Danish Cold War Historiography
SURVEY ARTICLE Danish Cold War Historiography ✣ Rasmus Mariager This article reviews the scholarly debate that has developed since the 1970s on Denmark and the Cold War. Over the past three decades, Danish Cold War historiography has reached a volume and standard that merits international attention. Until the 1970s, almost no archive-based research had been con- ducted on Denmark and the Cold War. Beginning in the late 1970s, however, historians and political scientists began to assess Danish Cold War history. By the time an encyclopedia on Denmark and the Cold War was published in 2011, it included some 400 entries written by 70 researchers, the majority of them established scholars.1 The expanding body of literature has shown that Danish Cold War pol- icy possessed characteristics that were generally applicable, particularly with regard to alliance policy. As a small frontline state that shared naval borders with East Germany and Poland, Denmark found itself in a difficult situation in relation to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as well as the Soviet Union. With regard to NATO, Danish policymakers balanced policies of integration and screening. The Danish government had to assure the Soviet Union of Denmark’s and NATO’s peaceful intentions even as Denmark and NATO concurrently rearmed. The balancing act was not easily managed. A review of Danish Cold War historiography also has relevance for con- temporary developments within Danish politics and research. Over the past quarter century, Danish Cold War history has been remarkably politicized.2 The end of the Cold War has seen the successive publication of reports and white books on Danish Cold War history commissioned by the Dan- ish government. -

Hansen og Jens Ringsmose Institut for Statskundskab hhv. -
The Political Elites' Discourse of Right-Wing Populist Parties in Denmark and Sweden
The Political Elites’ Discourse of Right-Wing Populist Parties in Denmark and Sweden Written by Mia Lund Bekke Denise Helt Persson Development & International Relations Dissertation Supervisor: Wolfgang Zank Aalborg University, 2015 Page 1 of 99 Preface The dissertation finishes our master degree in Development and International Relations with the headline “The Political Elites’ Discourse of Right-Wing Populist Parties in Denmark and Sweden”. The dissertation has been carried out as a comparative study of Denmark and Sweden, focusing on the mainstream parties' acceptance of right-wing populist parties in each country. It is examined by a discourse analysis based on Laclau and Mouffe's discourse theory supplemented by Fairclough's concept ‘order of discourse’. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our supervisor Wolfgang Zank for his educational inputs and dedication. Taxonomy of Minority Governments LISA LA FORNARA INTRODUCTION A minority government in its most basic form is a government in which the party holding the most parliamentary seats still has fewer than half the seats in parliament and therefore cannot pass legislation or advance policy without support from unaffiliated parties.1 Because seats in minority parliaments are more evenly distributed amongst multiple parties, opposition parties have greater opportunity to block legislation. A minority government must therefore negotiate with external parties and adjust its policies to garner the majority of votes required to advance its initiatives.2 This paper serves as a taxonomy of minority governments in recent history and proceeds in three parts. -
The Dilemmas of Nordic Welfare Policies
© N.F. Christiansen/ARAB 2002 p. 1 (9) Nationalist Challenges – the Dilemmas of Nordic Welfare Policies By Niels Finn Christiansen University of Copenhagen Centre for the Study of Working Class Culture “The Social Democratic governments created a collective understanding telling that ‘there are no problems’ and that ‘we are best in the world.’ Thereby they prevented the Centre-Left in drawing up a big comprehensive project which could fill the common people with enthusiasm.” (The vice-president of the Danish Trade Union Federation, LO, Tine Aurvig-Huggenberger in a comment about the present state of the Danish Social Democratic Party. Politiken September 7 2002) Throughout the twentieth century nationalism in its many variants has constituted a major challenge to the progress and consolidation of the socialist labour movements. Scores of books and articles by politicians, political theorists as well as academics have been written about the intricate relationships between socialism and nationalism, but the theme is remarkably absent in the general studies of the history of socialism. The problematic covers a wide range of historical situations from the traumatic break down of the Second International in 1914 under the stress of the great war until the last decade where we have witnessed the emergence in Western Europe of new populist/nationalist movements and political parties which harvest most of their electoral support from the Socialist/Social Democratic labour movements. In this essay I intend to trace the historical roots of contemporary -

Chapter 6 Chapter 6 Trends and Conclusions This study has focused on significant shifts in Denmark's official support to Southern Africa during the era of colonialism and apartheid. These shifts reveal what players were around and what factors ultimately proved decisive for the development of Danish policy. A number of conclusions can be drawn from the study. First, it shows that the Danish approach can be divided into two main periods; the first concentrating on financial support to victims of apartheid (1960- 78) and the second on financial and political sanctions (1978-1992). Second, different actors developed and formed Danish policies in these periods, namely politicians, state officials, NGOs and other representatives of Danish civil society. And they played different roles in the two mentioned periods. Third, the official Danish support and its political impact was of a flexible nature. The technical/administrative substance of the support on the one hand, and the political profile on the other, were not always linked, and their development was to a large extent formed by domestic issues. Main periods 1960-78 official Danish policy towards southern Africa was to develop and provide financial support to the struggle against racism and imperialism in Southern Africa. This policy was inspired by public attention and the involvement of NGOs, trade unions, youth organisations, political parties in their capacity as grass roots structures and of committees established to express solidarity and lobby official policies. The impetus in the first half of the 1960s was the brutality of the South African regime, as shown in the Sharpeville massacre, the banning of ANC and PAC and the trials against the political leaders of these organisations. -

NOTAT Oversigt Over Tidligere Ministre
