One major new material is concrete; its quantity and importance for the new heritage requires a tailored conservation approach. Until now, there is a dependence on a repair approach. The dangers of such an approach for the cultural-historical values of the original concrete will be shown by the means of a case study, Fort Bezuiden Spaarndam (1901), part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Defence Line of Amsterdam. An underlying problem is that concrete is too young for conservation experts, causing a dependence on concrete repair expertises. The used repair techniques are developed for structural aims, not integrating conservation aims. Het moge mij gegeven zijn, in de volgende bladzijden in het kort deze geschiedenis uiteen te zetten en tevens op de ons nog resterende overblijfselen uit vroeger dagen te kunnen wijzen. In Spaarndam wonen in totaal 2.985 bewoners, verspreid over 1.235 huishoudens. De groep 45-65 jaar is het omvangrijkst. Deze groep is ook relatief groot, wanneer we deze vergelijken met de overige onderzochte kernen in het project. Het aandeel ouderen is ook relatief groot, maar wijkt niet noemenswaardig af van het landelijk gemiddelde. Zoals in veel kleine kernen is ook in Spaarndam het aandeel jongeren van 15 tot 25 jaar laag. Er wonen relatief veel mensen met een hoog inkomen. De woningwaarde ligt € 20.000 hoger dan in de andere kernen. Tegelijkertijd zijn er ook net iets meer mensen die leven van een bijstandsuitkering. Het aantal huishoudens dat onder of rond het sociaal minimum leeft is vergelijkbaar met andere kernen. Ligging en ruimtelijke structuur Het is duidelijk zichtbaar dat Spaarndam gebouwd is op een dam. Het is gegroeid rondom de twee sluizen. Het ligt tussen het IJ (inmiddels een rivier naar het Noordzeekanaal) en het Spaarne in. Ondanks de nabijheid van Haarlem en Velserbroek, geeft Spaarndam de indruk afgelegen te liggen, omgeven door weilanden. Dit wordt versterkt doordat er maar beperkte ontsluitingswegen zijn. Onderweg naar Spaarndam krijgt de bezoeker de indruk dat hij ver van de stad af is, zeker als men vanaf het oosten komt.
