Remembering Arthur Perryman and Al Keglovits

The Perryman Keglovits Foundation 2018 All-Star Games

In 2003, an All Star Basketball Game was born in memory of both Al Keglovits and Arthur Perryman. It’s hard to believe that it is already the games’ sixteenth year! With the help of so many people over the past sixteen years this local boys and girls senior showcase has grown into a memorable community affair. This night is not just a basketball game for our senior All-Stars but also a night to remember all those in the community who have lost their battle with cancer and to encourage those who continue their fight. Cancer is the number one leading cause of death in Monroe County. The vision of this All-Star game was not only to give our senior All-Stars one last chance to play in front of their families and friends, but also to honor two Monroe County Basketball Legends who lost their lives to cancer. Proceeds from the event support both the “Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center” and the Jimmy V Foundation. The community can truly be proud of the support they provide to these worthy causes. One of the event’s guest speakers once said, “I urge all who are battling cancer, be it a personal battle or one for someone you love to take time to educate yourselves on the warning signs of cancer. Don’t ignore the opportunity for a long and healthy life”. A special thanks to all who have made this game night possible. We could not have done it without the support of community, friends, school districts, and sponsors. Sincerely, Board of Directors

3 Our Story “Don’t Give Up . . . Don’t Ever Give Up!”®

Serving as the heartbeat of The V Foundation for Cancer Research, formed by ESPN and Jim in 1993, his words throughout the ESPY speech have never been more meaningful. After being diagnosed with cancer at the young age of 46, Jim dreamed of finding cures for cancer. Passionate and committed, he wanted to see his fight through to victory. As a former coach, he began to recruit his team of family and friends to lead the Foundation in his quest to eradicate the disease. As a cancer patient, Jim recognized the need to invest in young physician/scientists to help establish their careers — after all, someone had invested in him early in his career! Addressing the need to help early-career cancer investigators develop into promising future research talents was the first goal of the Foundation. The V Scholar concept was developed in 1994 to address that need. Today, this highly respected award is eagerly sought by young physician/scientists at the nation’s leading cancer centers. As with any patient, Jim discovered first-hand how slowly science progresses from the lab to the patient’s bedside. He wanted faster solutions, more progress and better answers. Eight years after his death, The V Foundation announced its Translational Research Grants, designed to accelerate laboratory findings with the goal of benefiting patients more quickly. Although Jim lost his battle with cancer less than two months after delivering the ESPY speech, his dream of a cure lives on through research grants bestowed in his name. The V Foundation has awarded more than $170 million to more than 120 facilities nationwide and proudly awards 100% of direct donations and net event proceeds to cancer research. A relatively young organization, The V Foundation has a strong presence in the scientific community. The Foundation is guided by an elite, all-volunteer Scientific Advisory Board who recommends the research projects funded. This Board is comprised of top physicians and research scientists from prominent universities and cancer centers throughout the country. Working with this team of talented professionals, we are proud to carry out Jim’s vision for the future. Jim’s dream of finding a cure for cancer is one shared by millions. Although we have not yet achieved this goal, every day we get a little bit closer and will continue to honor his inspiring words, “Don’t Give Up . . . Don’t Ever Give Up!” ®

6 Remembering Al and Art

Al Keglovits – Al Keglovits was a father, a husband, a teacher, a coach, a bartender, a comedian, a New York Yankees fan, a golfer, and a friend to all who knew him. Fighting Cancer, seeing how he fought it was an inspiration to all of us. Al Keglovits was one of those guys who had a dynamic personality. Kids, colleagues and all opponents were drawn towards his magnetic charm… Al drew you closer to him. He knew he had a fight on his hands when he was diagnosed with cancer. He fought it right up to the end. He never, never quit. Unfortunately he couldn’t rally one more time. What is important is what the Man, Al Keglovits, did with his life. The example set was one of courage. He loved his Family, he loved his Friends and he loved Basketball. Coaching and teaching were instinctive for Keglovits. He will be remembered by all his players, friends, those he toasted life to. Coach Keglovits will always be remembered for his tremendous ever-so-dry sense of humor. He was one of those guys you always wanted to be around. Al made you feel comfortable but watch out for the next zinger, it was probably going to be aimed at you. Among all of his positive traits, Al Keglovits will be most remembered for his battling the cancer that took him away from his family, his friends, his basketball team and us all.

Arthur Perryman – Artie was a son and brother who was loyal and passionate toward his family and friends. Basketball was the passion shared by all in his family but it was Artie who enjoyed it most. His love for the game was obvious to all; however, it was the glue to the friendships he made among his teammates. He was a great teammate, willing to sacrifice his own individual accolades for the betterment of the team. He accrued four basketball letters over his career also earning the Most Valuable Player awards during 1992, 1993 and 1994. In 1994, Artie led his team to a District 11 AAAA title along with two wins in the PIAA state playoffs, scoring 30 points vs. Reading, 33 vs. Coatesville and 22 vs. eventual State Champion Chester. Sportswriters and coaches statewide rewarded him, with his being named to the Third Team “Big School” All-State Team in 1994. Sadly, Artie succumbed to cancer at the tender age of 19. He will be remembered most for his competitive nature, his infectious sense of humor and his ability to make people smile.

7 The Perryman Keglovits Foundation board of directors would like to say a special thank you, to all that made this All- Star game possible. We couldn't have done it with out your help. Thanks a million to:

8 Former Perryman Keglovits All- Star Player Now Coaching

As a player I thought I understood the game of basketball, until I found myself in a coaching position two years after my graduation. I played for the Pleasant Valley Lady Bears Varsity Basketball team from 2013 to my senior year in 2016. Then I found myself assistant coaching the same team at the varsity level in 2018. As a senior captain (2016), I pushed myself and my teammates to be the best they can be and always give their best effort on the court. Our hard work has lead us to many accomplishments and our attitudes won us games that maybe we should not have. I always said, any sport is 80% mental and 20% physical. As a player, being on the court with my teammates was always effortlessly a flow of the game. We knew each play like the back of our hands, and we also knew each other better than we knew ourselves which created no look passes and easy backdoor cuts to our teammates. When offered the coaching position for the year, I was thrilled to be back in the program and share my insights with the upcoming lady bear players. Although, I was not ready to be on the other end since my playing time was up. Being a player was easy but coaching was hard. The first thing I had to adjust to was strategies. What to do against certain defenses, the positions to put players into, and the cuts that should be made at the right times for easy openings. Like I said, as a player that was easy because I played in the flow, but as a coach you have to learn how to make the flow of the game and have your team always be in the right positions. Throughout the season, I slowly got the hang of it and it started to become natural. To see the improvements that our girls made by listening to the coaching staff and putting in the practice and hard work was rewarding to watch. I learned that you can easily tell your players what to do or what needs to be improved, but saying it in a manner that they understood, were motivated, and were willing to work on it to become a better basketball player was the hard part. Then, seeing some of our players learn and grow throughout the season was the reason that I found coaching worth while, and is probably the reason why most of the coaches stick around and dedicate so much for their lives to this sport. Like I said, being a player was easy and coaching was hard, but to see the impacts made and players succeed made the experience most enjoyable.

Sincerely, Mackenzie Borger

11 We Sincerely, “Thank You” from the Bottom of our Hearts

In 2003, Rich and Sharon Laverdure, along with Robert Madsen, approached me and my family in regards to starting an all-star game in Arthur’s name for local seniors to showcase their talents in one last event prior to the end of a great high school basketball career. Involuntarily we were touched to have Arthur’s name on such an event that would represent integrity, hard work and perseverance. What we did not realize is the affect it would continue to have on our family five years later.

Arthur left us way too early on April 21, 1995. When we say “us” we include all of the lives in which Art touched during his 19 years of life. During my family’s mourning, we were utterly supported by the community in every way possible. Truly there was not a day that passed in which someone did not reach out to offer an ear to listen, to share a personal story they had with Art or to just simply say how sorry they were for our loss. Over the years, our appreciation for our community has strengthened and words cannot express enough our gratitude for the continuous support in keeping Arthur’s memory, along with Al’s, and legacy alive through this prestigious event.

This All-Star game is a way for us to continue to share a commonality among our community remembering and honoring the life of Arthur Perryman III. What Art has contributed with his great talent on the basketball court along with his savvy personality will never be forgotten to those who have known him personally or simply just enjoyed watching his Jordanesque glide to the basket or shot well beyond the three point line. Who could ever forget that infamous headband in which he wore? Partly, I believe he wore it so that we, as fans, could tell him and Mike Long apart. And naturally he wore #31, the same number is favorite sister wore during her playing career, but Felicia and Chrissy may have something to say about that. But, whatever the reason, he left an impression on a diverse people in such a short span of life.

So, what does this game mean to the Perryman family? It means that our family along with the community has an annual opportunity to recollect on the life of Artie in an arena in which he loved most – the basketball court. My family and I are so appreciative for the many efforts that go into this game each year to improve its quality and for those who continue to support the cause. Artie is definitely looking down on us and proud of what we came together as a community to accomplish in his name. We sincerely thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Stacy Perryman

12 Game Brings Attention and Awareness The Perryman/Keglovits Game has always had significant meaning to me since my father is a cancer survivor. The game brings attention and awareness to different types of cancer and raises money to help so many battling the disease. Eight years ago, I had the privilege of playing in the Perryman/Keglovits All-star Game. Not only was the game meaningful and supportive of a great cause, it was a nice way to end the season with young ladies I had played with and against during my four years of high school.

Fast forward seven years later, I was offered to join the staff of the girls’ varsity basketball team at East Stroudsburg South High School. Being able to coach with my former coaches, is something special. I am able to continue to enjoy being around a sport that I grew to love and has taught me so much. Standing here today, coaching these young ladies while I am surrounded by my mentors that I had growing up, is something I feel lucky to be part of.

Sincerely, Brielle Kessel ESHSS Class of 2010 Assistant Coach Girls’ Varsity Basketball

In Loving Memory of Anita (Stefani) Kawka 1/11/1963-11/6/2002 Has anyone seen Anita Today? (This was read 16 years ago at her funeral) It’s the first time I heard her name some 4 years ago. Anytime we needed to know what was going to ship, and needed to know right away someone would say… Has anyone seen Anita Today?

When she had a good story to tell, you could hear the laughter offices away, when she had a bad story to tell, you could hear the laughter miles away…. Has anyone seen Anita Today?

Then came the news, she was sick, but what and how bad no one knew. She lost her hair and a few other things were gone. People were speculating, there were whispers in the hall psssst hey… Has anyone seen Anita Today?

Then she was fine, her hair was back and curly, all was right in the world. She came in with her boys and everyone got out candy for them and said go ahead grab a lot it’s ok…. Has anyone seen Anita Today?

Then it came back, she was sick again, this time with fury and no relent. She kept coming to work and trying so hard not to let on that cancer was getting its way…. Has anyone seen Anita Today?

We visited, we called, but no one knew exactly what to do. Then the news, she died on 11/6/2002 at 2:00 in the morning. I wonder if her boys will ever know what kind of amazing friend, and woman she was in her special way….. I wish I could see Anita Today?

Miss you…Stefani family and Friends

Haller was a talented point guard during her collegiate playing career at East Stroudsburg University. She scored 1,050 career points and dished out 365 career assists for the Warriors. Haller led East Stroudsburg to the PSAC Eastern Championship in 1985. Her 410 points rank 18th in single- season school history while her 147 assists during the 1984-85 season still ranks fourth in single- season history. Both of those numbers set a school record when she originally did it. She was named the team MVP twice and was the Female Athlete of the Year in 1985. Haller earned her bachelor’s in movement and sports studies and her masters in education/sport management from East Stroudsburg. Haller has been inducted into the Lebanon Catholic Hall of Fame, the East Stroudsburg University Hall of Fame and the Lebanon County Hall of Fame for both her time as a player and a coach.

48 Wishing for good luck to all the senior basketball all- stars!

-From the Lichty Family

49 50 The Gallagher girls solidified their places in East Stroudsburg South history long ago.

So it should come as no surprise that the trio of sisters continue to create special moments throughout their athletic careers. Kelsey Gallagher and Carly Gallagher will both be inducted into the East Stroudsburg Area School District Hall of Fame on Friday, joining eldest sister Cori Gallagher as enshrined members of the hall.

The family will end its week together, but it also started together too. Kelsey, who is a first-year head coach for Emmaus’ girls basketball team, traveled Monday to East Stroudsburg North, where Carly is the Timberwolves’ head coach and assisted by Cori.

“It’s pretty surreal,” said Kelsey Gallagher, a 2008 graduate of ES South. “It’s probably a dream come true for my dad. But it’s kind of weird at the same time being against both my sisters.

“But it’s exciting. I mean we both love and are very passionate about the sport, so I think it was a very fun atmosphere.”

The moments shared on Monday were even more special because it was Carly’s birthday. “To have my sister in the gym coaching her team as well ... I couldn’t have picked a better team to play our senior night against and a better team to enjoy my birthday with,” said Carly Gallagher, a 2010 South grad.

By the time she graduated, Carly, a two-time Pocono Record Player of the Year and two-time All-State player, netted 1,910 career points, a Cavalier record as well as second-most all time in Monroe County history along with a decorated soccer career. She then attended Millersville University and scored 1,081 points, 16th-most in Marauder women’s basketball history, prior to a career-ending Achilles injury.

Kelsey Gallagher scored 1,562 points of her own at Eastburg and was named the Mountain Valley Conference Most Valuable Player in her junior and senior years prior to her time at Bloomsburg University. In high school soccer, she was named the MVC MVP and was named to the First-Team All-State three times throughout her high school career.

Their father, Charlie Gallagher, was there to soak in the action in Bushkill on Monday and reflect on his daughters’ accomplishments.

“It’s something that we worked really hard (for),” Charlie said. “People used to tease me that I had the key to the gym because they were gym rats since they were (small). They played up against older competition all the time. “And for all three of them (to get inducted), it shows the appreciation of everybody who saw them play.”

Cori Gallagher, a 2005 graduate of East Stroudsburg South, was inducted into the

district’s hall of fame in 2013 for her accomplishments both on the soccer pitch and basketball court. She made the All-MVC First Team in basketball but followed her heart to soccer, which she played on a full scholarship at Temple University and was a four-year starter and three-year captain. She was also the first female to score points for the Cavalier varsity football team as the team’s starting placekicker for two years.

To watch her younger sisters battle against each other as an assistant coach the same week that they will follow her into the ESASD hall of fame has made this week a “whirlwind” for Cori, she said. “Friday night is going to be more special than I think people realize,” Cori Gallagher said. “Being back at home where we did it all, being honored in front of your peers, being honored in front of Adam Cole, South’s (girls basketball) coach who all three of us played for.”

The honor reminds Cori of when she was inducted in the same class as former ES South boys basketball coach Mark Brown, who used to rub Cori’s head for good luck before games. “The two of them are getting in with Ed Christian,” she said. “He’s been there forever. He coached my dad in football. He coached me in football when I was the placekicker for four years.

“Just those relationships that you’ve built through the years and to be in the same breath as those people is more special than people around here I think really know anymore.”

Cori has been able to watch her sisters “blossom,” particularly coming to a peak Monday when Kelsey and Carly took to opposite sidelines for the first time since playing against each other in college. “I’m just happy to be a part of it,” Cori said. “But ultimately, it’s special for me to watch my two younger sisters out there.”

“It’s super special that they can go in together. It was nice when I went in, but I’m even more proud of them for their accomplishments and getting in more so than even mine.”

As the three women continue to find success, their father Charlie can’t help but reflect on the tough times he had raising them.“I was a single parent trying to get them all around to different places,” Charlie said. “We were on the road all the time. I rented a car for five years every weekend. We traveled. Cori missed a lot of things. But we put a lot of time and effort in it.“But now it means more than anything because they’re being recognized. ... We’re local poor people that put a lot of time and effort in.”

Because the best cancer-fighting technologies give youhope. It’s the most advanced cancer treatment technology in Monroe County. And you’ll only find it at the Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center, part of Lehigh Valley Cancer Institute. Edge Radiosurgery fights cancer with fewer treatments. No incisions, anesthesia or overnight hospital stays – just fewer side effects and better outcomes. After all, as the region’s leader in cancer care, it’s our responsibility to invest in different technologies to help you fight cancer. Because raising the bar of cancer care means never limiting yourself to just one technology to treat everyone. Delivering world-class technology gives you the hope you need to keep fighting.
