Herman Johannes Forest Park has suffered a serious damage from illegal logging and other destructives activities. This condition is worsened by lack of law enforcement and awareness on the importance of forest for the community. This study aims to determine level of damage from illegal logging, and formulate strategies to sustainably manageon the Prof. Ir. Herman Johannes Forest Park. Public perception was obtained by administering questionnaires and interviews through a purposive sampling method. The level of damage from illegal logging was assessed through identificationand measurement of damaged locations.SWOT analysis was used to formulate the management strategiesbased on identification of internal and external factors. Findings revealed that 5% of Prof. Ir. Herman Johannes Forest Park were damaged caused by illegal logging. The management of the Forest Park was challenged by illegal logging, forest encroachment, timber extraction for household use, slashing and burning practices, poor spatial planning, ineffective institutional arrangement, wildlife poaching, illegal grazing,and inadequate facilitates and staffs capability. In addition, there was lack of community involvement in the forest management. Aspects that appeared to require the most attention to improve the Forest Park includes consolidation of status and functions of the Forest Park, enhancement of surveillance and enforcement, improvement of the management effectiveness by establishing special division to manage the Forest Park, improvement of staffs capacity and infrastructures, rehabilitation of the damaged area, improvement of awareness to the impact of deforestation, and involvement ofindigenous and local communities on the Forest Park management (i.e. community-based forest monitoring, application of local wisdom in the forest management, community empowerment and economic development).     Conclusion: Convergent Paths In November 1945, the President of the Republic of Vietnam, Hồ Chí Minh, sent a letter addressed to ‘the President of the Republic of Indonesia’, proposing that a joint declaration of solidarity to be made by Indonesia and Vietnam in the form of a ‘Preparatory Commission Struggling for a Federation of the Free Peoples of Southern Asia’. The letter, entrusted to an American journalist named Harold Isaacs, did not reach President Soekarno.1 It was handed to Vice-President Mohammad Hatta, who then passed it on to Prime Minister Sutan Sjahrir. Sjahrir discussed the offer with Soedjatmoko Koko, the interpreter to foreign correspon- dents of the Republican government, but told him that he would not reply and preferred just to ignore the letter. Sjahrir indifference sprang from his conviction that the situation in Indonesia and Vietnam were very different. The Indonesian nationalists were up against the Dutch, who were ‘a weak colonial power and could be defeated quickly.’ Hồ Chí Minh had to contend with the French, who could and would resist him for a long time.   • Authoritarian Modernization in Indonesia's Early
    chapter 6 The Managers of Social Engineering Abstract This chapter discusses the implementation of scientific management theories in the context of the Guided Democracy’s revolutionary effort to remake the Indonesian per- son. Studies into the administrative problems in the early 1950s has pointed out the cultural problem of administration. Classes on such themes as leadership strength- ened the idea of a cultural pathology rooted in feudal Indonesian culture. Instead, an idealized image of the village with its corporatist values of gotong royong became one of the mainstay in the discussion of Indonesian administration. This would translate in the creation of a series of institution meant to discipline the civil service and wid- er population. Indoctrination courses, surveillance and retooling were the means to which the behavioral problem of the Indonesian man could be rationalized so as to support development. The support for this behavioral indoctrination came from both scientific management and Indonesian ideas of traditional corporatism. The concept of discipline was bifurcated within the divide between the experts and the rest. Thus, Indonesian behavioral discipline was often a form of re- traditionalization allowing for the expert to take on the authority of tradition. This again highlights the ease with which scientific management was reincarnated to support an Indonesian corporative order that was illiberal and undemocratic. Keywords cultural pathology – traditional corporatism – managerial indoctrination – re- traditionalization This chapter discusses both the implementation of scientific management and the efforts of the government to instil discipline in its civil service with the stated aim of eradicating corruption. The policymakers at the national level assumed that the problem of corruption was the Indonesian Man himself be- cause he was, in their eyes, incapable, inefficient, and corrupt.

S.A. ) October 1995 GENDER, DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL CHANGE IN ROTE, EASTERN INDONESIA by Maria Agustina Noach-Patty ABSTRACT This thesis explores gender relations in the island of Rote in Indonesia. It examines Rotenese social organization and the role of women in development. In this case the researcher is of the same culture of the people being studied: the analysis is derived from social science informed by local knowledge. The thesis argues that gender relations among the Rotenese have a complementary nature. Rotenese society and culture have been subjected to many dualistically inclined interpretations. In this analysis of Rotenese social organization dualism is shown to be fundamental to all aspects of Rotenese life. Gender relations, therefore, are discussed in terms of a binary category. It is impossible to study women in isolation from men because in the Rotenese cultural context they function as a pair. This dualism, which at first sight gives a sense of opposition between male and female, and between 'outer house' (male) and 'inner house' (female) domains, is revealed on closer examination as a complementary relationship, in which the two halves, men and women, make a complete whole. The main themes considered in this thesis are as follows: (i) The political system of Rote from the colonial past to the present is discussed by reference to its dualistic orientation.

    Dedicated to HERMAN JOHANNES LAM Dedication The completion of the seventh volume of this Flora gives me the occasion to dedicate this volume to HERMAN JOHANNES LAM, who from the beginning was intimately connected with the taxonomical study of the flora of the Malesian region, adopted the working team, provided for it a permanentniche in his institute, and finally played an important role when the perpetuating of its existence was threatened in 1958. HERMAN LAM was born in Veendam, January 3rd, 1892. His father was an organic chemist and taught chemistry at Veendam. There was a possibility that he would be attached to the Uni- the versity at Groningen, but he accepted a new post in Rotterdam, in 1893, to set up first municipal food-inspection department in Holland; this stood model for such inspections annex laboratories in other places.     Ivory Tower on Dirt: The Impact of Regime Change on Academic Freedom in Indonesian Universities By Abdul Wahid June 2019 Working Paper SHAPE SEA Research Project Abstract Academic freedom is an essential aspect of university, by which it functions as a socio-cultural institution. For the sake of its political position, government regimes in any state of the world are interested in having control over university. Therefore, the change of regime often had certain effects on the working of universities, including their academic freedom practice. This paper seeks to investigate the impacts of regime change in Indonesia during the period of 1950-1980 on the way Indonesian universities examines the principle of academic freedom during the period of 1950-1980. Based on first hand sources of information and interview, the paper argues that Sukarno’s anti-colonial and revolutionary policies and then Suharto’s anti-communist and developmental projects have manipulated Indonesian universities and disrupted substantially their practice of academic freedom. The aftermath of this regime change contributes in shaping the nature of academic freedom practice in present day Indonesian universities. Key words: Academic freedom; regime changes; Indonesian university; Sukarno; Suharto Introduction This paper investigates the impact of regime change on Indonesian universities since 1950 until 1980. It focuses on how and in what way the changing political regimes did affect the way Indonesian universities perceive the principles of academic freedom and how did they formulate, develop and practice their own academic freedom. During the period of concern, Indonesia experienced at least two important regime changes, namely from the Dutch colonial government to the Indonesian independent government in 1945/1950, and from Sukarno’s presidency to Suharto’s presidency in 1965/1966.
