www.dothan.com 5 CoverStory Neuroendovascular Surgeon Talks With Members

In mid-December, the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce held a “Member Brief” at the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine with Dr. John Michael Whapham, the regions only fellowship trained neuroendovascular surgeon. Over 100 individuals attended the breakfast event to learn about neuroendovascular and the importance of having this service available in our area. The DACC also welcomed students from the Houston County Career Academy, who are enrolled in the bio-medical science program, to join members at the event. Neuroendovascular surgery is an innovative, minimally-invasive surgical treatment for complex brain and spinal cord vascular diseases that is performed from inside the blood vessels. The Southeast Alabama Medical Center offers the region’s only neuroendovascular surgical services. A Detroit and Chicago native, Dr. Whapham received his undergraduate degree in biology and pre-med at the University of Notre Dame, which led him to a master’s degree in cellular and clinical neurobiology before attending medical school at Wayne State University. He was subsequently trained in general neurology with residency in general neurology, vascular neurology and neuro critical care and then went on to complete fellowships in neuro-endovascular surgery and angiography. Dr. Whapham comes to us from the Midwest in hopes to set up a larger Dr. John Michael Whapham endovascular program in this region allied with some of the new elements in the program, including Wiregrass LifeFlight and expanding the outreach in the area already established with the doctors at NeuroSpine. At the briefing, Dr. Whapham discussed the latest advancements in neuroendovascular surgery and aneurysm procedures available at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center. He also highlighted some information on “What is neuroendovascular surgery,” Acute thrombectomy, acute stroke and subarachnoid hemorrhage treatment, as well as discussing delays in care with these patients. The new advances in imaging only available at SAMC, as well as changes to infrastructure at the hospital to better serve the community, were also discussed. In closing, Dr. Whapham talked about the advances in medicine and the presence of tele-medical services. A great discussion took place between Dr. Whapham and Chamber members during the question and answer session. A tour of the ACOM Research Lab concluded the event. If you would like more information about the neuroendovascular program at SAMC, visit www.samc.org/neuroendovascular-surgery or contact Dr. Whapham’s office at (334) 793-8804.
