WOODWARD JFW in 1988, a year before he figured out how inertia figures into advanced exotic propulsion and two years before he quit smoking. Photo, D. Woolum. Early in the winter of 2015 I was approached by my colleague at CSU Fullerton, Heidi Fearn, with an unusual request. But first, some background. Back in 2011, the Department (Physics) had decided to create a NSF- supported Gravitational Wave Physics and Astronomy Center, and the real estate they wanted for this operation was the space that I had squatted on for years with my lab (doing off beat gravity experiments of very low public visibility). I happily assented to being moved, for GWPAC was exactly the sort of thing I hoped would one day occupy the space I was holding for the Department. Of the various new locations on offer, one was a large interior lab prep room that adjoined Heidi's office, the best option from my point of view. Heidi was not happy about the new occupant of what she regarded as her space (notwithstanding that it was obviously

The Tesla and SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk, for instance, suggests “having some sort of merger of biological intelligence and machine intelligence”. His company, Neuralink, aims to make implanting chips in the brain as commonplace as laser eye surgery. Underlying all this talk is a radical vision of the mind’s future. Ray Kurzweil, the futurist and director of engineering at Google, envisions a technotopia where human minds upload to the Cloud, becoming hyperconscious, immortal superintelligences. Mr Musk believes people should merge with AI to avoid losing control of superintelligent machines, and prevent technological unemployment. But are such ideas really possible? The philosophical obstacles are as pressing as the technological ones. Here is a new challenge, derived from a story by the Australian science fiction writer Greg Egan. Imagine that an AI device called “a jewel” is inserted into your brain at birth. The jewel monitors your brain’s activity in order to learn how to mimic your thoughts and behaviours. By the time you are an adult, it perfectly simulates your biological brain. At some point, like other members of society, you grow confident that your brain is just redundant meatware.

    Philosophers’ Science Fiction / Speculative Fiction Recommendations, Organized by Author / Director November 3, 2014 Eric Schwitzgebel In September and October, 2014, I gathered recommendations of “philosophically interesting” science fiction – or “speculative fiction” (SF), more broadly construed – from thirty-four professional philosophers and from two prominent SF authors with graduate training in philosophy. Each contributor recommended ten works of speculative fiction and wrote a brief “pitch” gesturing toward the interest of the work. Below is the list of recommendations, arranged to highlight the authors and film directors or TV shows who were most often recommended by the list contributors. I have divided the list into (A.) novels, short stories, and other printed media, vs (B.) movies, TV shows, and other non- printed media.     2018, Vol. 15 (1), 51–67(138) Anamarija Šporčič revije.ff.uni-lj.si/elope University of Ljubljana, Slovenia doi: 10.4312/elope.15.1.51-67 UDC: 82.09-311.9:305 The (Ir)Relevance of Science Fiction to Non-Binary and Genderqueer Readers ABSTRACT As an example of Jean Baudrillard’s third order of simulacra, contemporary science fiction represents a convenient literary platform for the exploration of our current and future understanding of gender, gender variants and gender fluidity. The genre should, in theory, have the advantage of being able to avoid the limitations posed by cultural conventions and transcend them in new and original ways. In practice, however, literary works of science fiction that are not subject to the dictations of the binary understanding of gender are few and far between, as authors overwhelmingly use the binary gender division as a binding element between the fictional world and that of the reader. The reversal of gender roles, merging of gender traits, androgynous characters and genderless societies nevertheless began to appear in the 1960s and 1970s. This paper briefly examines the history of attempts at transcending the gender binary in science fiction, and explores the possibility of such writing empowering non-binary/genderqueer individuals. The DS4G concept is able to operate at very high specific impulse, power and thrust density values well in excess of conventional 3-grid ion thrusters at the expense of a higher power-to-thrust ratio. A small low-power experimental laboratory model was designed and built under a preliminary research, development and test programme, and its performance was measured during an extensive test campaign, which proved the practical feasibility of the overall concept and demonstrated the performance predicted by analytical and simulation models. In the present paper, the basic concept of the DS4G ion thruster is presented, along with the design, operating parameters and measured performance obtained from the first and second phases of the experimental campaign.

Bayles Gravitational Research August 10, 2001 Abstract: This paper presents a union of my own theory of electrogravitation and documented facts concerning the general structure and measured details of crop circles as reported by Pat Delgado and Colin Andrews in their book "Circular Evidence", Phanes Press, 1989. The details of true crop circles are much too complex to be faked and the above mentioned book "Circular Evidence" leaves little doubt of this for even the most casual reader. The details of how the swirls in the crops are laid down and not broken, the braiding of runs of stems out towards the circles edges, the latent pondermotive (motor) effects of a string suspending a steel nut and a compass rotating like a small motor are but a few salient facts that establish that a true crop circle cannot be faked by jokesters with ropes, ladders, boards and the like. I recommend the book for anyone who desires the truth concerning the crop circle phenomena. I have combined present quantum physics concepts in simple terms with my previously published work concerning electrogravitational action to provide the most likely field structure connected with the crop circle phenomena. I desire actual numbers as results when doing an analysis and therefore there is some math involved that the reader may skip over lightly if so desired but the math is important for an accurate descriptive mental picture of what the fields may actually look like and how they may be generated.
