This past winter and spring have brought record rainfall and the highest Lake Erie levels since the 1920s. As a result, even getting on the water has been an effort. Bob Sagan stepped down from the ISCA Marketing Vice President position in December of 2018. He has devoted 15+ years on the board and wants to sail with his daughter more before she grows up. Michigan Fleet 38 has hosted national championships in 2015, 2009, and 2001. Bob designed banners for events and signs which have been used at boat shows and regattas. He was instrumental getting the Interlake in the finals of the Sears Junior Championships in 2014. Bob has always been the “go to” guy at Traverse City. An Ambivalent Ground: Re-Placing Australian Literature
An Ambivalent Ground: Re-placing Australian Literature James Paull A Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of New South Wales 2007 PLEASE TYPE THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES Thesis/Dissertation Sheet Surname or Family name: PAULL First name: JAMES Other name/s: CAMPBELL Abbreviation for degree as given in the University calendar: PhD School: English, Media and Performing Arts Faculty: Arts Title: An Ambivalent Ground: Re-placing Australian Literature Abstract 350 words maximum: (PLEASE TYPE) Narratives of place have always been crucial to the construction of Australian identity. The obsession with identity in Australia betrays longstanding uncertainty. It is not difficult to interpret in this uncertainty a replaying of the deeper insecurities surrounding the settler community's legal and more broadly cultural claims to the land. Such insecurities are typically understood negatively. In contrast, this thesis accepts the uncertainty of identity as an activating principle, appropriate to any interpretation of the narratives and themes that inform what it means to be Australian. Fundamental to this uncertainty is a provisionality in the post-colonial experience of place that is papered over by misleadingly coherent spatial narratives that stem from the imperial inheritance of Australian mythology. Place is a model for the tension between the coherence of mythic narratives and the actual rhizomic formlessness of daily life. Place is the ‘ground’ of that life, but an ambivalent ground. An Ambivalent Ground approaches postcolonial Australia as a densely woven text. In this text, stories that describe the founding of a nation are enveloped by other stories, not so well known, that work to transform those more familiar narratives. -
Transcript Michel Gondry
TRANSCRIPT A PINEWOOD DIALOGUE WITH MICHEL GONDRY Michel Gondry is one of the most creative contemporary directors, known for his astonishingly inventive style that combines complex technological innovation with an almost childlike playfulness, and an ability to move fluidly between dream and reality. Gondry has directed feature films (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Be Kind Rewind, The Science of Sleep), documentaries (Dave Chappelle's Block Party), music videos for Bjork, Radiohead, The White Stripes, and Daft Punk, and numerous award-winning commercials. He is also an installation artist who has been featured at Deitch Projects. In this conversation with Chief Curator David Schwartz, Gondry discusses his remarkable career. I had done (May 9, 2008): some experimentation with animation at an earlier age, and then one day I bought a film camera—I DAVID SCHWARTZ: Please welcome the birthday mean, I was flatmates with my friend Jean-Louis boy, Michel Gondry. (Applause) So what do you Bompoint, who is my DP now. He had some think of when you watch these videos; do you think equipment and he was a director, so he helped me of how hard they were to make? a little bit. That’s how it started. I was doing two minute animated pieces to fit our music, because MICHEL GONDRY: No, actually. I was thinking that the songs were quite minimalist and short, so they they look alright. -

The Mantle of the Prophet Joseph Passes to Brother Brigham: One Hundred Twenty-nine Testimonies of a Collective Spiritual Witness Lynne Watkins Jorgensen n August 8, 1844, six weeks after the Prophet Joseph Smith’s Omartyrdom, a meeting of the Saints was held in Nauvoo, Illinois. Brigham Young, President of the Quorum of the Twelve, and several other apostles had just returned from missions. The purpose of this meeting was to determine by vote who had the right and responsibil- ity to lead the Church—Sidney Rigdon, first counselor in the First Presidency, or the Quorum of the Twelve with Brigham Young at their head.1 In the course of the two meetings held that day, many in attendance received a divine witness that Brigham Young was to be the next leader: some Saints specifically state that Brigham Young assured the congregation that “here is President Sidney Rigdon, who was counselor to Joseph. I ask, where are Joseph and Hyrum? They 1. Music Video Auteurs: the Directors Label Dvds
i Music Video Auteurs: The Directors Label DVDs and the Music Videos of Chris Cunningham, Michel Gondry and Spike Jonze. by Tristan Fidler Bachelor of Arts (With First Class Honours), UWA ’04. This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Western Australia. English, Communication and Cultural Studies. 2008 ii MUSIC VIDEO AUTEURS ABSTRACT Music video is an intriguing genre of television due to the fact that music drives the images and ideas found in numerous and varied examples of the form. Pre-recorded pieces of pop music are visually written upon in a palimpsest manner, resulting in an immediate and entertaining synchronisation of sound and vision. Ever since the popularity of MTV in the early 1980s, music video has been a persistent fixture in academic discussion, most notably in the work of writers like E. Ann Kaplan, Simon Frith and Andrew Goodwin. What has been of major interest to such cultural scholars is the fact that music video was designed as a promotional tool in their inception, supporting album sales and increasing the stardom of the featured recording artists. Authorship in music video studies has been traditionally kept to the representation of music stars, how they incorporate post-modern references and touch upon wider cultural themes (the Marilyn Monroe pastiche for the Madonna video, Material Girl (1985) for instance). What has not been greatly discussed is the contribution of music video directors, and the reason for that is the target audience for music videos are teenagers, who respond more to the presence of the singer or the band than the unknown figure of the director, a view that is also adhered to by music television channels like MTV.
