performed within the EU (Nice Treaty and European Convention), necessary for correcting the democratic deficit and for reaching the objective of United States of Europe. The prospects of enlarging the continent’s borders by fully integrating Romania and Bulgaria in the Schengen area ignited controversial debates that questioned the practicability of EU’s motto “Unity in diversity”. This paper analyses the unique political dynamics that accompanied Romania in the Schengen accession process. Since 2011 Romania has been caught in an indeterminate state between having fulfilled the technical requirements and becoming a fully-fledged Schengen member. The contradictory behaviour of the Council combined with the vague explanations given by the EU officials regarding the decision to delay Romania’s accession signal an urgent need to overcome the internal mistrust in the EU’s institutions. Therefore, the aim of this thesis was to analyse the legal grounds of the reasons invoked for denying Romania’s accession to the Schengen zone. I concluded the paper with essential recommendations for both the Romanian and the European administration that could be used to find a solution to this political deadlock. CONTEXTS FOR PASTORAL CARE: ANGLO-SAXON PRIESTS AND PRIESTLY BOOKS, C. 900–1100 Gerald P. Dyson PhD University of York History March 2016 3 Abstract This thesis is an examination and analysis of the books needed by and available to Anglo-Saxon priests for the provision of pastoral care in the tenth and eleventh centuries. Anglo-Saxon priests are a group that has not previously been studied as such due to the scattered and difficult nature of the evidence. By synthesizing previous scholarly work on the secular clergy, pastoral care, and priests’ books, this thesis aims to demonstrate how priestly manuscripts can be used to inform our understanding of the practice of pastoral care in Anglo-Saxon England. In the first section of this thesis (Chapters 2–4), I will discuss the context of priestly ministry in England in the tenth and eleventh centuries before arguing that the availability of a certain set of pastoral texts prescribed for priests by early medieval bishops was vital to the provision of pastoral care. Additionally, I assert that Anglo- Saxon priests in general had access to the necessary books through means such as episcopal provision and aristocratic patronage and were sufficiently literate to use these texts. The second section (Chapters 5–7) is divided according to different types of priestly texts and through both documentary evidence and case studies of specific manuscripts, I contend that the analysis of individual priests’ books clarifies our view of pastoral provision and that these books are under-utilized resources in scholars’ attempts to better understand contemporary pastoral care. -

He had written some handbooks, such as the Parish Survival Guide, but his reputation did not extend far beyond the boundaries of St Bartholomew the Great, the pretty 12th-century church in the City of London. Indeed, the building was more famous than him, starring in blockbusters including Four Weddings and a Funeral and Shakespeare in Love. But a lot can change in a week and when, on May 31, he presided at a service for two gay clergy the rector could never have predicted that, a fortnight later, he would be swept into the eye of a storm. Since news broke of the ceremony - which had a wedding march, rings, vows, two best men, a fanfare and confetti - Dudley has been publicly admonished by his own bishop, the Right Rev Richard Chartres, and the two archbishops, Rowan Williams and John Sentamu, for a possible breach of guidelines on blessing civil partnerships. Dudley's actions could not have happened at a worse time, fuelling an already bitter and protracted power struggle that threatens the unity of the Anglican Communion, with conservative dioceses from Africa and America opposing the more accommodating nature of the Church of England towards the ordination and consecration of gay clergy.
