The Origins of the European Integration: Staunch Italians, Cautious British Actors and the Intelligence Dimension (1942-1946) Di Claudia Nasini
Eurostudium3w gennaio-marzo 2014 The Origins of the European Integration: Staunch Italians, Cautious British Actors and the Intelligence Dimension (1942-1946) di Claudia Nasini The idea of unity in Europe is a concept stretching back to the Middle Ages to the exponents of the Respublica Christiana. Meanwhile the Enlightenment philosophers and political thinkers recurrently advocated it as a way of embracing all the countries of the Continent in some kind of pacific order1. Yet, until the second half of the twentieth century the nationalist ethos of Europeans prevented any limitation of national sovereignty. The First World War, the millions of casualties and economic ruin in Europe made the surrendering of sovereignty a conceivable way of overcoming the causes of recurring conflicts by bringing justice and prosperity to the Old World. During the inter-war years, it became evident that the European countries were too small to solve by their own efforts the problem of a modern economy2. As a result of the misery caused by world economic crisis and the European countries’ retreating in economic isolationism, various forms of Fascism emerged in almost half of the countries of Europe3. The League of Nations failed to prevent international unrest because it had neither the political power nor the material strength to enable itself to carry 1 Cfr. Andrea Bosco, Federal Idea, vol. The Gospel According to the Italian Twentieth Century
RELIGION RECONSIDERED: THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO THE ITALIAN TWENTIETH CENTURY Metello Mugnai A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Romance Languages (Italian). Chapel Hill 2013 Approved by: Federico Luisetti Dino Cervigni Ennio Rao Lucia Binotti Amy Chambless © 2013 Metello Mugnai ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT METELLO MUGNAI: Religion Reconsidered: The Gospel according to the Italian Twentieth Century (Under the direction of Federico Luisetti) This dissertation centers around the representation of Jesus in twentieth- century Italian literature and cinema. In Italy, these rewritings have often been produced during moments of socio-political transition, many times by artists who are not religiously observant. My dissertation examines the ways in which five Italian artists (Papini, Pasolini, De André, Rossellini and Berto) engaged with the rewriting of the gospel, each in their own intellectual context and with specific political goals. In my dissertation, through a close reading of these new representations of Jesus, I seek to bring to the forefront the complex reasons why those Italian authors decided to rewrite the canonical gospels into their own gospel. These rewritings transform and mold the canonical gospels into new ones through the use of different media, such as novels, films, or music, but also through the use of different scenarios, characters, and episodes. This thesis investigates this process of rewriting, to find out the needs of these artists to re-write the gospels and thus create their own gospel. Consequently, my doctoral dissertation seeks to analyze Jesus as a narrative character, by investigating those artistic works that focus on the Jesus of the gospels. -

It has been deemed “ferocious,” “a death-defying linguistic tightrope act,” and a combination of “dark and spiky emotions” in reviews appearing in popular newspapers. Taking the considerable critical investment in the affective dimension of Ferrante’s work as a point of departure, my dissertation examines the representation of emotions in My Brilliant Friend and in two Italian novels written between the 1960s and the 1970s – La Storia (1974, History: A Novel) by Elsa Morante (1912-1985) and L’arte della gioia (The Art of Joy, 1998/2008) by Goliarda Sapienza (1924-1996). -

CAS LI 306 VENETIAN LANDSCAPES: A CONTEMPORARY GRAND TOUR Co-taught by Prof. Elisabetta Convento and Prof. Laura Lenci Office Hours: Two hours per week (TBD) or by appointment Office: BU Padua, Via Dimesse 5 – 35122 Padova (Italy) E-mail: Phone: Office (+39) 049 650303 Class Meets: 2 hours, four times a week (Summer), Bu Padua Academic Center Credits: 4 Hub Units: 1+1 (GCI and OSC) Course description There are places that inspire visitors and artists. The morphological aspects of the territory; the colors; the human trace on the physical territory; the history, culture and traditions are but some of the elements of a landscape fascination. The Veneto region, where Padua always played and still plays a lively cultural role, is particularly rich of suggestions and throughout the centuries inspired artists, musicians, writers. Johann W. Goethe, Lord Byron or Henry James wrote beautiful memories of their Italian journey and left us extraordinary depictions of cities like Padua, Venice and Verona surrounded by hills, mountains, lagoon, but also rural landscapes. Following the path of these famous travelers, the course aims to offer students the opportunity to discover the Veneto region through literary and cultural experiences. By means of on-site lessons, readings and field trips, students are able to recognize the local identity that deepens its roots into the landscape (natural and anthropic), culture (progress and tradition), language (Italian and dialect), history and society. During the course, students will read and discuss extracts from works by Luigi Meneghello, Mario Rigoni Stern, Dino Buzzati or Giovanni Comisso to only mention some, and visit places such as the Dolomites, the Veneto countryside, or cities like Padova, Treviso, Vicenza or Venezia. -

Antonio Rosmini on Property It Showed Itself As a Part of God’S Calling
Journal of Markets & Morality Volume 7, Number 1 (Spring 2004): 63–97 Copyright © 2004 A Sphere Around Alberto Mingardi Policy Director the Person: Istituto Bruno Leoni (Turin, Italy) Antonio Rosmini and Visiting Fellow Centre for the New Europe on Property* (Brussels, Belgium) Father Antonio Rosmini-Serbati (1797–1855) is an author of growing interest and curiosity to his fellow churchmen, as well as to secular intellectuals, as a philosopher who successfully reconciled reason and faith. Nevertheless, the political nuances of his thought have barely been explored by English-speaking scholars, and even among his Italian followers these have not been fully appre- ciated. This article attempts to present an overview of Rosmini’s political philoso- phy, focusing on his concern for the protection of private property rights and arguing that it is precisely his advocacy of private property that determines his attitude toward the general organization of associated life, government, and democracy. The organization of this investigation consists of four parts. The first pro- vides a brief biographical sketch of Antonio Rosmini. The second tentatively enlists the main influences in the development of Rosmini’s thought as far as politics and economics are concerned. The third is devoted to examining his approach toward property. The fourth examines his definition of social justice in the light of his justification of property. Introduction In this article, I introduce the reader to the figure of Antonio Rosmini, provide a biographical sketch, and subsequently approach his thought on private prop- erty. As a priest and a devout Catholic, religious faith was central to every aspect of Rosmini’s philosophy.
